Escape from Marxachussets: Governor Nominates Her Ex-Girlfriend for Supreme Court

Outrage as Massachusetts' Democrat Governor Maura Healey nominates her EX-GIRLFRIEND for role on state's supreme court

  • The Democrat announced her pick for the highest court on Wednesday
  • The two started dating in 2013, when Haley was running for Attorney General
  • They were no longer together by the time she became governor in 2022

MassachusettsDemocrat governor Maura Healey has nominated her ex-girlfriend to the state's Supreme Court - sparking backlash from critics.

The lawmaker announced her pick for the highest court on Wednesday -Massachusetts Appeals Court Associate Justice Gabrielle Wolohojian, her former live-in partner of several years.

The two started dating publicly in 2013, when Haley was running for Attorney General. They had split by the time she became governor in 2022 but apparently remain amicable.

'It is highly inappropriate for the Governor to nominate to Massachusetts' highest court an individual with whom she had a long-term romantic relationship in the past,' the state's GOP chairwoman Amy Carnevale told CBS News. 'This nomination clearly demonstrates a lack of accountability inherent in one-party rule.'

The Boston Globe's liberal editorial board has also disapproved of the governor's choice, accusing Haley of poor judgment and saying her decision to nominate her ex represents 'just plain awful optics.'

The Globe points out that Haley also nominated someone from her inner circle, Bessie Dewar, to the Supreme Court in December after she had selected her as solicitor when she was Attorney General.

Critics have suggested Healy's appointments could give the impression that she wants her legal hires to make rulings that align with her own politics.

The Globe's editorial board wrote: 'None of us need to know the circumstances of Healey and Wolohojian’s breakup, but it beggars belief to imagine that the judge has no “personal bias”  in favor of her ex.'

There was outrage as the Governor requisitioned and closed this cherished sports center in majority black Roxbury in order to house a surge of illegal immigrants. She was accused of treating the neighborhood like garbage at an angry public meeting.

Following the successful vote, The Department of Elementary and Secondary Education will be taking feedback via email or regular postage for the next 60 days. After that period concludes, the board will vote whether or not to send the recommendations to Healy's desk to sign
