How Can Ukranian Drones Keep Dropping Grenades Into Open Russian Tank Hatches?

How Can Ukrainian Drones Keep Dropping Grenades Into Open Tank Hatches?

Shadow grenade drop hatchd
SHADOW UNIT

Small drones carry small warheads, so unless they can hit a tank in exactly the right spot they may barely scratch the armored exterior. But often there is an easy way. In a video from Ukraine’s Shadow Division posted on May 8th, a drone hovers above an abandoned Russian T-90M tank and, with exquisite care, drops an American M67 hand grenade through an open hatch.

A light puff of smoke is followed by thicker smoke. The fire takes hold and soon the tank is ablaze, with a series of explosions as the stowed ammunition and smoke grenades cook off in the heat. Before long, Russia’s most advanced tank, valued at over $4m is a burning wreck, thanks to a $50 grenade from a $2,000 drone. The M67 is a fragmentation weapon, useless against the outside of a tank, but from the inside its six ounces of explosive is enough to destroy one.

The next day Shadow Division posted another such wrecking job on another T-90M on May 9th . Many, many such videos showing Russian tanks destroyed by grenade drops through open hatches. Which leads to the question: “Why don’t Russian tank crews simply close the hatches when they leave?”

Russian Tanks’ Deadly Design Feature

The simple answer is that leaving hatches open is standard practice. The hatches are extremely heavy. They need to be protected to the same degree as the rest of the tank roof, which means at least two inches of armor plating weighing a hundred pounds or more. Some tank hatches are sprung to make opening easier, and the IDF Merkava even has power-assisted hatches, but Russia uses simpler technology. So closing a tank hatch takes time and effort. And anyone baling out of a Russian tank is likely to be in a hurry.

Russian tanks have a design trade-off which has the ammunition carousel for the automatic loader sharing space with the crew. This means that the crew is three rather than the four needed in most Western tanks, but it also means that any penetrating hit is likely to set off the stored ammunition, usually a with huge explosion and ‘turret toss,’ flinging the turret high into the air, killing the occupants instantly.

If the tank strikes a mine, or is hit by a missile or FPV drone, and is immobilized, the commander will order the crew to abandon it. A few seconds mean the difference between getting away to a safe distance when the tank explodes, or being at ground zero for a massive fireball. Crews understandably get out and away as fast as they can, leaving hatches open behind them.

An added issue is the presence of multiple FPV drones which often hunt down surviving crew members. As the old joke goes, when a bear is chasing your party, you do not need to be faster than the bear, just faster than the slowest member of the party.

Mosquito Screens For Drones

Leaving hatches open is costing the Russians a fortune in destroyed equipment. So what would happen if crews were compelled to shut tank hatches on pain of serious penalty?

Even if some tankers managed to remember the order in the heat of battle, and decided to risk their lives carrying it out, each tank had three crewmembers, each escaping through their own hatch. If compliance with the order was 50%, then the chance of all three hatches being shut would be 50% x 50% x 50% or 12.5% , which is just one in eight. Even if compliance was 80%, around half the abandoned tanks would have one or more hatches left open.

In the case of the T-90M, it looks like two of the three hatches were closed. But the commander’s hatch was not. It only takes one open hatch to drop a grenade through.

A simple solution is a lightweight wire mesh screen above the hatch, something like a screen door for keeping out insects and with the same function of allowing fresh air in while keeping nuisances out and easy to open and close. This approach is shown in another Shadow Unit T-90M demolition video, this one from May 6th. Two hinged screens, seemingly made from sections from chain link fence, protect the gunner’s and commander’s hatches. However, as well as leaving the hatch open, the commander also left his hatch cover open, and again a single M67 grenade sends $4m of Russian hardware to a fiery end.

In yet another example seen on May 9th both top hatches and their mesh screens were left open in an abandoned T-90M. The result is inevitable.

Persistence Always Pays Off

The screen door approach does not give complete protection, just temporary respite. Another video, this one from April 10thshows a Russian tank with a wire mesh over the commander’s hatch. On closer inspection the mesh has a large circular hole blown in it, likely from a previous grenade. This allows a Shadow unit drone to drop the usual M67 through the opening and finish another Russian tank.

The popular roof screens over Russian tanks should also stop any grenades dropped from above, but they can only survive a few hits. When there is no jamming or defensive fire, drone operators can keep coming back and dropping as many bombs as needed to finish the job.

For example a video from February shows a Russian tank protected by a roof screen made of explosive reactive armor (ERA) blocks, a design now installed at the factory for new Russian tanks. A very persistent drone operator keeps returning to the attack, dropping a variety of different munitions, blasting away the roof screen one piece at a time. After eight attempts the way to the hatch is clear, and, just as it is getting dark, two more drops through the open hatch with what look like RGT 27S2 thermobaric grenades finally ignite and destroy the tank.

There is a similar example from May 10th, a video in which we only see the final act but the roof screen above the commander’s hatch has been systematically destroyed and a small Ukrainian-made drone bomb produces a spectacular fireball.

Just as bank robbers can drill their way into any vault given sufficient time undisturbed, no add-on roof protection will work against precise, repeated bombing.

Russian tank crews may also feel that shutting the hatches will not help their vehicles survive for long. After nightfall. Because that is when Ukraine’s heavy Baba Yaga drones comes out. These are far larger than the quadcopters that fly by day, and can drop mortar bombs, RPG warheads and even anti-tank mines, destroying tanks whether their hatches are left open or closed.

Meanwhile, the Shadow Division, and many others like it, continue to destroy high-end Russian armor on a daily basis.

Pro-Hamas Hunger Strikers Complain They Are Starving

Anti-Israel protestors at Princeton University are being teased online after screaming about the pains of the hunger strike they've embarked upon.

One young woman, in a clip circulating online, yells into a megaphone that she and her peers are 'starving.'

'I am quite literally shaking right now, as you can see,' the masked protester on the Ivy League campus says.

The clip was mocked online by countless social media users who pointed out the absurdity of the students complaining about their condition on a self-imposed hunger strike.

The strike is nearing its seven-day mark.

As has been the case at many prestigious US schools, students at Princeton erected last month a Gaza solidarity encampment

The criminal protestors were charged for setting up more than a dozen tents and trespassing into an academic building.

The speaker went on to describe the current self-imposed symptoms the group on strike is experiencing: 'We are both hot and cold at the same time.

'We are all immunocompromised and the university would love to continue physically weakening us' she proclaimed.

The student then let everyone know that it's her birthday.

Lawrence Hamm (center) of Montclair, who was one of 210 students who participated in the takeover of Nassau Hall at Princeton University on April 14, 1978, speaks with Princeton University students and community members participating in a hunger strike, which started last Friday, inside the Gaza Solidarity Encampment behind Nassau Hall

Social media users were not impressed by the pleas of the students on the self-imposed hunger strike.

'Poor kid. No one told her that a possible side effect of a hunger strike was being hungry,' user Mike Runner wrote on X.

'Considering that they’re at Princeton, you’d think they’d know that a hunger strike would cause….hunger,' fellow X user odloceangirl noted.

Others took to offering suggestions on how the university should handle the strike.

'The university should donate their meal cards to actual hungry homeless people who would love a hot meal,' TV anchor Jessamyn Dodd wrote.

The administrations of many schools across the US have begun stepping up efforts to shut down the student protestors illegally camped on various lawns

Americans have long since grown tired of the outrageous demonstrations against Israel taking place on college campuses across the country.

In a poll, about six-in-ten said students should be kicked out of schools for making anti-Semitic comments, and about half said anti-Israel protestors should lose out on student loan forgiveness opportunities.

As the academic school year draws to a close, administrations have gotten serious about shutting their radical students down.

Hundreds of students at Columbia University were arrested last week.

Harvard University's interim president, Alan Garber, warned students that those in an encampment in Harvard Yard could face 'involuntary leave.'

They would not be allowed on campus, could lose their student housing and might not be able to take exams.

At the University of California, San Diego, police cleared an encampment and arrested more than 64 people.

The University of California, Los Angeles, moved classes online and dismantled an encampment last week, resulting in 44 arrests.

RFK had a Parasitic Brain Worm that Ate Part of his Brain

Robert F. Kennedy Jr. had a parasitic worm that ate part of his brain

Robert F. Kennedy Jr. described over a decade ago how a worm ate part of his brain and caused short term memory loss.

The 2024 longshot independent presidential candidate revealed the information during a 2012 divorce deposition unearthed by The New York Times and published on Wednesday.

At first, doctors thought RFK Jr.'s memory loss and mental fogginess was the result of a brain tumor after a dark spot showed up on his brain scans.

While packing for a surgery at Duke University Medical Center in 2010, Kennedy received a call from a doctor at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital who believed the symptoms were a result of a dead parasite in his head.

Kennedy said at the deposition that the doctor believed the abnormality on his scans 'was caused by a worm that got into my brain and ate a portion of it and then died.'

The revelations were part of a 2012 deposition during divorce proceedings from Mary Richardson (left) where Kennedy claimed his earning power diminished due to cognitive struggles

At the time of revealing this information in a deposition, RFK Jr. was going through divorce proceedings with Mary Richardson and was arguing that his earning power was diminished due to cognitive struggles.

Kennedy was married to Richardson from 1994 to 2012. He is now now married to actress Cheryl Hines and running for president.

Kennedy, 70, prides himself on his athleticism and has on several occasions displayed his physical fitness online by posting shirtless videos of himself showing off his six pack abs and doing push ups and bench pressing.

While 70-years-old, RFK Jr. has a general 'youth' advantage over the two frontrunner candidates President Joe Biden, 81, and former President Donald Trump, 77.

Biden in 2020 was the oldest person ever elected president – he beat Trump who set that record just four years prior.

RFK Jr. was running in the Democratic primary last year, but he switched tactics in October when he filed to run in November on an independent ticket instead.

He announced earlier this year that Nicole Shanahan, a 38-year-old attorney and Silicon Valley businesswoman, would join his ticket as his vice presidential candidate.

Kennedy insists he is not in the race to serve as spoiler for either Biden or Trump and instead thinks he has a real chance of becoming the first third-party candidate to clinch the White House. He has so far secured a place on the November ballots in Utah, Michigan and Hawaii. His campaign also claims he is on the ballot in California and Delaware.

Around 1,000 Americans are hospitalized each year with parasitic brain infections - the vast majority of whom imported the infection from a foreign country.

One in six cases are in people with no travel history.

The most common form of infection is caused by a microscopic worm that lays its eggs in undercooked pork.

Once eaten, these eggs hatch inside the digestive system and the larvae travel through the bloodstream to other parts of the body, where they cause cysts to form.

These cysts trigger inflammation and, if they reach the brain, symptoms such as headaches, seizures, personality changes, and mental impairment.

Adult worms can live in people for decades and continue to lay eggs that cause health problems for the sufferer.

https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-13395605/robert-f-kennedy-jr-temporary-memory-loss-brain-worm.html

These infections are most common in rural areas of developing countries, as well as where there are poor hygiene practices.

Infections with parasitic worms are relatively common in tropical and sub-tropical areas, including parts of Africa (especially sub-Saharan Africa), Asia and South America.

At least 600 million people worldwide are at risk of infection with parasitic worms.

The risk is highest in China, Korea, and Vietnam where the worms are endemic.

RFK “traveled extensively in Africa, South America and Asia” as part of his work as an environmental advocate and said he contracted a parasite in one of those trips.

Democrat Congressman Indicted for Supporting Border Security

Trump defends indicted Democrat Texas congressman: Trump claims FBI was ordered to 'take out' Henry Cuellar because he was tough on border security

  • Cuellar has been a pro-life and pro-border security Democrat

Former President Donald Trump has issued a defense of Democratic Congressman Henry Cuellar after he and his wife were indicted.

Cuellar, who has been in office since 2005, is a pro-life and pro-border security Democrat.

'Biden just Indicted Henry Cuellar because the Respected Democrat Congressman wouldn’t play Crooked Joe’s Open Border game,' Trump wrote on Truth Social. 'He was for Border Control, so they said, “Let’s use the FBI and DOJ to take him out!” This is the way they operate. They’re a bunch of D.C. Thugs.'

The pair were released on $100,000 bond on Friday. If convicted, they could each spend the rest of their lives behind bars.

Cuellar is the third member of Congress to be indicted this congressional term, following Rep. George Santos, R-N.Y., and Sen. Bob Menendez, D-N.J.

Santos was ousted in December but Menendez remains in the Senate, though he no longer serves as Foreign Relations chairman.

House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries declined to call on Cuellar to resign.

Cuellar is “'entitled to his day in court and the presumption of innocence throughout the legal process,' said Jeffries.'

The couple faces up to 204 years in prison if convicted on all counts.

The Texas Democrat's home was raided by the FBI in January 2022 in hopes of tilting the upcoming primary election against him.

Cuellar insisted he and his wife were innocent in response to the news.

'I want to be clear that both my wife and I are innocent of these allegations.'

'The actions I took in Congress were consistent with the actions of many of my colleagues and in the interest of the American people,' he went on.

The embattled congressman said he plans to continue his campaign for reelection despite the indictment.

Cuellar said he and his wife tried to meet with prosecutors and they 'refused to discuss the case or hear our side.'

'Imelda and I have been married for 32 years. On top of being an amazing wife and mother, she's an accomplished businesswoman with two degrees. She spent her career working with banking, tax and consulting. The allegation that she is anything but qualified and hard-working is both wrong and offensive.'

Cuellar said at the time of the raid he was cooperating with law enforcement and he did not believe he was the target of the investigation. It is not yet clear if the indictment will be related to that investigation.

The nine-term Democrat is a past co-chair of the Congressional Azerbaijan Caucus, a group dedicated to furthering relations with the oil-rich nation on the Caspian Sea.

Congressman Henry Cuellar is expected to be indicted by the Department of Justice on Friday afternoon, according to multiple reports.

In that role, Cuellar is known to have met repeatedly with Azerbaijan officials, including the country's ambassador to the US, Elin Suleymanov.

Azerbaijan has been harshly criticized in the past for bribing foreign officials and diplomats to secure its foreign policy aims and legitimize dubious election results.

The practice is so common in the country that it is known there as 'caviar diplomacy,' but it is unclear whether the FBI is investigating any similar allegations in relation to Cuellar.

Since 2004, Cuellar has represented a district that extends from the U.S. border with Mexico near McAllen to Laredo, and north to San Antonio's eastern outskirts.

Cuellar's district includes hundreds of miles of southern border along the Rio Grande River separating Texas and Mexico – it also stretches into the state to include parts of San Antonio

The moderate Democrat had a seat on the powerful House Appropriations Committee.

Cuellar, who represents much of the Rio Grande Valley in Texas, has been a vocal critic of President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris for their handling of a surge of illegal crossings at the border.

The married couple from Laredo, Texas pleaded not guilty and were released on $100,000 bail each.

While the trial is scheduled to begin this summer, it's likely that pre-trial legal disputes over the case will delay the start by months – and could even result in dismissal.

Cuellar, one of the few remaining moderate Democrats in the U.S. House of Representatives, has already stepped down from his assignment on the House Appropriations Committee amid the active criminal case proceedings.

Trump on Sunday stepped in to defend Cuellar, calling the pro-life lawmaker a 'respected Democrat congressman.'

In the Truth Social post on Sunday, Trump accused Biden's DOJ of targeting Cuellar because he has more moderate or conservative views on border security.

'They're a bunch of D.C. Thugs, and at some point they will be paying a very big price for what they have done to our Country,' wrote the former president.

  • 'Members should take care of their own district before taking failed ideas to South Texas'

Texas Democrat Rep. Henry Cuellar ripped his colleague Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez for campaigning for his primary challenger, calling her a 'far-left celebrity' who should take care of her own district.

Ocasio-Cortez, N.Y., headed to Texas to campaign for progressive House candidate Jessica Cisneros, a Laredo immigration attorney who is challenging Cuellar.

'This election is taking place in the 28th Congressional District of Texas- not New York City,' Cuellar said in a statement to DailyMail.com.

'The voters will decide this election, not far left celebrities who stand for defunding the police, open borders, eliminating oil & gas jobs, and raising taxes on hard working Texans,' he continued.

'Members should take care of their own district before taking failed ideas to South Texas.'

Ocasio-Cortez's campaign called Cuellar an 'anti-choice Democrat' and tied him to Donald Trump in a campaign email.

Cuellar was the only Democrat to buck his party and vote against a reproductive rights bill that passed the House. The bill, which stalled in the Senate, would have banned a wide range of restrictions commonly used in red states.

'It’s called conscience, ' he said. 'I am a Catholic, and I do believe in rights, right to life, and it’s just a matter of conscience, sometimes people vote because of politics, they vote just because it's a Democratic or Republican issue, for me it’s just a matter of conscience.'

Cuellar, the last anti-choice 'Democrat' in the House once had a 70% voting record of siding with Donald Trump.

The Texas Democrat has also been a vociferous critic of President Biden's immigration policies.

'There is an ongoing investigation that will show there was no wrongdoing on my part,' Cuellar said.

'As an attorney, I know firsthand that the legal system is a pillar of our democracy.'

'Let me be clear: I'm running for re-election and I intend to win,' Cuellar added.

'I pride myself on being your congressman and always doing things honestly ethically and in the right way,' the congressman said. 'Nothing can distract me from being laser-focused on getting the job done for you and south Texas the way I always have.'

Jose Sanz, Cuellar's former staffer who is now running against him in the South Texas district, was arrested on April 12, 2021 for assault in an incident where he was accused of throwing a chair at his 21-year-old sister. His mugshot is seen above

Cuellar is one of the last pro-life Democrats in Congress and has been critical of President Biden's border policies.

In January 2022 just ahead of his last primary, against Jessica, the FBI raided Cuellar's home and office in Laredo, hauling out a computer and bags filled with other personal items. But no charges or arrests were filed in that case.
