Chickens were revered for centuries before they became dinner- study

New research examines how the chicken went from pedestal to platter, finding that they were initially viewed as exotica, and it was not until centuries later that they started to be seen as dinner.

The human relationship with chicken dates back further than a component of noodle soup or a platter of wings. For centuries, the bird was celebrated and even worshiped, new research suggests. So how did the chicken, the world's most numerous domestic animal, go from pedestal to platter?

The study

As reported in two papers published Monday, one in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences and the other in the journal Antiquity, chickens' transition from exotic and venerated birds to food likely occurred with the rise of the Roman Empire in Europe, where eggs became a widespread stadium snack.

The new findings suggest previous studies, which claimed that chickens were domesticated up to 10,000 years ago in China, Southeast Asia or India, and were present in Europe over 7,000 years ago, were wrong.

Researchers from across Europe examined chicken remains found in more than 600 sites in 89 countries.

They found evidence that chickens were initially viewed as exotica, and it was not until centuries later that they started to be seen on the dinner plate.

According to research, several of the earliest chickens are buried alone and unbutchered. Some were also discovered buried with people – men were often with cockerels and women with hens.

Transition to the dinner table

The first evidence of widespread chicken consumption in Roman-controlled Britain dates to around the first century CE. It is unclear exactly how the shift occurred, according to the research, but it's likely that having chickens around for centuries made humans reevaluate their relationship.

“This comprehensive re-evaluation of chickens firstly demonstrates how wrong our understanding of the time and place of chicken domestication was," according to Prof. Greger Larson from the University of Oxford.

“And, even more excitingly, we show how the arrival of dry rice agriculture acted as a catalyst for both the chicken domestication process and its global dispersal.”

Florida Gov Fires Warning Shot At Drag Show Groomers

Source: https://www.thegatewaypundit.com/2022/06/laws-child-endangerment-desantis-fires-warning-shot-drag-show-groomers/

When it comes to adults sexualizing children, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis does not mess around. After having gone toe-to-toe with Disney over the left’s grooming agenda, and recently passing a monumental bill that protects children from radical sexual perversion in schools, DeSantis is turning his attention to the horrific Drag Queen Story Hour scourge that is sweeping the nation.

Instead of holding the tired line of ‘you do you’, DeSantis said that he intends to use the powers afforded to him under Florida law, including Child Protective Services (CPS), to protect children from exposure to hyper-sexualized Drag Queen performances. And rightfully so. As he pointed out, there is absolutely no place for children at these events.

“I’ve asked my folks to look, we have child protective statutes on the books,” DeSantis clarified during a press conference in Fort Myers Beach on Wednesday. “We have laws against child endangerment.”

DeSantis’ comments come in response to a series of viral online videos showing one of these ‘Drag Queen Story Hour’ events that took place at a 21+ gay bar in Texas last week. Videos from the event, titled ‘Drag the Kids to Pride,’ shockingly show young children participating in the hyper-sexualized performance and handing dollar bills to the adult men as they danced provocatively.

Adding to the horror of it all, the sickening show was presided over by a large pink neon sign that literally said “it’s not gonna lick itself.”

And that’s in red Texas, in places like New York, Drag Queens are paid by the taxpayer to perform at public middle schools for 5-year-olds. And they give hands-on makeup lessons to boot.

America has lost its damn mind.

Fortunately, this kind of thing isn’t going to fly in Florida. At least not on DeSantis’ watch.

DeSantis continued:

“You had these very young kids, and they must have been like 9, 10 years old, at a quote, ‘drag show,’ where they were putting money in the underwear of this. That is totally inappropriate. That is not something that children should be exposed to…

We probably – we may have the ability to deal with that if something like that happens… That was really, really disturbing. We want our kids to be kids. They want to have normal environment. Part of the reason why we fought the fight with parents rights in education is because there’s a movement to inject these things like gender ideology in elementary schools even.

…So we’re going to look to see what could be done under existing statutes…It used to be kids would be off-limits. Used to be everybody agreed with that. Now it just seems like there’s a concerted effort to be exposing kids more and more to things that are not age appropriate.”

It’s about time our elected leaders put their foot down on this issue, saying not in this state. Especially considering that there are already laws on the books to prevent this sickening scenario from taking place. What happened last week in Texas should be (and is already in many ways) illegal. The fact that Dallas Police stood by outside the bar as children were subjected to that performance is truly shocking.

Thankfully, Florida isn’t governed by a fake, sellout, World Economic Forum stooge RINO like Texas is – looking at you Greg Abbott. DeSantis’ stand on these issues is a much-needed breath of fresh air in a time when the majority of Republican elected officials are AWOL (or complicit) in the worst way.

Ukraine Needs Counter-Battery Artillery & Ammunition to Counter Russian Artillery

Battle for the Donbas: Russia beats back Ukrainian counter-attacks in Severodonetsk with heavy artillery - as Ukraine armed forces chief admits they are facing 'catastrophic' lack of munitions

  • Momentum swung back in favour of Russia last night as Putin's forces retook most of the city Severodonetsk
  • Ukrainian forces are still managing to hold their positions on the outskirts of the city, defence officials said
  • But Putin's forces are seizing ground metre-by-metre, advancing slowly behind heavy artillery bombardment
  • Ukraine's armed forces are running low on artillery ammo and implored West to send more heavy weapons

Momentum in the battle for the Donbas swung back in favour of Russia last night after Putin's forces managed to retake most of Severodonetsk in the Luhansk region.

Ukrainian forces are still managing to hold their positions on the outskirts of the city, officials said, but are subject to almost round-the-clock bombardments as Russian troops employ a WWI-style approach of seizing ground metre-by-metre behind heavy artillery strikes.

The industrial hub, along with its smaller twin Lysychansk on the opposite bank of the Siversky Donets river, represents the last Ukrainian-controlled part of Luhansk province, which Russia is determined to seize as one of its principal war objectives.

As such, the two urban centres have endured bitter fighting in recent weeks as Ukraine's armed forces attempt to hold off an all-out Russian offensive.

Ukraine's Security Council Secretary Oleksy Danilov said on Thursday the situation in Severodonetsk was 'extremely complicated' and Russian forces were focusing all of their might in the area.

'[The Russian army] don't spare their people, they're just sending men like cannon fodder... they are shelling our military day and night,' Danilov said, while Ukrainian Defence Ministry spokesperson Oleksandr Motuzyanyk declared: 'Russia's strategic goal is the complete destruction of Ukraine... They want to destroy Ukrainian statehood and install a government it can control here.'

Russia shelled more than 20 towns in Donetsk and Luhansk on Thursday, destroying or damaging 49 homes, several manufacturing plants, farm buildings and a rail station. Two civilians were killed, according to officials.

Meanwhile, commander of Ukraine's Svoboda National Guard Battalion Petro Kusyk said his men were drawing the Russians into street fighting in Severodonetsk to neutralise their artillery advantage.

'Yesterday was successful for us - we launched a counteroffensive and in some areas we managed to push them back one or two blocks. In others they pushed us back, but just by a building or two,' he said in a televised interview.

But Kusyk admitted his forces were suffering from a 'catastrophic' lack of counter-battery artillery to fire back at Russia's guns, and said that getting such weapons would transform the battlefield.

Ukraine's deputy head of military intelligence Vadym Skibitsky echoed Kusyk's statement and warned that Ukrainian's armed forces are running low on munitions for the artillery pieces they already have.

He told the Guardian that Western allies must deliver more artillery and long-range missiles to keep Ukraine in the fight.

'Everything now depends on what [the West] gives us... Ukraine has one artillery piece to 10 to 15 Russian artillery pieces - we have almost used up all of our ammunition and are now using 155-calibre Nato standard shells.'

The Coconuts Recipe Corner: How to make Swedish Meatballs

How to make Swedish Meatballs ,  Homemade Ikea Meatballs

Juicy flavour-packed meatballs in that classic rich and creamy Swedish meatball sauce.
Such a great comforting dinner served with mashed potato and of course some lingonberry jam (although I've got some other suggestions if you can't find it).

Close up of Swedish meatballs and gravy in a pan topped with parsley

The classic Swedish meatballs - essential to get through a shopping trip to Ikea. Followed by some of that Daim cake that stares at us from the refrigerator whilst we're queuing up for our meatballs until we give in an put it on our tray.

My question to you is:

Do you eat your meatballs before or after the 3-hour trek around the Ikea maze?

I prefer to eat beforehand. I feel I need the energy to get through it all. Then we can always top up with a suspiciously cheap hot dog or ice cream at the end.

What do we need?

Ingredients for Swedish meatballs on a wooden table

A quick note on a couple of the ingredients:

Mince - we use a mixture of beef and pork mince for these meatballs. Don't be tempted to use lean mince. I go with 20% fat beef mince and 10% fat pork mince for the juiciest meatballs.

Allspice - be sure to include this, it's vital for that classic taste.

Ingredient swaps

  • Swap the lingonberry jam for redcurrant jam or cranberry sauce.
  • Swap the mashed potato for pasta or roast potatoes
  • Swedish meatballs on top of mashed potatoes in a bowl with lingonberry jam and broccoli

To Serve:

INSTRUCTIONS

  • First make the meatballs. Place the beef mince, pork mince, diced onion, garlic, breadcrumbs, egg, milk, salt, black pepper, white pepper and allspice in a bowl.
  • Mix it altogether with your hands, then form into 18-22 meatballs.
  • Heat 1tbsp of the oil in a large frying pan (skillet) over a medium-high heat until hot.
  • Add half of the meatballs to the pan, and fry, turning occasionally, until browned all over. Transfer the meatballs to a tray.
  • Add the remaining oil to the pan and cook the second batch of meatballs in the same way, then transfer to the tray with the other meatballs.
  • Place the tray in the oven on low (150C/300F) to finish cooking through while you make the sauce (they only need 5 or 6 minutes).
  • Now start on the sauce. Add the butter to the pan that you cooked the meatballs in. Turn the heat down to medium and melt the butter.
  • Add the flour and whisk it into the butter to form a roux (thick paste).
  • Add the beef stock a splash at a time, whilst stirring with the whisk, until fully combined with the butter-flour mixture and no lumps remain.
  • Stir in the vegetable stock and bring to the boil.
  • Add the cream, soy sauce, Worcestershire sauce, mustard and salt and stir together to combine.
  • Add the meatballs back to the pan along with any resting liquid from the tray.
  • Stir together to coat the meatballs in the sauce and cook for a further 3-4 minutes, then serve.
  • I like to serve my meatballs with creamy mashed potato, lingonberry jam and green veggies, all topped off with a sprinkling of fresh parsley and black pepper.
