German man sets world record with 516 body modifications

Oct. 23 (UPI) -- A German man set a Guinness World Record for most body modifications -- and he says he isn't finished altering his body.

Rolf Buchholz said his enthusiasm for body modification didn't awaken until he got his first tattoo at age 40, but he soon became addicted and now has 516 body modifications, including tattoos, piercings and subdermal implants.

Buchholz previously set the world record for most piercings when they were officially counted at 453 -- including 158 around his lips alone.

Buchholz said he has added more body modifications since they were officially counted at 516, and he is still considering further modifications.

This Drive-Thru Haunted House in Japan is Bloody Scary–But They Wash Your Car After Terror is Over

By Good News Network - Oct 21, 2020

It’s safe to say the drive-thru car wash experience is similar around the world: You pay your money, make sure all the windows are closed so you don’t get soaked, then let brushes and water jets do their thing until the cycle is finished and you can drive away in your sparklingly clean vehicle.

That’s not quite how things are working at this ghoulish Tokyo pop-up experience.

At Kowagarasetai Obakeyashiki, drive into the darkness of a covered downtown parking garage, and expect to wail and howl as blood lashes the windows, haunted zombies scratch at the doors, and terrifying ghouls rock the car.

Don’t worry: Once you’ve lived through the ‘stuck in a vehicle in a zombie apocalypse’ experience, your car will be thoroughly sterilized and wiped clean.

You can even place your order for an “extra bloody” experience—a $9 add-on.

For haunted house and horror event production company Kowagarasetai–aka the “the Scaredy Squad”–the idea of doing a haunted car wash actually came about because of the pandemic.

“With the virus, I knew there would be no way we could have a traditional haunted house, with all that screaming in a small confined space,” founder Kenta Iwana told CNN Travel. “When I read that drive-through theaters were making a comeback, it was my ‘aha’ moment.”

With that spark, Iwana and the actors have created a thrillingly disturbing experience.

If you aren’t in the Japanese capital, or if you don’t have $75 to spend on going through the zombie wringer right now, just watch the digital version of the experience. Lights out, let’s go.

A farm attack took place on Sunday 18 October 2020, at 11:00, at Goewerneurskop farm in Clocolan, in the in the Free State Province of South Africa. A woman, Magaretha Groenewald (67), was robbed and kidnapped by a known African male Lebohang Rooi (23).

According to the victim, the suspect arrived by foot at her house at the farm in the morning at about 08:00 and requested the Curriculum Vitae as he worked at the farm few years ago. At that time the victim was with her daughter and was relaxed. She said she will compile the CV for him on Monday morning 19 October 2020. The suspect left and said he will come back Monday morning.

However at about 10:30 the victim’s daughter drove to her own farm and the victim remained alone at her farm. After a few minutes the victim heard someone at the door and she went to check and found out that it was Lebohang again. She was still relaxed and then suddenly Lebohang pointed her with a firearm, demanded money and instructed her to open the safe. He took R400.

At that moment the victim managed to make a call to her son who is staying at another neighbouring farm. She loudly asked Lebohang if he wanted to kill her. The son noted that the situation was unusual and called the Police as well as other neighbouring farmers for assistance.

The suspect further ordered the victim to get into her vehicle and drive him out of the farm towards R708 Clocolan Marquard road where he will get a hike to go back to his home in Botshabelo.

Ford government to overhaul Blue Bin program

By: Richard Southern, Oct 19, 2020
https://www.kitchenertoday.com/local-news/exclusive-ford-government-to-overhaul-blue-bin-program-2802597

The Ford government (Ontario Can.) is changing who will be responsible for the Blue Box recycling program as well as expanding the items that can be put into the blue box itself.

CityNews has learned Ontario’s Environment Minister will announce today that producers of products and packaging will be fully responsible for the Blue Box program.

The Blue Box program is currently run by the Ontario Stewardship Council with the cost split among the municipalities. But the Ford government will shift to a new model where producers of the waste – businesses – will provide blue box collection and pay for the entire cost.

The government claims the move will result in an estimated savings of $135 million annually for municipalities.

Government officials say there should not be any interruption to the program during the transition, saying that those who have curbside blue box collection now will continue to have it under the new system. The government also says the Beer Store’s deposit return program can continue under the new producer responsibility model.

The transition is set to take effect at different times across the province.

The government is also set to announce that the list of materials accepted in the blue box will increase to include paper and plastic cups, wraps, foils, trays, bags and other single use items such as stir sticks, straws, cutlery and plates.

The Ford government will also expand blue box services to include apartment buildings, long-term care homes, schools and municipal parks in 2026.

The official announcement is scheduled for 9 a.m. Monday, and will be the first of a series of announcements as part of Waste Reduction Week.

Ontario is the birthplace of the blue-box.

The curbside recycling program was first introduced in Kitchener in 1981.

Got any signal up here? Nokia to build mobile network on the moon

By Anne Kauranen, Reuters Oct. 19, 2020

HELSINKI (Reuters) - Struggling to get a phone signal at home on planet Earth? Perhaps you'll have better luck on the moon.

Nokia has been selected by NASA to build the first cellular network on the moon, the Finnish company said on Monday, as the U.S. space agency plans for a future where humans return there and establish lunar settlements.

NASA aims to return humans to the moon by 2024 and dig in for a long-term presence there under its Artemis programme.

Nokia said the first wireless broadband communications system in space would be built on the lunar surface in late 2022, before humans make it back there.

It will partner with a Texas-based private space craft design company, Intuitive Machines, to deliver the equipment to the moon on their lunar lander. The network will configure itself and establish a 4G/LTE communications system on the moon, Nokia said, though the aim would be to eventually switch to 5G

The network will give astronauts voice and video communications capabilities, and allow telemetry and biometric data exchange, as well as the deployment and remote control of lunar rovers and other robotic devices, according to the company.

The network will be designed to withstand the extreme conditions of the launch and lunar landing, and to operate in space. It will have to be sent to the moon in an extremely compact form to meet the stringent size, weight and power constraints of space payloads.

Nokia said the network would be using 4G/LTE, in use worldwide for the last decade, instead of the latest 5G technology, because the former was a more known quantity with proven reliability. The company would also "pursue space applications of LTE's successor technology, 5G".
