Simone Biles becomes
most decorated gymnast in world championship history
Simone Biles on Sunday became the most decorated world championship gymnast in history.
According to CNN, Biles made history on Sunday after clinching her 25th medal at the Artistic Gymnastics World Championships in Stuttgart, Germany. Biles had won the gold medal on the balance beam.
With the new medal, in addition to another gold medal she won on floor exercise earlier on Sunday, the 22-year-old star gymnast smashed a previous record that had previously been held by Belarusian Vitaly Scherbo for decades.
Prior this weekend, Scherbo held the title as the most decorated world championship gymnast after winning his 23rd world medal in 1996. However, Scherbo had only won 12 gold world medals throughout his career, according to The Associated Press.
After her performance on Sunday, Biles holds 19 gold world medals.
The new feat by Biles did not come as a surprise for some given the gymnast’s penchant for breaking records.
Last fall, Biles captured widespread attention after becoming the most decorated female gymnast in the history of the world championships.
At the same time, Biles was also named the first American in history to win a medal in every event at the world championships.
