How an airline passenger tracked the 'wild ride' of her lost luggage

Over 20 million people have viewed Valerie Szybala's Twitter thread since New Year's Day - as she documented the route her luggage took before its eventual return to her - all thanks to an Apple AirTag.

The chance of your luggage going missing is among the most anxiety-inducing facets of any flight, especially one taken amid the holiday rush.

Unfortunately for Valerie Szybala, that's precisely the scenario that she began 2023 contending with after a domestic US journey from Chicago back to her home in Washington.

In a viral Twitter thread beginning with a post that's amassed more than 20 million views since New Year's Day, she documented the "wild ride" her bag took on its eventual return to her - all thanks to an Apple AirTag.

While the small, disc-shaped devices have come under fire over fears that people can use them for criminal or malicious purposes, they are designed to be attached to keys, wallets, and other belongings to help find lost items.

Informed by airline United that her bag had not made it on to the flight to Washington, and safe in the knowledge an AirTag was attached, Ms Szybala took up the offer of having it delivered by courier.

Its apparent journey from that point on was one she could scarcely believe.

The apartment complex

Concerned about the whereabouts of her luggage, Ms Szybala investigated an apartment complex the AirTag suggested was housing her belongings.

On 1 January, three days after the bag was said to have departed the airport, she tweeted it had been "sitting in a residential complex for over a day".

"Out back by the dumpsters, I have found other emptied United Airlines bags," she added.

Ms Szybala shared screenshots of a conversation she had with a support representative from the airline, who had assured her the bag was still on course for delivery.

"I am sorry, I don't know why it is showing there," they said of the AirTag's assertion that it was elsewhere, even suggesting that Ms Szybala "calm down".

A trip to McDonald's

Later that day came a "major update" regarding Ms Szybala's luggage.

Sharing a picture of her bag's position on a map, she said: "For the first time since Friday my AirTag (and hopefully luggage) appears to be on the move… it's at a McDonalds?

"The plot thickens."

The McDonald's in question appeared to be on Rhode Island Avenue, near a shopping centre bearing its name.

It eventually left the fast food restaurant, returning to the apartment complex.

On the road again

The second day of the new year brought hope that the luggage would find its way to Ms Szybala's home.

"My AirTag is on the move! It's about 16 miles outside of the city in the suburbs," she tweeted.

"Hopefully this means it is on a delivery run?"

Unfortunately, her hopeful fingers crossed emoji was misplaced, as the bag ended up going back to the flats.

The reunion

Following the bag's latest return to the flats, Ms Szybala enlisted a "little posse" - including local news crews - to go with her to the building.

A text message purporting to be the courier followed, telling her that the bag would be delivered on the day and encouraging her to "call me or text me if any questions".

"It's sketchy, and it doesn't really match with what my AirTag tracking said, but I immediately called the number," revealed Ms Szybala.

"The dude who picked up was around the corner, so he drove back to meet me near the building.

"He looked a little surprised to have two news crews filming. He asked if he was in trouble or something, but at that moment I was too happy to have my bag back to ask more questions."

Ms Szybala encouraged her followers, who were left on tenterhooks by her day-to-day sleuthing, to use tracking devices on their luggage in case a similar situation befalls them.

A United spokesperson told Sky News: "We've been in touch with this customer to discuss this situation and confirm she has received her luggage.

"The service our baggage delivery vendor provided does not meet our standards, and we are investigating what happened to lead to this service failure."

HOW DO AIRTAGS WORK?

AirTags are loaded with what Apple calls its U1 chip, which is essentially able to "ping" any other Apple device out in the wild to triangulate the precise location of the AirTag itself.

Because there are so many iPhones out there, this chip means the AirTag doesn't rely on more familiar location tech like GPS.

To see where an AirTag is, users open the Find My app on an iPhone - and newer handsets can get precise on-screen, SatNav-style directions.

Misplaced AirTags can be put into a "lost mode", which allows users to enter a custom message that displays on someone's phone when they hold it near the lost AirTag - like contact details, for example.

It all sounds pretty convenient, and when used as intended as in the case of missing luggage, it can prove excellent value.

But some have expressed concern about the gadget's potential to track people rather than items, with criminals or stalkers theoretically capable of slipping one into someone's bag or even on their car.

Apple insists it has made AirTags "stalkerproof", because the Find My app will alert people if one of the gadgets that does not belong to them, and is assigned to someone else, is detected for an extended period of time.

But the company is the focus of a class-action lawsuit in San Francisco, brought by two women alleging the devices made it easier for ex-partners to track them down.

For most of the 20th century, Sweden was held up as the very model of a modern welfare state: prosperous and peaceful, a example of social cohesion that was the product not of “diversity,” but of the very lack of “diversity.” That homogeneous Sweden is no longer. Five teenage Syrian Muslim “migrants” have been charged on suspicion of gang-raping a young woman in a park in Malmö, Sweden. The brutal assault was interrupted by two police officers who happened to be patrolling the area. The victim’s attorney said her client experienced every woman’s worst nightmare.

It was around eleven o’clock in the evening on October 22, 2022, when a police patrol passed Kungsparken park in Malmö.

Police saw a group of young people near a casino located in the park. As the patrol officers approached, the gang dispersed. Only after the woman approached the police and told them she was gang raped did they realize they had interrupted a brutal attack.

Four Syrian migrants were arrested on the evening of the assault, while the fifth was taken into custody the day after. The suspected Islamic rapists are all young migrants; an 18-year-old, two 17-year-olds, a 16-year-old, and a 15-year-old.

They all have been charged with aggravated rape of the woman, who is said to be a young woman in her 20s.

According to the indictment, the migrants pinned the woman down, raped her repeatedly, and severely abused her. During the rape, the accused men are suspected of jointly holding her down. Four of the five deny the crime, and the fifth admits the course of events but denies doing anything wrong.

Though only one of these Muslim assailants said he had done nothing wrong, the other four, who simply denied the crime, no doubt felt the same. After all, the Infidel woman, out alone at night, and dressed as Swedish women in their 20s now dress was, according to their Muslim moral code clearly “asking for it.” Why should they be punished for remaining true to their own traditions and understandings? It doesn’t seem fair.

The police have found the woman’s DNA on four of the perpetrators. Belongings from the woman have also been found on one of the boys, and there are images from surveillance cameras showing how they moved around the crime scene.

“My client has experienced a woman’s worst nightmare, being raped in a park by five guys. She has felt, and still feels, very bad from this,” said her lawyer Kristina Bandrup.

Sweden’s Mass Immigration

Sweden has, in just two generations, gone from being one of the safest countries in the world to one of the most dangerous countries in Europe. Meanwhile, mass immigration has dramatically altered Sweden’s population, reports Gatestone.

While Sweden’s population remained almost exclusively Swedish for most of the 20th century, the share of migrants and their descendants has quickly soared to about a third of a total population of roughly 10 million.

Sweden has one of the world’s worst recorded rape rates. In 2018, the state broadcaster SVT revealed that 58% of men convicted in Sweden of rape and attempted rape over the previous five years were born abroad. Some of the most brutal rape cases have involved Muslim or African immigrants.

The foreign-born are responsible for 58% of those in Sweden who are convicted of rape and attempted rape, while making up only 17% of the general population. That means those foreign-born, almost all of them from Muslim countries, are more than three times as likely to be convicted of rape and attempted rape than native Swedes. Yet the Swedish authorities take care not to publicize these and related figures on general criminality, fearing that the so-called “far-right” members of the Swedish Democrats would cite them as reasons for cutting down on the number of Muslim immigrants. Stockholm’s political and media elites continue to deny a worrisome reality, because they don’t want to be blamed for having caused this mess in the first place, by their criminal laxity on immigration.

Globalists’ multicultural experiment in Sweden has resulted in Swedes no longer being safe in their own country. The journalist Ingrid Carlqvist explains that immigrants have been destroying “our country”:

They are destroying our country and making us terrified of everything. It’s the violence from these immigrants, it is the rapes, the killings, and you know, just not being safe in your own country that makes people very, very scared and desperate, and they lose hope.

Swedish children are being tortured and abused in school and in the evenings throughout the country. There are constant cases of immigrant kids, mainly Muslims beating up, raping, and torturing Swedes. Carlqvist reports that the Islamic immigrants and their children “have a very aggressive culture, and they hate us.” She goes on to explain:

They think that they have a mission from Allah to take over this country. So they really enjoy humiliating and beating up young Swedes.

Is there anything here that has been exaggerated? Don’t Swedes now feel, in Stockholm, Gothenburg, and Malmö and a half-dozen other cities, much less safe than they did 20 years go? Don’t Swedish women now fear to go out alone at night? In Malmö, once a center of Jewish life, now the the few hundred Jews who still live in the city must worry about street attacks on them by Muslims. They are especially vulnerable to attacks by Muslim gangs, who simply beat up Jews for the sheer fun of it. These immigrants, taught in the Qur’an to despise Infidels, are quite unlike those placid and industrious and grateful migrants who arrived in Sweden earlier from eastern Europe.

In the now familiar approach to these issues, the left-wing Swedish rulers and their media refuse to address the underlying cause of the phenomenon of Muslim rapists – Islam’s canonical intrinsic devaluing of women. Islam teaches that a woman is worth less than a man. And a non-Muslim woman is worth less than an Islamic one. According to the words of Muhammad and the Quran, men are in charge of women. Prophet Muhammad actually encouraged the rape of women captured in battle. He even provided instructions on how women should be raped after capture, telling his men not to worry about coitus interruptus since “Allah has written whom he is going to create.” Allah also told Muslim men to rape women captured in battle; they were told to do it in front of their husbands.

The migrant rapist’s treatment of women is learned from the Islamic faith and his Prophet’s example. There is nothing unusual or deviant in how the Swedish woman was treated in Islamic terms. Instead of the Swedish left-wing politicians and media condemning Islam’s view on women, they will insist the migrant’s crimes are isolated and protect their socialist and sanitized reconstruction of Islam, created for Western consumption. The cost of covering for Islam continues to put Westerners in great harm.”

 

Sweden's violent crime surge could be linked to 'extreme' immigration policies

 

Sweden’s welfare system is now wobbling, and may collapse as a result of the staggering sums the government must now expend on these Muslim migrants, who are masters of taking advantage of every benefit the generous Swedish welfare state offers. They live in free or greatly subsidized housing, receive free food, clothing allowances, enjoy free medical care and free education, including language lessons and lessons in “Swedish culture.” These lessons in language and Swedish culture are intended to provide Muslim migrants with the tools that will allow them to better integrate into society, but these last lessons have been singular failures. Why should a Muslim migrant who, as the Qur’an tells him, belongs to the “best of peoples,” want to integrate into a society fashioned by and for Infidels who are – again according to the Qur’an – “the most vile of created beings”? It is only when Muslim migrants stop thinking in such terms that there may be hope for some of them to integrate into Swedish society. How likely is that to happen?

Meanwhile, the Swedes themselves should recognize that their naive dream of integrating Muslim migrants is incapable of being realized, not for want of trying on the part of the indigenous Swedes, but because of the attitudes of the Muslims themselves, who are in no hurry to be employed, but are happy to pocket whatever they are offered by the welfare state, aid which they regard as a kind of proleptic Jizyah. It would be folly for the Swedes to blame themselves for this state of affairs. In fact, much the same outcome can be observed in all the European countries where large numbers of Muslims have been allowed to settle. But Sweden’s elites have been particularly naïve, and allowed into their country, during the last two decades, immigrants who mow make up close to 20% of the current population (and the Sweden-born children of migrants make up another 12%).

At the very least, one hopes that a sufficient number of Swedes will come to their senses, and work to halt all further Muslim immigration into their country. If some feel there is an economic need for migrants to perform menial tasks, instead of letting in Muslims who, in any case, are not eager to work hard, and feel only contempt for and resentment of the Infidel Swedes, the Swedish government can bring in more of the millions of Ukrainian refugees now clamoring to be let in. These Ukrainians are the real refugees, fleeing possible death in a war zone, unlike the Muslims from North Africa and the Middle East who are only economic migrants, hoping to batten on the offerings provided by European welfare states. Many of those Orthodox Ukrainians differ from the largely Lutheran Swedes in sect, but share the same religious heritage (Christianity), and have the same views about the equality of men and woman, about the natural political, civil, and religious rights of all people, and about the desirability of democracy, none of which are shared by the Muslim migrants.

If Sweden can do these things, it should still be possible for the country that gave the world King Gustavus Adolphus, Linnaeus, Ingmar Bergman and Ingrid Bergman, smorgasbord, glög, and Akvavit, and Raoul Wallenberg, to step back from the brink. Swedish elites made a big mistake in opening their doors to Muslim migrants. But all is not lost. There is still time, by voting in the Swedish Democrats, to reverse course.

Most antisemitic hate crimes against Jewish people in New York City were targeted at Orthodox or Hasidic Jews and were perpetuated by people from other minority groups, a new report has found.

The report was published by Americans Against Antisemitism and documents antisemitic crimes in New York City between April 2018 and August 2022.   

Overall, 194 cases were recorded in those four years, with 154 being physical assaults and the other 40 verbal. 22% of crimes were committed by teenagers and 23% were committed by a group of two or more people.

An estimated 97% of the 194 hate crimes documented were carried out by people belonging to other minority groups. Furthermore, 94% of victims in antisemitic incidences in those four years were Orthodox or Hasidic Jews, the report stated.

Of those targeted, 52% identified as Hasidic Jews and a further 42% as Orthodox Jews. 4% identified as secular and another 2% as Modern-Orthodox. A further 0.5% identified as Reform and finally, 0.5% were Israelis who did not list a denomination.

Where did these incidences occur?

151 of all assaults occurred in just four Brooklyn neighborhoods - in Flatbush-Midwood, Crown Heights, Boro Park-Kensington and Williamsburg. 

All the aforementioned neighborhoods are home to large and identifiable Jewish communities

The identities of perpetrators were documented in 99 different attacks. According to the report, 65% of perpetrators were Black, 16% Asian, 10% Hispanic and 3% were White.

Of all 194 cases, there were only two occurrences where the attacker was convicted and sentenced to prison.

UK Parliament buildings are infested with 'super-mice'

The Mouse of Commons! Historic Parliament buildings are infested with 'super-mice' that can evade traps and are resistant to several poisons, official review finds

Parliament  is infested with super-mice which evade traps and are immune to bait, an official review has found.

Tens of thousands of pounds are spent each year trying to combat Westminster’s rodent problem, yet the four-legged pests persist.

Parliamentary authorities commissioned an internal review into the problem which revealed mice roaming the Commons and Lords are far harder to kill than regular rodents.

The Rodent Control Strategy Review, released under Freedom of Information laws, revealed there are around 600 ‘bait boxes’ in Westminster’s kitchens and catering areas.

But the mice appear to be resistant to several of the poisons - confirmed after House authorities asked the University of Reading to carry out DNA profiling on mouse tails.

The report stated: ‘Currently, we are using brodifacoum in the baits. Our use of anticoagulants [poisons] is severely restricted by the high levels of resistance in the mouse population at [the] Palace of Westminster.

‘Last year we undertook a DNA profiling exercise with Reading University on 4 house mouse tails. The results indicate a very high incidence of resistance, not only to first generation anticoagulants, but also to difenacoum and bromadiolone.

‘Both the known mutations (L128S and Y139C) were present in three of the four tails profiled and one (L128S) was present in the other mouse. We are therefore not able to use these anticoagulants on site.’

The report, compiled in 2020, goes on to say that parliamentary authorities suspect the mice are also resistant to difethialone, which would be the ‘first ever case of resistance to difethialone in house mice’.

According to experts, difethialone should be ‘very toxic to rats and mice’, with even a tiny dose usually enough to kill. It can even be harmful to humans.

There is also ‘behavioural resistance’ among Westminster’s mice population which is said to have existed for some 20 years, making it difficult to find bait that the mice will eat.

The report notes: ‘It is entirely possible that we have mice that will either not take baits or will not go into the bait boxes (this latter characteristic is becoming increasingly an issue in food premises throughout the country).’

In November, it emerged that Parliament’s food hygiene rating had slipped from five to two.

The Spectator reported that mouse droppings were found in many of Parliament’s catering areas - with 19 separate cases of droppings recorded.

Westminster City Council’s health inspection report also said there was a lack of ‘adequate monitoring’, and suggested that ‘thorough daily cleaning’ was not regularly taking place.

But the authorities say Parliament is a ‘safe place to work and eat’ and insist they are committed to a ‘humane and ethical’ pest control programme.

Staff in the Palace of Westminster have long had to contend with mice in their offices - forcing some workers to take matters into their own hands by sourcing traps.

And in 2014, Penny Mordaunt - now the Commons Leader - brought her own cat to Parliament to tackle the issue.

She shared photos of her cat in her Commons office on Twitter, captioned: ‘Great believer in credible deterrence, I’m applying the principle to the lower ministerial corridor mouse problem.’

Official figures show the Commons and Lords spent a total of £64,880 in 2020/21 on pest control, down from £149,339 the previous year.

A UK Parliament spokesman said: ‘Parliament is a safe place to work and eat, with robust food safety and hygiene processes in place.

‘We are committed to maintaining a humane and ethical pest control programme, focussed on preventative measures and, where necessary, use of various control methods.

‘We will, as ever, continue to follow all legislative and regulatory obligations.’
