Biden’s Catastrophic Global Warming Policies

Biden’s Catastrophic Global Warming Policies

If you thought last year was bad, wait until these proposed policies tear through the economy.

Bruce Thornton is a Shillman Journalism Fellow at the David Horowitz Freedom Center.

At the “virtual world summit” President Biden announced that he’s committing this country to cut CO2 emissions to half of 2005 levels by 2030. Just trying to reach this ambitious goal will require severely damaging the economy in order to achieve something that won’t stop the alleged catastrophic effects of a rise in temperature that may or may not happen.

If you thought last year’s debacle wrought by self-proclaimed “experts” was bad, just wait until these proposed policies tear through the economy. Once more, the party that “follows the science” will wreak havoc by mistaking a dubious hypothesis for a scientific fact.

As the Wall Street Journal writes, previous such policies have done little to stop what are in fact relatively slight increases in global temperatures. For one obvious thing, whatever suicidal Western nations do, China and India, the world’s first and third biggest emitters, will undo. Even “climate czar” John Kerry admitted that whatever reductions in emissions we accomplish, it will have little impact on warming unless China and India reduce theirs––something both countries refuse to do, having made it clear that they will not follow the West into economic suicide.

But didn’t China sign the Paris Accord? Yet under that “parchment barrier,” China is not obligated even to start reducing its emissions until 2030, the same year our emissions are supposed to be drastically reduced. Can nobody in the current administration calculate the huge economic advantage that will accrue to China in ten years? Meanwhile, the communist regime continues to build dirty coal-fired energy plants. And, does anybody believe China’s empty promises, given their record of violating the terms of every agreement it signs with the West, such as WTO and WHO?

Furthermore, that’s just one roadblock. The policies necessary to reduce emissions by the Paris Accord’s 26-28% that Biden and the green lobby want, will be devastating to the economy. As the Journal reports, replacing carbon-based energy with so-called “renewables” would alone ruin the economy, while only lowering global temperatures by a scant 0.17% Celsius, nowhere near the 1.5 degrees that will supposedly stop the predicted global catastrophe. In any case, most of the reduction that occurred during the Obama years was due to natural gas replacing coal––a dividend of the fracking revolution, not Obama’s onerous regulations. So, of course, Biden has banned fracking on public lands, stopped the Keystone pipeline, and continued the animus against nuclear power.

The basic fact that the green progressives, which apparently now include Joe Biden, ignore is that we can’t build enough wind-towers or install enough solar panels to replace carbon-based energy. Transitioning automobiles to electric power is also a fantasy. We’ve had electric cars for years, and they still aren’t profitable without government subsidies and bribes. There aren’t enough high-speed charging stations, nor an electrical grid that could handle the extra electricity  necessary to replace natural gas and gasoline.

Even worse, the costly side-effects of switching to electric cars are rarely acknowledged by their promoters. As Kevin Grieve writes on Townhall,

Ironically, in classic socialist fashion, these cars are subsidized with “other people’s money” via the federal $7500 car tax credit. Never mind the strip mining, toxic chemical leaching, and massive water consumption of rare metal lithium extraction for non-recycled car batteries. Ignore the fact that if your electric generation source comes from coal-burning power plants, which is about 20% of the US grid, you have damaged the environment far more significantly than any gas-powered vehicle. And you still need to account for the mini toxic hazard that will have been created when it comes time to dispose of these carcinogenic, half-ton batteries.

But the real scandal is that the catastrophic, anthropogenic global warming hypothesis is getting pretty wobbly, calling into question the whole pretext for Biden’s exorbitant program.  Numerous scientists are retreating from the predictions of a climate apocalypse. Zeke Hausfather, Glen Peters, Justin Ritchie,  Hadi Dowlatabadi, Roger Pielke Jr., David Wallace-Wells, and Steven Kooninc are some of the scientists who are “backing away from a worst-case scenario peddled to the public for years as ‘business as usual,’” as the Journal’s Holman Jenkins Jr. recently wrote. It seems the “science” is not so “settled” after all. Yet despite this advice from people doing actual science and casting a skeptical eye on a hypothesis, the Biden cabal is hell-bent on going down the “Green New Deal” road and destroying our economy.

So what’s really going on? Grubby self-interest, for one thing. Global warming has been a gold-mine for “climate science” researchers, electric car manufacturers, “green energy” subsidies and consultants, globe-trotting EU and UN functionaries, “renewable energy” businesses, and the global warming lobby comprising grant-hounds, grifters, celebrities, and carnival acts like Greta Thunberg. All of this climate advocacy generates billions of dollars a year. How else did Al Gore become a multi-millionaire who can afford to use private, carbon-spewing jets to attend climate-change confabs?

But there’s a more sinister force at work. For decades the Left has made common cause with the environmental movement as a tool for discrediting and weakening the free-market economies of the West. That’s why at global protests the hammer-and-sickle flies next to Greenpeace flags: both outfits are protesting against the liberal democratic, free-market order that kicked communism into the dustbin of history. As Andrew Dobson writes, the political environmentalists represent a “challenge to the political, social and scientific consensus that has dominated the last two or three hundred years of public life.” The creator and manager of this consensus has been the West, and for the last century especially the United States. Green crises like global warming provide opportunities for countries like Germany, as vain about its environmental purity as it is about its pacifism, to criticize the U.S. and damage its prestige.

Environmentalism, then, is a bludgeon for weakening and dividing the U.S. The powerful myths of nature going back to the ancient Greeks predispose many people to take seriously claims that our way of life and consumption are destroying the earth, a sermon preached in school curricula, government programs, and movies like Avatar and Pocahontas. These assumptions are best epitomized in the Charter of the Global Greens, a network of Green political parties. First comes the Mother Nature rhetoric: “We acknowledge that human beings are part of the natural world and we respect the specific value of all forms including non-human species,” which supposedly include lethal viruses and bacteria. But dastardly capitalists and industrialists are causing “extreme deterioration in the environment,” as well as fomenting “injustice, racism, poverty, ignorance, corruption, crime and violence, armed conflict and the search for maximum short-term profit [that] are causing widespread human suffering.”

Such talk is music to the Left’s ears. No matter that actual communist and socialist regimes have been some of the worst polluters in history, or that free-market capitalism has lifted billions across the globe from extreme poverty.  Catastrophic global warming is the mother of all “crises” that “shouldn’t go to waste.” Addressing global warming exacts huge costs, both in taxpayer money and the thousands of regulations that erode profits, drive up prices for consumers, and make large-scale infrastructure projects more expensive.

More important, it demonizes the democratic-capitalist order, leaving many people, particularly the callow young, vulnerable to the siren song of socialism and radical climate policies like the Green New Deal. Just as Marxism benefitted from the crisis of capitalism in the 1930s, so too today the costs and trade-offs of making the U.S. the freest, richest, most well-fed, leisured, and entertained people in human history can be manipulated and exaggerated to sell promises of a better political and social order that will deliver the same high standards of living without destroying the planet.

That, of course, is a delusion. Actually following through on Biden’s climate policies, which require a massive increase in federal power, redistribution of wealth, and onerous regulations, will further move the country toward socialism, while doing nothing to address the “crisis” that is the pretext for such a fundamental transformation. And, like all collectivist economic regimes, it will devastate our economy.

For our geopolitical rivals, such an outcome is devoutly to be wished.

Is farm productivity already declining due to climate change?

Is farm productivity already declining due to climate change?

Climate alarmists would have you believe that climate change is already hurting farm productivity. But hasn’t farm productivity been relentlessly rising?

One of the leading climate alarmist publications in the world, The Guardian, published a shocking headline recently: ‘Rapid global heating is hurting farm productivity, study finds’.

At first, it seems like an April Fool’s joke. After all, it had been published on 1 April, and everyone knows farm productivity is relentlessly rising.

Upon reading it, however, one realises that the publication is deadly serious about this.

I call The Guardian ‘alarmist’ not because I like throwing pejoratives around. It is alarmist because it colludes with 400 other publications to employ ever more severe, value-laden words to describe climate change.

The latest addition to the propaganda arsenal, also adopted by publications such as Scientific American, is the term ‘climate emergency’ used in lieu of ‘climate change’. It also recently replaced ‘global warming’ with ‘global heating’.

With reported average global surface temperatures a mere 1°C above 1880 levels, of which human activity is supposedly responsible for about half, there hardly seems much justification for such superlatives. Their use firmly takes The Guardian and its co-conspirators out of the journalism camp and into outright ideological advocacy.

Try challenge even just one aspect of their climate change narrative, and see where that gets you, these days.

It is not surprising, then, that The Guardian is pulling out all the stops to demonstrate that we really are in an emergency. Besides yelling ‘climate change’ (or rather, ‘climate emergency!’) every time there’s some bad weather or a fire, the latest attempt to do so turns everything we thought we knew about agriculture on its head.

‘The climate crisis is already eating into the output of the world’s agricultural systems,’ The Guardian’s Oliver Milman wrote, ‘with productivity much lower than it would have been if humans hadn’t rapidly heated the planet, new research has found.’

The research, according to the article, says that farm productivity ‘has actually slumped by 21% since 1961, compared to if the world hadn’t been subjected to human-induced heating.’

Clever rhetorical trick

Arguing that farm productivity is not as great as it might have been is a clever rhetorical trick. In reality, agricultural output has been rising hell for leather since 1961.

The production of maize and wheat is up by over 200%. Rice and soybeans are up about 150%. Barley is up over 100%, and bananas, peas, beans, potatoes, cocoa beans and cassava are all up between 50% and 100%.

In all the above cases, the productivity growth rate has not slowed down, despite a modest rise in average global temperatures over the almost 60-year period.

So, what did the ‘research’ involve, then? First, they try to determine total factor productivity for agriculture around the world. This is supposed to measure total output in crops or livestock as a function of inputs such as labour, land, capital and materials.

Then they create a complicated formula relating observed and unobserved inputs, technological knowledge, and the effect of the weather to aggregate output.

The authors leave unexplained how they determine ‘unobserved’ inputs, or even what they are. They don’t explain why the effect of weather is the only factor represented by an exponential function. They don’t explain how they calculate the ‘technological knowledge’ factor, either.

They then construct a quadratic formula to calculate the actual effect of weather as a function of temperature and rainfall. Why a quadratic, is anyone’s guess. It’s all pretty opaque to the lay mind.

A complex econometric model is constructed in this manner, covering 172 different countries. These are then linked to numerous counterfactual climate scenarios using a popular ensemble of climate models. Climate models are themselves notorious for their complexity.

Somehow, out of all this complexity, drops a precise number: 20.8%, which represents how much lower agricultural output is in reality than it might have been had human-induced climate change not intervened.

The problem with complexity is that it can lead to what modellers call an ‘uncertainty cascade’. That is when additional complexity can make a model conceptually more complete, while making its predictions less and less useful.

Yet more uncertainty

The number of constants and coefficients that need to be estimated to achieve the paper’s results suggests the final number is no better than an educated guess. Coupling uncertainty with uncertainty produces yet more uncertainty, but that did not deter our brave modellers, who undoubtedly knew exactly what result they wanted.

The paper worries that the speculative impacts of climate change appear to fall most heavily upon sub-Saharan Africa. Yet it makes no effort to address the fact that fertiliser use in sub-Saharan Africa is less than 10% of the global average, leaving its cereal crop yield at 25% of what it could be. This could easily explain all the effects the paper attributes instead to the weather.

The massive headroom in yields in Africa also certainly suggests that even if climate change has a small negative impact on agricultural productivity, this can easily be counteracted by improved farming methods.

The paper doesn’t explain why climate change would have a negative impact on agriculture in the first place, however.

Higher levels of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere boost crop yields and improve the water-use efficiency of plants. The paper itself shows no significant changes in precipitation, and there is not much of a trend in droughts globally, either. It is unclear, therefore, by what mechanism a half-degree temperature rise might adversely affect farm productivity.

Overall, the approach taken in the paper looks a lot like self-gratification for data junkies and statistics nerds. It has so many variables that it could be tuned to produce just about any result you want, and as such, it cannot tell us anything useful about the world.

Risen inexorably

The Guardian does not feel we should celebrate that we’re still comfortably able to feed the growing world population, or that we need only 30% of the land we needed in 1961 to produce the same amount of crops, or that the total area of Earth’s surface dedicated to farming has reached its peak, or that the share of people that are undernourished in developing countries was three times as high in the 1960s as it is today, or that per capita calorie intake has risen inexorably since 1961, both globally and in Africa, or that Africa lags the rest of the world by only two decades in this regard.

No, we need to fret over the fact that in a changing climate (sorry, emergency!!!), we face continuing population growth and the need to feed more people. We should ignore that the global population growth rate peaked at 2.2% in 1962/3, has halved since then, and will approach zero by the end of the century.

We should ignore that there is no indication in the real-world statistics (as opposed to their craftily constructed computer models) that agricultural productivity is facing an imminent reversal from its long-term trend.

And we should definitely ignore the fact that poverty and hunger, far from being associated with climate change (excuse me, the climate panic!), is strongly associated with socialism, corruption, poor governance and conflict.

That would be a micro-aggression against The Guardian’s eco-socialist dreams, and we simply could not tolerate that.

IT ALL USED TO WORK LIKE CLOCKWORK!

 South Africa Freedom Day:

"IT ALL USED TO WORK LIKE CLOCKWORK!"

Destruction, thy name is African National Congress!  Disintegration, degradation, decay and denial are the hallmarks of this organisation which the world hailed as the saviour of South Africa. Currently going viral is a black Boksburg resident’s WhatsApp video of a crumbling Boksburg East railway station. He laments the “apocalyptic” ruination of a once beautiful concourse east of Johannesburg. The rails are “on air” because the wooden sleepers have been stolen, while on a nearby line, the iron rails have been plundered, leaving the sleepers to rot in the sun. “The ANC has messed up big time” says the Boksburg resident. “Things used to run like clockwork under apartheid. Like a Swiss clock. No one can mess up like the ANC. They are useless. They are criminal – they are good at destruction.”  He declares that “we are doomed”.

Railway tracks have been stolen all over the country. Between Brakpan and Springs on this same East rand, virtually nothing is left: rails and sleepers have disappeared. Overhead electricity lines have been stolen, supporting poles are bent or broken, while security fencing has been carted off in trucks and wheelbarrows. The Springs railway police, a unit responsible for patrolling this particular corridor, are not around:  not a single vehicle is available to monitor this rail environment.

These examples are the tip of the iceberg. Throughout South Africa, our once world-class railway system is being plundered piece by piece. In addition, most of the country’s ancillary roads are illusions – they have become like the rest of Africa – potholes, no side tar edging, grass growing its way into the road centre. Verges and sidewalks have become small forests, as high as a man. Everyone sees the decay but the ANC doesn’t care – they are concentrating on winning the next election. Pillaging has become a way of life for them: they are people whose ability to parasite is second to none.  No matter how much president Ramaphosa pumps up his fairy stories about new projects and exciting investments , third world dissipation has taken over. We know the signs – we see it all over Africa. Does the ANC see this disintegration? Someone said they see nothing ugly and they see nothing beautiful.  As one former Transkei official told a visiting American many years ago, “we don’t care if the roads turn to dust, as long as we get rid of the whites”. Their roads of course did turn to dust.

What a tragedy to watch one’s country disintegrate under a destructive force calling itself a government, a rag tag bunch of bush revolutionaries whose only claim to fame is that they are proficient at terror, corruption  and destruction. Those responsible for assisting this travesty – the British, American and sundry European governments - are now averting their eyes. The overseas press is silent, while churches both here and abroad occasionally rap the ANC plunderers’ knuckles. But there is no definitive call to get rid of this ANC plague, in contrast to the world’s cacophony to defeat “white minority rule” in South Africa. The country’s citizens of all races pay the price for this international cowardice and political correctness.

DYING

In a recent merciless editorial, political commentator Gareth van Onselen talks of a dying city, Johannesburg, once the star of Africa. “You can map Johannesburg’s decay, using official numbers and statistics – debt, maintenance backlogs, inner-city investment. They paint a depressing picture. But off the record and between the lines, there are no numbers. They are too big. But they are the city’s real condition. You can no longer properly quantify the degradation. It has spiralled past the point of control. Managing the city is no longer an exercise in damage control so much as it is an exercise in uncontrolled damage. Age and disrepair mean the city’s infrastructure has turned in on itself – the more it is fixed, the more it breaks”.

Continues van Onselen:  “Take (electricity) load shedding. (Read: blackouts). Cut the electricity and fuses blow, sub-stations explode and cell phone reception dies. The skeleton that underpins the city is so malnourished, so weak and fragile, that to suspend the blood supply for a moment means any number of bones break, and supporting tissue tears. All the while, residents are asked to “play their part”, to watch consumption for, as Rand Water puts it, the system might “collapse”. It’s a kind of polite blackmail, but with the blackmailer who never keeps up his end of the bargain. The more citizens play their part, the worse things seem to get.”

BEYOND REDEMPTION

“There is no money”, says van Onselen. “For anything.  Measure the city against its true debt and it is not just bankrupt but beyond redemption. There is no sum of money that could fix all of this in fifty years. The cost grows to outstrip income two to one on any given day. At night Johannesburg goes dark. Street lights don’t work, or are kept off to save electricity.  If it rains, the city turns into a series of tributaries as blocked or broken drains overflow and the roads become rivers. The torrents sweep away more infrastructure with them. There are many things you take for granted in a city – greenery for instance. Johannesburg once touted itself as one of the most treed cities in the world. Today the trees are dying. They are infected with the polyphagous shot hole borer beetle. The whole city is sick. You see these sicknesses everywhere - incompetence, greed, corruption. It’s rotten to the core and there is no sign of new life, on any front.”

“Johannesburg is terminal. Those places people meet and pass each other by – train stations, bus stops, bridges, public swimming pools and parks – are falling apart. You do not meet there, as you might in a functioning, healthy city, but you get away from them, as fast as you can, if only because the place itself is so unpleasant, so neglected and dirty. Stay and you can almost see things fall apart. You can watch the paint peel, or a wall crumble. It happens in real time.”

“Technically you could agree that Johannesburg is a city” says van Onselen, “but only technically. In truth it is just an idea. It is a battle ground where you fight to keep up the pretence of order in the face of an ever -increasing entropy that has taken on a life of its own. Ultimately there will only be one winner.”

WHOLESALE FRAUD

The story behind the rot is the deployment of ANC political pals to jobs for which they are hopelessly unqualified.  But these deployees don’t care, and nor does the ANC government. Perusing advertisements for these jobs, it is clear that great fraud is being perpetrated against the citizens of South Africa. Despite the president’s stentorian pronouncements that race is not a yardstick for competence, he ensures that his government’s Black Economic Empowerment (BEE) policy is well and truly embedded in all state job offers. In other words, whites need not apply. Political friends are given the jobs, while the qualifications needed to satisfy the job performance are not even considered. What the South African Qualifications Authority is doing with its time is moot, but it is certainly not overseeing this particular fraudulent practice. Many of the political deployees to these positions could not meet the employment requirements in a hundred years.

After the ANC takeover in 1994, one Johannesburg municipality saw ANC cadres simply walk into the then-occupied offices and advise the occupants that the ANC was now running the show “and if you don’t like it you can go”. There was not the slightest shame or discomfort that these nouveau political appointees could not possibly do their jobs. That matter was of no consequence  – the ANC was in charge and that was that. The decay set in as the competent class packed up and left. These instant replacements’ salaries started at around R1 million a year, and they proceeded to demand huge increases annually. Productivity took a dive. Says a black commentator discussing ANC comrades in government service (Mail & Guardian 9.4.21): “Looking at ANC comrades who should never have aspired to public service, the rot and malfeasance oozes from every pore, but they hold on to public office and the power that comes with it. They have benefactors who fund their life of luxury yet never hesitate to appropriate the struggles of the poor with slogans that begin with “our people”. Acting on principle and in the interest of the nation is a fool’s pastime, they believe”.

The recent news that 35% - more than 3 300 of the 9477 senior managers in national and provincial departments - do not have the necessary qualifications for their jobs is no surprise. These departments include, crucially, the police and the department of justice and correctional services, inter alia. How did the ANC get away with this? Did these people actually apply for jobs advertised, or did they simply march into the offices on instructions from Luthuli House? Is president Ramaphosa aware of this? Of course he is. It is significant that the president himself was at one stage on the ANC’s cadre deployment committee!

One of the more bizarre offshoots of this farce is the media coverage of various ANC mayors and managers currently and very publicly filling potholes on South Africa’s roads, suddenly aware that these holes were causing not only vehicle damage but deaths. Couldn’t they see the potholes over the years?  Jacob Mamabolo, Gauteng’s MEC for roads and traffic, thanked a newspaper reporter for “bringing the question of potholes to his attention”. So what usually takes his attention?

The public has moved in to repair roads, sewage plants, electrical substations, water pumps and other appurtenances of municipal infrastructure. Judges have ordered this action as citizens dip into their pockets to approach the courts so that they themselves can fix the country. Those in power do not apologise, nor do they feel shame. What drives these ANC people? What is in their DNA that they firstly destroy, then hang on to their jobs while others fix their destruction? Where else in the world does one find this mentality? Jobs for pals and the retention of power is the same primal mentality we find in the more primitive African countries. This is not to say that there are not pockets of first world competence, cleanliness, and sound structure in South Africa, but not courtesy of the ANC. Where they are in charge, mayhem rules. Millions of concerned South Africans do their best to try and live with dignity, but it’s an uphill battle. Cape Town for example is still one of the world’s most beautiful cities but of late it has suffered terrible fires allegedly started by homeless people who have simply taken up residence there, living on the streets. One Tanzanian man who lost his tent said he had been living without papers in Cape Town for ten years. There are millions like him all over South Africa.

CRIME INDEX

The international Crime Index 2021 carried out by statistics website Numbeo.com says six of South Africa’s cities are ranked within the twenty most dangerous in the world. After Caracas in Venezuela and Port Moresby in New Guinea – the two most dangerous cities  - Pretoria comes in at number three, Durban  fourth, Johannesburg fifth, Pietermaritzburg seventh and Port Elizabeth 14th. Nineteenth is Cape Town. Comparably, Baghdad is 55, Syria’s Damascus 31and Bogota, Columbia 58. How’s that for Nelson Mandela’s legacy! Abu Dhabi, an autocratic dictatorship in the United Arab Emirates is placed at number one, with Dubai and Sharjah, both in the same UAE and also dictatorships, in the first ten in the world for safety and security. South Africa’s cities only emerged as hell holes under the ANC’s so-called democracy. Who convinced the people who gave our country to the ANC that democracy was the answer?  These persuaders are today as silent as the grave.

Canadian city Hamilton opens up vaccine eligibility to people 18 and over in outbreak hot spots, as long as they aren't WHITE

Canadian city Hamilton opens up vaccine eligibility to people 18 and over in outbreak hot spots, as long as they aren't WHITE

Hamilton, a Canadian port city on Lake Ontario, has responded to a jump in Covid-19 cases by making vaccines available to all adults in “hot spot” neighborhoods, but only to residents whose skin isn't white.

The city expanded vaccine eligibility to “black and other racialized” people aged 18 and older who live in five zip codes where the current outbreak is most acute. A special clinic set up to vaccinate only non-white residents filled its appointment book in just a few hours last week.

The move comes amid a Covid-19 case surge so severe that Ontario Premier Doug Ford earlier this month set up checkpoints at the province's borders with Manitoba and Quebec, and tightened already severe lockdown restrictions. With the province unable to secure enough vaccine doses as new strains cause the virus to spread more quickly, Ford said “we're losing the battle between the variants and the vaccines.”

Isaac Newton Benefited from ‘Colonial-Era Activity’

‘White Saviour’ Isaac Newton Benefited from ‘Colonial-Era Activity’, Claims University: Report

The grandfather of modern physics, Sir Isaac Newton, has become the latest target of the woke mob in the push to “decolonise the curriculum”, as Sheffield University is reportedly set to contextualise lessons on Newton with claims about him benefiting from “colonial-era activity”.

Students at the university in the north of England will reportedly have lessons on Netwon’s groundbreaking three laws of motion, including the law of gravity, with explainers detailing the “global origins and historical context” of his theories.

Professors in the engineering department of Sheffield University will seek to “challenge long-standing conscious and unconscious biases” among pupils and to confront the supposed “white saviour” and “Eurocentric” view of science and mathematics, according to documents seen by The Telegraph.

A diversity consultant at several top universities in Britain decried the efforts to decolonise the curriculum, warning that the movement is expanding from the traditionally left-wing humanities departments into the hard sciences.

“I’m employed by universities to do this training but for me equality, diversity and inclusion training is equality of opportunity, diversity of thought and inclusivity of action – that’s all,” the unnamed consultant said.

“This is something different altogether. It is blatantly teaching people to be activists,” the consultant added.

A leaked copy of the university’s “draft inclusive curriculum development” strategy developed by the Russell Group research university claims that “much important engineering content and curriculum resources is based on maths developed in the 18/19th century”.

It goes on to say that scientists such as Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz, Paul Dirac, Pierre-Simon Laplace, and Newton could all “be considered as benefiting from colonial-era activity”.

The documents did not explain how Newton benefitted from colonialism. On the contrary, it is known that he lost some £20,000 in investments in a failed slave trade company.

Science writer and Isaac Newton biographer James Gleick said: “Whether Newton’s foolish investment in South Sea shares in 1720 means that he participated in the slave trade is arguable.

“I doubt he thought about it. I would say that all England benefited from colonialism. The correct response to that is to teach it.”

The general secretary of the Free Speech Union, Toby Young, added: “Newton famously said, ‘If I have seen further it is by standing on the shoulders of giants.’ Everyone studying maths or engineering deserves to stand on Newton’s shoulders so they, too, can see further, regardless of their ethnicity.”

Newton is not the only celebrated British scientist to fall foul of the woke mob, with samples collected by English naturist Charles Darwin being swept up in a review of potentially “offensive” exhibits at the UK’s Natural History Museum in September.

Amid the resurgence of the Black Lives Matter movement in the UK following the death of George Floyd in the American city of Minneapolis last year, universities seized upon the moment to push their anti-British Empire agenda.

In February, for example, the University of Leicester scrapped studies in Medieval English, including Chaucer’s The Canterbury Tales and the Anglo-Saxon epic poem Beowolf, in favour of courses centring around diversity, race, and sexuality.

The government’s universities minister, Michelle Donelan, has warned that the leftist push on campus is similar to the Soviet Union’s efforts to “whitewash” history.

“The so-called decolonisation of the curriculum is, in effect, censoring history,” she said, adding: “It otherwise becomes fiction, if you start editing it, taking bits out that we view as stains.”

Man faces 15 years in jail for killing, eating mother

Man faces 15 years in jail for killing, eating mother

According to the indictment, the incident occurred in early 2019 when the suspect had a row with his 69-year-old mother at the flat they shared.

Madrid – Spanish prosecutors are demanding a 15-year sentence for a man who strangled his mother, chopped up her body then ate her remains who went on trial in Madrid this week.

Known as the “cannibal of Ventas” after the district where police discovered the blood-stained flat containing some grisly remains, the suspect — Albert S.G. — is on trial for murder and desecrating a body.

According to the indictment, the incident occurred in early 2019 when the suspect had a row with his 69-year-old mother at the flat they shared in Ventas next to Madrid’s famous bullring.

During the confrontation, he strangled his mother then dragged her into her bedroom where he used a saw and two kitchen knives to cut her up “in order to get rid of the body”, it said.

“Once he had started cutting up the body, he began eating the remains over the course of about 15 days, storing other parts in various plastic containers around the house and in the fridge,” it said.

He also put some of the remains into plastic bags and threw them into the bin.

Testifying in court on Wednesday, a police officer who entered the flat said the suspect told them he had eaten some of the remains raw, while others parts he had cooked or given to the dog, local media reported.

The suspect was arrested on February 23, 2019, after police turned up to inquire after his mother who had been reported missing by a friend, local media reports said at the time.

Asked at the door if his mother was inside, he said she was, and let them in.

“We found a hellish scene,” an unidentified police officer told Telecinco news channel, with police saying the suspect was known for having drug issues.

Prosecutors want him jailed for 15 years and have called for him to pay 90,000 euros ($110,000) in compensation to his older brother.
