UK Parliament buildings are infested with 'super-mice'

The Mouse of Commons! Historic Parliament buildings are infested with 'super-mice' that can evade traps and are resistant to several poisons, official review finds

  • Tens of thousands was spent in 2020/21 trying to tackle the rodent problem
  • There are around 600 'bait boxes' in Westminster's kitchens and catering areas
  • Mice appear to be resistant to several poisons and are harder to kill than others

Parliament  is infested with super-mice which evade traps and are immune to bait, an official review has found.

Tens of thousands of pounds are spent each year trying to combat Westminster’s rodent problem, yet the four-legged pests persist.

Parliamentary authorities commissioned an internal review into the problem which revealed mice roaming the Commons and Lords are far harder to kill than regular rodents.

The Rodent Control Strategy Review, released under Freedom of Information laws, revealed there are around 600 ‘bait boxes’ in Westminster’s kitchens and catering areas.

But the mice appear to be resistant to several of the poisons - confirmed after House authorities asked the University of Reading to carry out DNA profiling on mouse tails.

The report stated: ‘Currently, we are using brodifacoum in the baits. Our use of anticoagulants [poisons] is severely restricted by the high levels of resistance in the mouse population at [the] Palace of Westminster.

‘Last year we undertook a DNA profiling exercise with Reading University on 4 house mouse tails. The results indicate a very high incidence of resistance, not only to first generation anticoagulants, but also to difenacoum and bromadiolone.

‘Both the known mutations (L128S and Y139C) were present in three of the four tails profiled and one (L128S) was present in the other mouse. We are therefore not able to use these anticoagulants on site.’

The report, compiled in 2020, goes on to say that parliamentary authorities suspect the mice are also resistant to difethialone, which would be the ‘first ever case of resistance to difethialone in house mice’.

According to experts, difethialone should be ‘very toxic to rats and mice’, with even a tiny dose usually enough to kill. It can even be harmful to humans.

There is also ‘behavioural resistance’ among Westminster’s mice population which is said to have existed for some 20 years, making it difficult to find bait that the mice will eat.

The report notes: ‘It is entirely possible that we have mice that will either not take baits or will not go into the bait boxes (this latter characteristic is becoming increasingly an issue in food premises throughout the country).’

In November, it emerged that Parliament’s food hygiene rating had slipped from five to two.

The Spectator reported that mouse droppings were found in many of Parliament’s catering areas - with 19 separate cases of droppings recorded.

Westminster City Council’s health inspection report also said there was a lack of ‘adequate monitoring’, and suggested that ‘thorough daily cleaning’ was not regularly taking place.

But the authorities say Parliament is a ‘safe place to work and eat’ and insist they are committed to a ‘humane and ethical’ pest control programme.

Staff in the Palace of Westminster have long had to contend with mice in their offices - forcing some workers to take matters into their own hands by sourcing traps.

And in 2014, Penny Mordaunt - now the Commons Leader - brought her own cat to Parliament to tackle the issue.

She shared photos of her cat in her Commons office on Twitter, captioned: ‘Great believer in credible deterrence, I’m applying the principle to the lower ministerial corridor mouse problem.’

Official figures show the Commons and Lords spent a total of £64,880 in 2020/21 on pest control, down from £149,339 the previous year.

A UK Parliament spokesman said: ‘Parliament is a safe place to work and eat, with robust food safety and hygiene processes in place.

‘We are committed to maintaining a humane and ethical pest control programme, focussed on preventative measures and, where necessary, use of various control methods.

‘We will, as ever, continue to follow all legislative and regulatory obligations.’

2023 Predictions: Peruvian Shamans Say Ukraine War To End By August

Peace on earth by August 2023? Peruvian shamans - who said Russia would never invade Ukraine - now predict the end of war as part of purification ceremony involving a snake crawling over photos of Putin and Zelensky

  • Peruvian shamans and healers predicted peace between Ukraine and Russia
  • In their annual ceremony they said peace would be brokered by August next year
  • But last year shamans incorrectly predicted Putin would not invade Ukraine
  • Cleofe Sedano said today: 'All this will calm down. Peace, tranquility will come.'

Peruvian shamans have 'seen' that peace between Ukraine and Russia will come by August this year - despite incorrectly predicting last year that Putin would not invade.

In a ceremony which involved a snake crawling over photos of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and Russia's Vladimir Putin, a group of shamans and healers in Peru's capital Lima today foretold that the conflict would end by August next year.

Atop San Cristobal hill, the shamans, donning traditional Andean attire, welcomed the coming year in a purification ceremony incorporating flowers, incense, a live snake, and photos important political figures, as they made predictions for 2023.

The ceremony is performed every December as predictions are made on what the new year will bring - but last year shamans said that while Russia wanted to invade Ukraine 'it will not happen'.

But still hoping for peace, shaman Cleofe Sedano said today: 'All this will calm down. Peace, tranquility will come. That's what we've seen.'

He has said that a peace treaty between Russia and Ukraine would be signed by August next year.

Last year, Peruvian shamans hoped that their rituals would ease border tensions between the two nations.

Shaman Félix Roldán said last December said that Russia 'want to invade territory in Ukraine' but added that 'but it will not happen,' according to Euronews.

'That's why us shamans are here so there is no war, no physical aggression,' he said.

Today's ceremony comes ten months after Russia's invasion of Ukraine that has left tens of thousands dead. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy has been vigorously promoting a 10-point peace plan.

Issuing their omens after hovering over a sheet of flowers and coca leaves, with skulls on the ground, the shamans also predicted natural disasters in north America.

'Next year there will be an earthquake, but not in the capital of Peru, in another place, mostly abroad in the northern part of America, which could be the United States... there will be a lot of tragedy, mostly climatic,' said sorcerer and president of the International Organization of Shamans and Healers of Peru, Walter Alarcon.

He also said: 'In Peru there is going to be a very big convulsion by 2023, which is a bit difficult to solve and there are many deaths.'

BBC News photo: Brisbane nativity camels returned safely after stroll

The trio of ungulates wandered across three suburbs before being caught.

Morris was somewhat surprised when he heard that his camels had escaped, but not terribly so. "They're always wandering," he told 9News. "All the motorists, I give them credit, they were really nice people, they slowed down," he added.

The fugitives were re-captured when they paused on their journey for a snack. They were found eating grass on the side of the road, at which point they were returned to the nativity scene.

"Our camels got a bit lost on the way to Bethlehem! Gladly they're back safe and sound now," the church posted on Facebook once the camels were returned.

In a seemingly unrelated event, 9News also reported a week after this camel outbreak that a middle-aged woman in Queensland was trampled by a camel on the Sushine Coast. The camel was reportedly walking freely around the Gympie region of Queensland on Saturday morning when it encountered the woman. She was taken to Gympie Hospital with wrist injuries.

According to local news, the rogue camel's origins are yet unknown.

The Coconuts Recipe Corner: French Onion Soup

French Onion Soup

By Dave Beaulieu, September 27th, 2010

https://www.noreciperequired.com/recipe/french-onion-soup

Soups are great in and of themselves, and French Onion may be the king of all soups.  It’s like having an awesome grilled cheese sandwich and bowl of delicious sweet savory onion goodness all at once.  I’ve spoken with a few people who have cringed at the idea of French onion soup – worries about how complicated, intricate and intense the process is, seemed to scare them away.  But in reality, although there are a few steps and some technique involved, there’s also a fair about of “wiggle” room (that means you can mess up) and all and all it’s pretty simple to make a great soup.

Prep Time  10minutes
Cook Time  75minutes
Total Time  85minutes

Ingredients

  • 3 – 4 Onions for 4 to 5 portions of soup.  Sliced julienne cut.
  • 2 – 3 cloves of garlic, minced
  • Thyme – Fresh if you have it, dry if not
  • ~ 48 ounce container (the big one) Beef or Chicken stock – homemade if you have it, but store bought is fine
  • A Swiss cheese – I like Gruyere, but you can also use Emmentaler, or any other good melting cheese
  • French baguette
  • Olive Oil
  • 1/3 cup of Cognac
  • Tomato pasta – optional
  • Flour - Optional

Recipe Overview

The critical components to a good French onion soup are the flavor of the broth itself and the texture/flavor of the cheese & bread topping.  To ensure the broth is great, make sure you spend the time caramelizing the onions and extracting their flavor.  For the topping, make sure you use enough cheese; when I started making this dish I regularly put too little on.

One note on the serving bowl – it matters.  Obviously the cheesy crust makes this soup, and one of the ways to help that crust stay on top of the soup and bake off nicely is to have a bowl that is narrower on the top than in the middle.  That narrow top helps the crostini and cheese “float” on top, so if you have that right bowl – use it.

Slice and start cooking the onions

  • You’re going to want thin strips of onions, so after cutting them in half and removing the skin slice them thinly and as uniformly as possible
  • The total cooking time for the onions may be up to 1.5 hours, so before I start prepping my other ingredients I put a pot on the flame and start the onions
  • Once the pot is hot, add a couple tablespoons of olive oil, the onions, as well as a couple pinches of salt.  Toss the onions to coat, and then leave them alone to cook.
  • Over the next 20 – 30 minutes the water in the onions will start to evaporate and the sugars will start browning.  Once that happens you’ll want to scrape down the bottom of the pot with a wooden spoon and mix up the onions.  You’re looking for all the onions to develop a medium (or darker) brown color, and you’ll probably have to scrape down the pot 5 – 6 times.
  • The one thing you want to watch here, is burning the onions.  You’ve got quick a bit of leeway, especially on medium heat, but you do have to watch and listen to the pot.  If you find they are looking too dark, just add a bit of water to the pot, that will cool things down.

Once the onions are fully caramelized

  • Add the minced garlic and thyme to the onions.  You want them to cook in the oil a bit, but they really only need a few minutes.
  • As an option, you can also add about a tablespoon of flour.  The flour will combine with the oil in the pan and make a roux.  If you do this, the finished broth will end up being a bit thicker with more body, it’s not traditional, but it’s also not bad.  But, don’t add too much flour, because you want the broth to be thin, and with too much flour and you’ll end up with a bisque like consistency – so err on the light side.
  • Also optional, is a small dab (a teaspoon) of tomato pasta.  This will also add a bit more body and flavor to the sauce, but again err on too little, as you don’t want the finished product to scream tomato.
  • If you use them, make sure you let the tomato and flour cook out for 5-6 minutes
  • The final step before adding our broth is to add about a 1/3 cup of Cognac.  The cognac adds a great flavor to the soup and is a key component.  Be careful adding the alcohol, as it may flame up on you.  If it does, that’s perfectly fine, the flames should die down in a minute or so, if not, just put a lid on the pot, and that will put it out.  Let the cognac cook off and reduce by half.

Add the broth

  • Once the congac is cooked down, go ahead and add the broth, bring it to a boil and let it simmer for about 30 minutes.
  • Taste
  • If the soup tastes too weak, let is continue to simmer, as the broth evaporates, the flavor will concentrate.  If needed, reseason with salt and pepper

The crostini

  • While the soup is simmering, cut enough rounds from the baguette to cover the top of your serving bowl(s), and bake them in the oven at about 300 degrees until they are firm and crunchy.
  • Grate enough of the cheese in long threads so that you create a layer of cheese about ¼ inch deep on top of the crostini.

The bake

  • Preheat your oven to 350 degrees
  • Fill the bowls nearly to the top with the onion and broth mixture making sure to get some of the cooked onions in there.  You’ll then want to lay the toasts on top, so that they just reach the top of the bowl, and then layer on the cheese.
  • It will help keep everything floating on top if you overlap some of the cheese with the bowl itself, and press the cheese into the bowl’s edge so it sticks a bit.  And the cooked cheese on the side of the bowl tastes great.
  • Put the bowls on a baking sheet and move to the oven for about 30 minutes until the top is melted and toasted brown.
  • Pull out of the oven and server….enjoy!!
