Drunken Muslim Rioters Bombard London Police to Celebrate EID (Islamic Holy Day)

Eid celebrations rioters were high on drink or drugs say Muslim community leaders after barrage of missiles were hurled at baton-wielding police

  • Hundreds of Eid  revellers gathered in Southall in a standoff against police
  • Four million British Muslims celebrated the end of Ramadan
Muslim community leaders have condemned violence that broke out during Eid celebrations claiming that many of those involved were 'drunk or high on drugs'.

Videos circulating on social media show sticks, rubbish and other objects being hurled at baton-wielding police amid a standoff with hundreds of Eid revellers gathered in Southall, west London.

One officer can be seen telling crowds to 'get the f*** back' as his colleagues are pelted with filled plastic bags and other objects.

Other footage shows police rush at the crowd with their batons drawn, as they come under a barrage of missiles.

Locals also revealed that youngsters climbed bus stops, vandalised cars and behaved like 'yobs' on one of the holiest dates in the Islamic calendar.

Prominent local businessman Dalawar Chaudhry told MailOnline: 'These young Muslims are a disgrace to their religion and their families. They have brought great shame upon us, and their behaviour is totally unacceptable.

'They were drinking alcohol and taking drugs and it was just a matter of time before there was going to be trouble. What sort of Muslims are these? Many came just to fight the police. I hope that they are caught and strictly punished.'

He added: 'How can anyone in their right mind think that it is OK to celebrate such an important Muslim religious event by drinking alcohol and taking drugs? How they have conducted themselves goes totally against the spirit of Ramadan.'

Following the violence, mosques in the local area issued a joint statement to condemn the violence while imams delivered sermons slamming those who had taken part.

Qari Amin Chisty, imam at the Jamia Masjid in Southall said: 'People who behave like this are not welcome in our community.'

'Sadly, this is what is happening to our youngsters. They are turning into lawless yobs high on drugs and alcohol.'

'A lot of us are very angry at the actions of these mindless youngsters who should be ashamed of themselves.'

The violence broke out shortly before midnight on Tuesday 9 April on what is traditionally known as 'Chaand Raat' meaning the 'Night of the moon' which takes place on the eve of the festival of Eid al-Fitr, which is celebrated by Muslims worldwide to mark the end of Ramadan.

The Metropolitan Police said in a statement that a large crowd gathered on The Broadway in Southall as part of a pre-planned Eid Celebration on April 9.

The force said that following the disturbances at 12.22am on April 10, a section 35 dispersal order was authorised 'due to disorder' and the crowd had 'fully dispersed' by 2.30am.

Chief Superintendent Sean Wilson, in charge of policing in Ealing, said: 'Last night, local officers were in the Southall area to ensure the local community could celebrate Eid and reassure local businesses and residents.

'However, sadly, shortly before midnight, a number of young people became involved in  anti-social behaviour, including climbing on to bus stops.

'As officers attempted to speak with these people about their safety, they were surrounded by a crowd, and items, including bottles, were thrown towards them.

'This behaviour is completely unacceptable, and we will be reviewing what happened to establish what action can now be taken.
