Oakland Crime: Leftist Activist Pro-BLM Police Defunder Anarchist Baker Killed by Robbers

Left-wing activist baker who believes in abolishing police dies after robbers mowed her down at bank in Oakland - victim's family say killers shouldn't go to jail as murders soar 50%

  • Angel, 48, was killed after chasing after two people who robbed her in daylight
  • Anarchist baker's family and friends want 'alternatives' to prison for her killers
  • Police are investigating case as a homicide, no arrests have been made

The family of an Oakland baker and former publisher who espoused anarchist beliefs believe that the thieves who killed her in a daylight robbery and assault shouldn't go to jail and her death shouldn't be used to argue for more police.

Jennifer Angel, 48, founded Angel Cakes bakery in Oakland in 2008. Prior to that, she was a publisher of what she described as 'radical, progressive' magazines and a publicist for authors.

On Monday, Angel was leaving her car in front of a bank in uptown Oakland when two robbers smashed her car window and ran off with her belongings, her fiance Ocean Mottley said.

She then went after the robbers' getaway car, catching up with it but getting trapped in its door and being dragged over 50 feet. Her head was crushed on the sidewalk and the car drove away.

By Thursday, her family had confirmed her death after spending days in a coma at a local hospital.

While local authorities investigate her death as a homicide, the family has requested that her brutal killers not be sent to jail.

In a statement on a GoFundMe that has raised over $130,000 as of Saturday, those close to her said they would pursue 'alternatives' to prison for the criminals.

'As a long-time social movement activist and anarchist, Jen did not believe in state violence, carceral punishment, or incarceration as an effective or just solution to social violence and inequity,' they wrote.

They added: 'We know Jen would not want to continue the cycle of harm by bringing state-sanctioned violence to those involved in her death or to other members of Oakland's rich community.'

In fact, she once bragged on Facebook that she had taught her employees to do what she does and 'never call the cops.'

Emily Harris, a close friend of Angel and an 'anti-prison director,' told the San Francisco Chronicle that the statement fits with her radical liberal principles.

'I think Jen would affirm that of course that's what people have been trained to believe is the answer, to lock people up,' Harris said. 'But we know that if the people who cause her harm are sent to jail, all we're doing is perpetuating more harm.'

Before starting her bake shop, Angel was an editor of the left-wing publication Clamor and also worked for the seminal punk rock journal MaximumRocknRoll, as well as a personal zine entitled F**ktooth.

Leftist outlet Democracy Now and radical Canadian punk rockers Propagandhi were among those to celebrate Angel in her wake.

Democracy Now described Angel as 'actively involved in antiwar and anti-capitalist struggles through the years, including Occupy Wall Street.'

In a remembrance, Crimethincc quoted her stating her anarchist leanings as: 'The core tenets of anarchism are autonomy, mutual aid, voluntary association, and direct action. These are all positive things.'

Her bake shop's website even included a statement of political beliefs.

'[Angel] believes that Black Lives Matter and that every person has the right to choose their own gender identity and gender expression,' the store's 'About Us' section proclaims.

'As a shop we strive to reduce waste through limiting use of plastics and choosing products that are gentle on the environment. We do our best to be a good neighbor and community member through donating to and providing desserts for various social justice efforts, particularly in the areas of environmental justice, housing, and criminal justice reform.'

The GoFundMe celebrating Angel elaborates further.

'Jen believed in a world where everyone has the ability to live a dignified and joyful life and worked toward an ecologically sustainable and deeply participatory society in which all people have access to the things they need, decisions are made by those most directly affected by them, and all people are free and equal.'

During the Black Lives Matter protests in 2020, Angel posted articles in favor of both riots and looting on her Facebook page

They wrap up the GoFundMe, largely meant to continue her bake shop by asking that people 'do not use her legacy of care and community to further inflame narratives of fear, hatred, and vengeance, nor to advance putting public resources into policing, incarceration, or other state violence that perpetuates the cycles of violence that resulted in this tragedy.'

'We are really trying to orient towards her brilliant life, and that actually, she is not a person who would support the policing and imprisonment of the people who harmed her,' Harris, who called Angel her first political mentor, said.

'That doesn't mean that there isn't accountability that we would want ,' she added. 'What [that] could look like isn't about putting a person into further harm…but understanding how we're going to prevent this from happening to the next Jen Angel.'

Though crime in Oakland was down slightly from a 15-year high in 2021, 120 people were still murdered in the city, according to the San Jose Mercury News

Murders are still over 50 percent above the averages for the five years prior to the pandemic, as Oakland suffers the same issues with crime as neighbors San Francisco

Man Gets Off DUI, Needed to Escape 2 Angry Women, Wife Caught Him in Bed with Neighbor

That's one way to win a case! Northern California man escapes DUI conviction by arguing driving drunk was necessary to 'escape two angry women' after his wife caught him in bed with a neighbor who kept her llamas at their ranch

  • Thomas Patrick Houston, 60, of Ukiah, was found not guilty of two DUI charges under the 'act of necessity' as he had to escape 'two angry women'
  • Thomas was found performing oral sex on his neighbor Ann Landauer while he and his wife Lara were estranged after she asked to visit her llamas on the ranch
  • His lawyer argued that he had to escape the women who were hitting and throwing gravel at him

California man won his DUI case after he justified that drunk driving was necessary to 'escape two angry women' after his wife caught him cheating on her.

Thomas Patrick Houston, 60, of Ukiah, found his case in the Mendocino County Superior Court on February 3 after he was charged with two DUI misdemeanors in August 2022.

His lawyer, Albert J Kubanis, argued Thomas drove at a 0.11 BAC (blood alcohol content) out of 'necessity' because he was 'being attacked by two angry women, one of whom was his wife,' court documents revealed.

Houston's wife Lara, 61, had found him in bed with another woman, their neighbor, Ann Landauer, and a dispute started. Thomas and his wife were 'temporarily living apart due to martial difficulties,' the court documents, viewed by DailyMail.com, said.

Landauer had been housing her llamas on the couple's land, called the McNab Ranch, when she contacted Lara to inform her 'she would like to visit to check on her llamas,' which Lara set up through her husband.

Upon Ann's arrival at the ranch, she suggested she go pick up alcohol for the two of them and the pair hopped in her truck to Hopland to buy some. After returning to the ranch, they became intoxicated and then engaged in sexual activity.

Thomas Patrick Houston, 60, of Ukiah, was found not guilty of two DUI charges under the 'act of necessity' as he had to escape 'two angry women' after his wife found him sleeping with the neighbor during their estrangement

The home is equipped with surveillance footage available on Lara's phone. The first time she checked it, she discovered her estranged husband and neighbor drinking. But after checking it a second time, she noticed the house was quiet.

Lara then drove to the residence and found the pair 'engaged in sexual activity' in the guest bedroom.

Court documents reveal that Ann was 'completely nude,' while Thomas was found wearing a 't-shirt and boxer shorts' with his 'head between Ann's legs.' Upon noticing Lara in the room, they 'jumped out of bed.'

Lara flew into a rage and began 'pummeling Tommy with her hands.' Ann approached the other woman while Thomas ran out of the room toward his truck.

Both women eventually became enraged at Thomas and raced outside, where Ann began to throw gravel at him and his truck.

Kubanis argued that Thomas was 'forced to leave his residence under duress, causing him to drive while intoxicated.'

He then drove 200 yards away before pulling over and quickly falling asleep. Hours later, he would be arrested by the Sheriff's Office and California Highway Patrol for appearing 'intoxicated' at 2.10am.

Thomas pleaded not guilty in September and was acquitted in a four-day jury trial.

Mendocino County DA C David Eyster's Office revealed Houston won through the 'act of necessity'

DailyMail.com contacted the Houstons for comment, but they deferred to their lawyer Albert J Kubanis. DailyMail.com has attempted to reach him for comment.

The Mendocino County District Attorney's Office revealed on their Facebook that he won the use through the 'act of necessity,' which is justified under the law.

In order to prevail under the act of necessity, one must prove:

'1. He acted in an emergency to prevent significant bodily harm or evil to himself or someone else.

'2. He had no adequate legal alternative.

'3. The defendant’s driving under the influence and/or with a blood alcohol of .11/.11 did not create a greater danger than the one avoided.

'4. When the defendant acted, he actually believed that the act of driving under the influence and/or with a blood alcohol of .11/.11 was necessary to prevent the threatened harm or evil.

'5. A reasonable person would also have believed that driving under the influence and/or with a blood alcohol of .11/.11 was necessary under the circumstances.

'6. The defendant did not substantially contribute to the emergency.' the DA's Office said.

Effects of Drugs Given to Transitioning Girls: Turning Clitoris into Male Member, etc.

'What is happening is morally and medically appalling': Trans clinic whistleblower makes shocking claims about the harmful side-effects of drugs given to confused teenagers that 'deform' genitalia and cause bleeding

  • Jamie Reed worked at The Washington University Transgender Center
  • She says what is being done is causing 'permanent harm' to vulnerable kids
  • Reed says she can't sit back and watch the situation go on any longer

A whistleblower is speaking out after spending four years working at a trans clinic for kids, where she claims teenagers are prescribed harmful drugs they have no understanding of, after being coerced into transitioning because it's deemed trendy.

Jamie Reed worked at The Washington University Transgender Center at St. Louis Children's Hospital and was responsible for patient intake between 2018 and November 2022.

In an article for The Free Press today, she says she took the job with the intention of 'saving' trans kids, but that she believes what is happening amounts to 'permanent harm' on young, vulnerable children.

After four years, she says she became convinced the clinics were harming kids and families, whose understanding of the realities of the medical side-effects involved was scarily poor.

Doctors acted as though they were more entitled to make decisions than parents,  says Reed, and only one parent's consent was required in cases involving minors.

Reed cites examples of a 17-year-old girl's birth canal allegedly being 'ripped open' when she had sex while taking testosterone to transition to male, unaware that the drug would cause her to bleed extensively through her clothes if she had intercourse.

In other scenarios, she claims teenage girls were terrified when their clitorises turned into micro-penises while they took the drugs.

Some psychiatrically 'disturbed' children from juvenile detention centers were also presented because they had 'at some point' expressed an interest in changing gender.

The doctors I worked alongside at the Transgender Center said frequently about the treatment of our patients: “We are building the plane while we are flying it.” No one should be a passenger on that kind of aircraft.'

Among those patients, according to Reed, was a boy who'd been sexually abusing dogs.

'Somewhere along the way, he expressed a desire to become female, so he ended up being seen at our center.

'The way the American medical system is treating these patients is the opposite of the promise we make to “do no harm.”

'Instead, we are permanently harming the vulnerable patients in our care... what is happening to scores of children is morally and medically appalling.'

She describes seeing a sudden, sharp uptick in the number of young girls 'demanding testosterone', sometimes presenting themselves as 'clusters' from the same schools.

Reed perceived a 'lack of formal protocol' at the center, and that doctors ignored the fact young girls lied about having other illnesses and prescribed them hormones.

She reveals that in order for a young girl to start transitioning to male, all she needed to do was see a clinic-recommended therapist once or twice and obtain a letter of support for their decision.

That therapist was often given a template for the letter that was written by the clinic, according to Reed.

'Frequently, our patients declared they had disorders that no one believed they had.

'We had patients who said they had Tourette syndrome (but they didn’t); that they had tic disorders (but they didn’t); that they had multiple personalities (but they didn’t).

What is Bicalutamide?

Bicalutamide works by blocking the effects of the male hormone androgen.

It is sold under the brand name Casodex.

The drug was approved by the Food and Drug Administration in 2008 as a treatment for prostate cancer.

It blocks receptors in the central nervous and male reproductive systems responsible for producing androgen.

The hormone helps promote the growth of prostate cancer cells, and cutting them off can stop the disease from spreading.

In recent years, the drug has also started to be used off-label for transgender children and teens.

When used in this way, bicalutamide is sometimes called a 'puberty blocker'.

By stopping the release of androgen in a young person, the drugs can also block biological boys from becoming men.

Androgen is a key hormone during puberty that leads to a deep voice, Adam's apple, facial and body hair and the growth of the penis and testicles.

Similar blockers also exist for women, preventing the development of breasts and other female features.

The drugs were safe for use and had to undergo a rigorous pre-approval process.

But, there is little information on their long-term physical and psychological effects when used in children.

The effects are not thought to be permanent, but it takes years for the body to return to previous hormone secretion levels after coming off of the drugs.

'The doctors privately recognized these false self-diagnoses as a manifestation of social contagion,' Reed says.

'They even acknowledged that suicide has an element of social contagion. But when I said the clusters of girls streaming into our service looked as if their gender issues might be a manifestation of social contagion, the doctors said gender identity reflected something innate.'

Reed says she was hesitant to raise her concerns because anyone who did was deemed a 'transphobe'.

She describes warning young girls about the lasting physical effects of taking testosterone hormones - including sterility - but that they didn't understand the seriousness of what they were doing.

'Teenagers are simply not capable of fully grasping what it means to make the decision to become infertile while still a minor,' she writes.

'The center downplayed the negative consequences, and emphasized the need for transition.'

She lists one example of a young boy who wanted to transition to female. Neither he nor his family 'understood' the severe effects of Bicalutamide, one of the prescribed drugs he received.

Bicalumatide is predominantly used to treat prostate cancer and can lead to liver toxicity - which is what happened in this child's case.

It is frequently prescribed as a feminizing trans drug.

In this child's case, he ended up in the hospital. His parents threatened to sue, according to Reed, who had told colleagues the child wasn't ready to undergo therapy because neither he nor his family fully grasped the drug's side-effects

Another teenager who was taking testosterone to transition from female to male was unaware that the hormone caused her vaginal tissue to thin.

After having sex, she began bleeding uncontrollably, soaking through her jeans and a towel, before having to go to the emergency room where she was sedated and underwent vaginal surgery.

'Clinics like the one where I worked are creating a whole cohort of kids with atypical genitals - and most of these teens haven’t even had sex yet.

'They had no idea who they were going to be as adults. Yet all it took for them to permanently transform themselves was one or two short conversations with a therapist,' Reed writes.

She also includes emails from concerned parents revoking their consent for the medications and procedures, after their kids turned into 'shells' of themselves.

'Who knows if it's because of the hormone blockers or the other medications. I revoke my consent. I want the hormone blocker removed,' one mother wrote.

Reed also describes a terrifying lack in consultation with both parents.

She gives the example of a family where the father and mother were in the midst of a divorce and the mother was championing that their 11-year-old daughter be given puberty blockers to allow her transition to male.

Reed said she found the mother 'disturbing' and thought the child didn't meet the initial criteria to transition when she interviewed them.

Weeks later, the mother returned to the clinic with a different set of answers for Reed's questions, and her colleagues approved the girl for transition.

A judge then sided with the mother in court, allowing the child to move forward, despite her father's strong protest against it.

In 2019, Reed said she started noticing a growing number of patients deciding not to go through with transition, or deciding to return to the gender they had been previously.

She and her colleague started collating information about those patients with the assumption that the doctors would want to know about their change of heart.

'We thought the doctors would want to collect and understand this data in order to figure out what they had missed.

'We were wrong. One doctor wondered aloud why he would spend time on someone who was no longer his patient.'

She and her colleague started a 'red flag list' to keep track of kids who had changed their minds.

The hospital did not respond to Reed's allegations when contacted by DailyMail.com.

Reed transferred from the transgender center to a different department in November 2022.

She says the doctors at the hospital treat the issue of transitioning among teens as an 'experiment'.

'Experiments are supposed to be carefully designed. Hypotheses are supposed to be tested ethically.

'The doctors I worked alongside at the Transgender Center said frequently about the treatment of our patients: “We are building the plane while we are flying it.”

'No one should be a passenger on that kind of aircraft.'

Reed said in one instance a girl was prescribed cross-sex hormones because she did not want to become pregnant.

'There was no need for this girl to be prescribed cross-sex hormones. What she needed was basic sex education and maybe contraception,' she said, adding that a basic assessment of her case would have revealed that.

'But because the doctors automatically prescribe cross-sex hormones or puberty blockers for children meeting the bare minimum criteria, this girl was unnecessarily placed on drugs that cause irreversible change to the body.'

In another instance, a patient asked for their breasts to be removed and was given the surgery at St. Louis Children's Hospital - but later, the woman asked for them to be 'put back on.'

Reed draws the conclusion that proper assessment was not taken, and the patient was not properly informed that the changes were irreversible, according to the document.

'Three months later, the patient contacted the surgeon and asked for their breasts to be "put back on." Had a requisite and adequate assessment been performed before the procedure, the doctors could have prevented this patient from undergoing irreversible surgical change.'

'The Center regularly refers minors for gender transition surgery,' she said. 'The Center routinely gives out the names and contact information of surgeons to those under the age of 18.'

One 17-year-old patient was brought into the clinic by a man - who he was not related to. The teenager was living with the man.

The teenager started hormones 'as soon as they turned 18.' But the patient's mental health very quickly deteriorated -  and Reed claims it was soon revealed the man who initially bought the child to the clinic was sexually and physically abusing him.

Despite learning of the alleged abuse of power, the center did not stop the gender transition treatment, the affidavit claims.
