Los Angeles Crime: Sheriff says Defunders Destroyed Once-Great American Cities

'Woke-ism is on the ropes. Let's put it out of its misery': LA County sheriff Alex Villanueva says 'defunders' have destroyed once-great American cities and that his 'only goal is to make Los Angeles liveable again'

  • Sheriff Alex Villanueva, 59, said 'wokeism' is on the ropes and called on voters to identify 'defunders' and vote them out of office
  • He called out the LA County Board of Supervisors, which he said subscribe are from an 'elite political class'
  • Homicides jumped 95 percent in 2021 from the previous year and grand theft auto is up 60 percent
  • Blaming law enforcement for being a threat to the community is part of an 'alternative version of reality,' the sheriff said

Los Angeles County Sheriff Alex Villanueva, who is running for re-election in June, ripped into woke politicians for undermining public safety and making the city's subway system 'worse than Third World conditions.'

Villanueva, the first Democrat to be elected sheriff in LA in 138 years, called out the county Board of Supervisors, who he labeled '14 woke individuals' who are trying to defund his department in the middle of a major crime spree.

Los Angeles saw a 94 percent increase in homicide in 2021 from the year before, the sheriff said.

'That's a number my Board of Supervisors still won't say,' he said at Saturday's forum with the sheriffs of San Bernadino and Riverside counties.

The county has also seen a 60 percent increase in grand theft auto.

The city has been plagued a spiking crime rate and homeless population. There's also been an increase in violent robberies by 'follow-home gangs' which scope out wealthy shopping districts and neighborhoods looking to carjack luxury cars or rob consumers of their just-purchased expensive goods.

'My only goal is to make LA liveable again,' he said.

Villanueva also laid the blame at District Attorney George Gascon.

'We can't have this alternative version of reality,' he told Fox News on Sunday. 'The fact is that people are dying on the street and it's not because of law enforcement. It's because of the absence of law enforcement and the absence of enforcing the rule of law with our progressive DA George Gascon.'

In the last year, violent robberies and smash-and-grab thefts have skyrocketed in Los Angeles. Robberies are up nearly 18 percent in the year-to-date compared to 2021, while those involving a firearm have surged by nearly 50 percent in the same time period

Gascon, who advocated for lax bail laws and refuses to prosecute certain crimes, is currently the target of a referendum to have him removed from office by Los Angeles residents fed up with the out-of-control crime in the city. They are currently gathering signatures and hope to oust him from office by the summer.

He rejected the 'false narrative' that cops create a threat to young black men, saying it is black and brown communities who suffer from the crime spike.

'They were trying to sell the idea that law enforcement was an existential threat to young men and I said 'bull sh**' Young men are an existential threat to young men because of the dumb things they do,' he said.

'We have a very elite political class, I call them the 'woke privileged crowd,' he told Fox News on Sunday. 'They're still insisting on defunding here in LA county. And they're still pushing that false narrative that we're some sort of existential threat.'

A group of at least 17 gangs targeting Los Angeles' wealthiest are responsible for the city's recent string of 'follow-home' robberies, cops said Tuesday, during a brief discussing the department's work to put an end to the coordinated strikes. He went one step further and encouraged voters to find out which politicians promoted the defund movement and vote them out.

'Figure out who's running for office or who currently in office up re-election and if they have a track record of being a 'defunder,' make sure that everybody knows,' he told the crowd.

All these fancy terms, they didn't work, the results are in, it was an absolute failure,' he said. 'Lets' get people in elected office at the national level, state level, county level, city level, that are responsible and I don't care what party they come from but as long as they're going to vote for public safety and taking care of the community, we got to support them.'

Villanueva isn't the only Democrat who has punched back against his party's ultra-left wing.

On Sunday night, New York City Mayor Eric Adams told 60 Minutes that he intended to give police 'the tools to deal with violence right now.'

'Democrats don't like talking about intervention,' said Adams, 61. 'But we have to lean into the discomfort of the immediate things we must do. Because you can't say when a police officer shoots a young person, but does that Black Lives Matter when a 12-year-old baby was shot?'

The LA Sheriff is also dealing with out-of-control homelessness.

Villanueva said that a quarter of the country's homeless population lives in LA county.

Recently, the corpse of a homeless man who died on the city's transit system was left on a train for six hours.

Adams is seen as the main suspect of  several other robberies taking place all across L.A. with most of them taking place in Hollywood, between January and March of this year. Two robberies were also reported in Burbank and in the neighborhood of West L.A.

'I didn't know how explain that one. Then the MTA board of directors says we don't want more cops on the line, but the want to increase the outreach to our homeless population. The result is 5,700 homeless live on our trains in LA. You can't make that one up. It's just bizarre.'

The mentality from the Los Angeles MTA has been to avoid arresting the homeless.

'That means [if there is a] transient smoking meth, buck naked in a train doing unspeakable things to himself in front of your family and kids, then they're instructed to escort you out of out of the train and leave the disturbed party on the train, because for them it is a sanctuary. You can't make this stuff up.'

He said that the mentality is backward and it's hurting the city.

'This is what happens when you have 14 woke individuals, the public safety advisory committee, and the members of the MTA board, they all worship at the alter of wokeism. They decided that cops are mean and people feel intimidated and threatened by law enforcement. So they prefer the guy smoking meth. I kid you not.'

LA FOLLOW-HOME ROBBERIES TERRIFY CITY

The LAPD created the 'Follow-home' robbery task force to combat roving gangs the use spotters to scope out wealthy Angelenos in up-scale shopping districts and neighborhoods and violently take their jewelry and expensive cars. They're also dealing with follow-up robberies - where victims are targeted after leaving local businesses

  • 17 'Follow-home' gangs from South Los Angeles have been working independently
  • 2 people have been killed so far, and a total of 23 have been shot
  • The task force has made 24 arrests tied to 47 robberies
  • In 2021, cops identified 165 'follow-home' robberies
  • So far in 2022 there have been  56 muggings
  • Cops have served 278 search warrants

The county Board of Supervisors is also threatening to rid the department of all those who have not been fully vaccinated, despite a negligible difference in the infection rates between unvaccinated and the vaccinated.

'I don't even know what words to describe the board of supervisors right now, but they insist on doubling down on stupid while the community is suffering from those effects of defunding,' Villanueva said. 'We lost 1281 personnel due to their budget cuts while they're sitting on a $2 billion surplus and they're defunding the Sheriff's Department. On top of that now this move to expose up to 4000 of our employees to being terminated. It's an absolutely idiotic concept that they're pushing and the people that pay the price are the community that and least afford the loss of law enforcement.'

Villanueva has come under fire since he was elected in 2017 for clashing with police oversight agencies. Last year, California Attorney General Xavier Becerra launched a civil rights investigation into the department for excessive force and police misconduct. The sheriff's department has been accused of allowing police gangs, called 'deputy gangs' which have been accused of violence and aggressive policing.

He also implemented the use of body cameras by members of his department and stopped cooperating with federal immigration officials seeking deportation of undocumented immigrants.

The sheriff called for a renewed focus on public safety after the calls to defund the police that spread nationwide in 2020.

'I think 2022 is going to be a special year,' he said at the public forum. 'I think it's going to be a referendum on a national disease that's finally going to see a cure coming along. Wokeism is on the ropes, let's put it out of its misery in 2022.'

Animal Rights Protester Tackled While Storming Basketball Court

An animal rights activist was tackled while attempting to storm the basketball court during the Grizzlies-Timberwolves playoff game at Minnesota’s Target Center on Saturday.

The incident was the third time an animal rights activist targeted Timberwolves majority owner Glen Taylor over his alleged “inhumane treatment” of animals following an outbreak of bird flu at one of his egg factories.

Activist Sasha Zemmel of St. Louis has claimed credit for the protest, according to animal rights group Direct Action Everywhere

According to a press release, Zemmel “attempted to whistle to stop play as she approached Taylor at his courtside seat, to issue a ‘technical foul and ejection,’ along with a ‘fine’ against Forbes’ richest billionaire in Minnesota.”

“Zemmel’s makeshift referee jersey had the jersey number 5.3 displayed on the back, in honor of the 5.3 million chickens killed at Rembrandt following an outbreak of ‘highly pathogenic avian influenza’ (HPAI). DxE’s video shows birds on-site which survived ‘ventilation shutdown plus’ (VSD+), a mass killing method whereby ventilation openings in the industrial sheds full of birds are closed, and some combination of heat, steam and/or carbon dioxide gas are introduced, eventually killing the animals via suffocation. Dozens of surviving birds were found still in their cages, running loose in the sheds, even buried alive,” the release said.

Another activist with the group previously chained herself to the basketball hoop wearing a shirt that read “Glen Taylor Roasts Animals Alive.”

On April 12, activist Alicia Santurio glued her hands to the court during the Timberwolves’ game against the Los Angeles Clippers.

Hollywood star and the co-owner of Wrexham FC, Ryan Reynolds, has gifted a commemorative urinal to Rob McElhenney at the club's stadium.

The pair took full control of the National League club from the Wrexham Supporters Trust in February 2021, investing £2m.

Reynolds posted a video on Twitter of himself in the toilet, wishing his co-owner a happy 45th birthday.

He cut a small red ribbon revealing a gold plaque with McElhenney's face on it and popped a bottle of bubbly.

Alongside his face, the plaque was inscribed with his name and birthdate and has been placed above a urinal in a bathroom block at the Racecourse Ground.

The plaque read: "This urinal is dedicated to Robert McElhenney on his birthday - April 14.

"With love from Wrexham AFC, paid for by Ryan Reynolds."

In the video, Reynolds delivered a speech, while emotional music played in the background.

He said: "Today we commemorate a man, not just any man, Mr co-chairman Robert Lucinda McElhenney, with this memorial urinal."

Wrexham AFC was formed at The Turf in 1864 and the Racecourse remains the world's oldest stadium that continues to stage international games.

McElhenney is the creator and producer of the long-running American TV series It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia, in which he also stars.

'Epic disaster': CNN+ shutdown leaves laid-off staffers furious, Fox News gloats

'Epic disaster': CNN+ shutdown leaves laid-off staffers furious as Fox News gloats all evening: 'The Democratic bench is thinner than Chris Wallace’s demo reel'

  • CNN's new CEO on Thursday informed staff of CNN+ that the streaming service was closing - just three weeks after it launched
  • The 300 staffers already working there have been told that CNN will try and find them work within the company, or else they will get six months severance
  • Many of those who were enticed to join the new streaming service reacted with incredulity and anger to the news, coming so soon after the launch
  • CNN's critics - among them Fox News hosts and Donald Trump - spent Thursday gloating about the collapse of their rival's project

Staff at CNN's short-lived streaming service CNN+ have been left 'aghast and furious' at management after the decision to end the service after only three weeks - describing it as 'an absolute debacle.'

CNN's new CEO Chris Licht - who does not officially take over until May 2 - told staff on Thursday that CNN+ was ending.

The service only began on March 29, and producers had lured over talent including former Fox News anchor Chris Wallace, MSNBC's Kasie Hunt, actress Eva Longoria, and chef Alison Roman.

The demise of CNN+ was greeted with joy by Fox News figures such as Greg Gutfeld, as well as critics of the network including Donald Trump and his son.

Insiders estimated the network spent $300 million launching and between $100 million and $200 million advertising. CNN had been planning to spend more than $1 billion on CNN+ over four years, two people familiar with the matter told The New York Times.

David Zaslav, who since the beginning of this month has led the newly-merged massive media giant, had been expected to bring in changes.

But one veteran staffer told The Washington Post: 'We expected them to cut off a few fingers, not the entire arm.'

David Zaslav, the president and CEO of Warner Bros. Discovery, took the helm of the newly-merged media company on April 8.

The 300 employees who had already started working at CNN+ were left fuming by Thursday's announcement - despite the network saying it would try to transfer them to open positions in the company.

Layoffs are likely for people who are not placed in new jobs; they would receive at least six months of severance, according to reports.

Plenty within the service felt they had not been given a chance.

'Many people left their stable jobs at CNN to go to CNN+ and then they pull it right after launch?' a source told The New York Post.

'Everyone is aghast and furious.'

Sara Sidner, who moved from LA to New York to host a CNN+ show, told Thursday's meeting that the decision to end it so soon was 'mind-blowing'

Another source complained to the paper: 'The big people will likely be saved, but what about everybody else, the people who do the real work?'

Another was even more blunt.

'This is f****** crazy, it is nuts.

'This literally rivals the epic disaster of Quibi,' the insider said, referring to the short-lived streaming platform that went out of business seven months after it launched in April 2020.

Licht broke the news on Thursday at a meeting held in a TV studio on the 19th floor of CNN's headquarters in New York.

After his speech, according to The Washington Post, Sara Sidner, a long-serving CNN correspondent who moved from Los Angeles to New York to host a CNN Plus show, stood up and told the shocked crowd: 'This is mind-blowing, to be perfectly honest.'

She later tweeted: 'It's over. It's been the shortest most amazing ride #CNNPlus team.'

Hunt, reportedly enticed to leave MSNBC with a $1 million contract, tweeted: 'The journalists I have been privileged to work with on CNN Plus are world class.

'I am so incredibly proud to be able to call them colleagues.

'If your organization would like a chance to benefit from their talents, my DMs are open

'This is *my* job for the foreseeable future.

She added: '(Some of you are asking about me. I am proud to be on team CNN. I will be fine. It's not about me right now.)'

Sources told The Post that CNN 'overspent on talent' by giving Wallace $9 million per year.

He is now thought likely to take over the 9 p.m. slot on CNN left vacant after the firing of Chris Cuomo in December.

Donald Trump was among those celebrating the demise of CNN's new venture.

'Congratulations to CNN+ on their decision to immediately FOLD for a lack of ratings, or viewers in any way, shape, or form,' Trump said in a statement issued on Thursday.

'It was like an empty desert out there despite spending hundreds of millions of dollars and the hiring of low-rated Chris Wallace, a man who tried so hard to be his father, Mike, but lacked the talent and whatever else is necessary to be a star.

'In any event, it's just one more piece of CNN and Fake News that we don't have to bother with anymore!'

His son, Donald Trump Jr, tweeted a mocking meme, showing the famous dancing pallbearers of Ghana, with the CNN logo on the coffin.

Fox News hosts were also gloating about their rival network's struggles.

Greg Gutfeld joked repeatedly about the situation on Thursday, commenting during a discussion about leaders of the Democratic Party: 'The Democratic bench is thinner than Chris Wallace's demo reel from CNN+.'

He later added: 'BLM has done to black people what Chris Wallace did to CNN+. He enticed them with a promise and then ditched them on the side of the road.'

In another instance he joked, 'A lot of these solutions that are coming from the left are unreliable, there are solar panels or windmills. Look at CNN+, how much money they invested in wind power by hiring Chris Wallace.'

During the final segment, Gutfeld aired a clip of a bison roaming through a town.

'I haven't done a celebrity sighting in awhile,' he began. 'As we know, CNN+ closed down, so you see a lot of their talent out on the street.

'For example, I just looked out at Sixth Avenue, and who did I see just hanging out in front of a tavern? None other than, guess? Chris Wallace, just wandering around.'

The decision to close the streaming service, Licht told staff, was not due to any failure on their park.

The service has attracted 150,000 subscribers so far, paying $5.99 a month, and were on a pace to hit first-year subscription goals.

CNN+ was unable to show the same news shows as CNN, owing to existing contracts with cable tv providers. But they had encouraged their stars like Anderson Cooper to branch out into a parenting show, and had given Don Lemon a chat show.

Yet CNN's new parent company, Warner Bros. Discovery - officially formed from a merger on April 8 - was unimpressed by the figures.

At any given time, fewer than 10,000 people were watching the service, two people familiar with the numbers told The New York Times.

'It's not your fault that you had the rug pulled out from underneath you,' Licht said on Thursday, according to a recording reviewed by the paper.

'The new owner came in and said: 'What a beautiful house! But I need an apartment.'

'And that doesn't take anything away from this beautiful house you built. I am proud of it, and I am proud of this team, and I am gutted by what this means for you.'
