Don Lemon’s lame explanation

After facing serious blowback over his guffawing while two guests mocked President Trump’s “boomer rube,” southern-accented base, Don Lemon took a moment from his show offer up this genuinely lame explanation.

Sure, Jan.  That clears it right up.
So, you weren’t laughing at those “boomer rubes” who talk with a Southern accent and don’t know nothin’ ‘bout spelling or “lines on maps.” No. You were just laughing at a joke about those “boomer rubes” who talk with a Southern accent and don’t know nothin’ ’bout spelling or “lines on maps.”
That is one hell of a lame explanation, Donnie.
Don’t you hate it when your “damage control” causes more damage?
But what makes his lame explanation even more revealing is his admission that he “didn’t catch everything” his guest were saying.
Isn’t Lame Explanation Lemon here admitting that his ever-increasing guffaws, the hanky to wipe away his tears, the doubling over in uncontrolled fits of laughter – all of it – was just pretend-laughing?
How does that make this better?
Keep in mind, Don Lemon’s show is considered part of CNN’s “straight news” line-up. Just thinking about that makes me double over in laughter while wiping away a tear.
But what really pushed his lame explanation into “I don’t believe you” territory was his idiotic “ask anyone who knows me, they’ll tell you.” Whenever someone resorts to offering unknown, unnamed “character references” to explain away his bad behavior, I dismiss everything that comes after it.
I also rolled my eyes when Don added “this is personally important to me.”
Yeah, I’m sure it is, Donnie. But only in the “If I don’t offer even some kind of lame explanation, I’m going to lose my job” kind of way.
If I had to guess, this embarrassing clip got little Lemon is a bit of hot water. And what can I say? I enjoy a little lemon in hot water.
See, ordinarily, the best his Saturday night program can do by way of viewers is a few hundred thousand people.  But thanks in large part to President Trump tweeting out that video, this shameful clip has been seen by tens of millions of people (over 11 million from Trump’s tweet alone).
And that isn’t the kind of exposure CNN wants.
Sure, pretty much all of the folks at CNN feel the same way about us that Donnie and his guests do.  But they prefer it not be so, well, in your face.
Don’s sin was saying the quiet parts out loud — or laughing the quiet parts out loud as the case may be.
Which explains this bit of damage control last night.
I’m sure CNN is doubly angry that the Trump campaign has already incorporated those 80-seconds of shame into a campaign ad:
Just conjecture on my part, but I’m guessing Trump hater Jeff Zucker wasn’t at all pleased that the Trump campaign is capitalizing on Don Lemon and his asshole guests.
But rather than simply fall on his sword and admit that it was not appropriate to mock his fellow Americans, the best Don Lemon could do was this lame explanation.
Which leads me to suspect that while he may or may not believe Trump supporters are stupid,  Don Lemon definitely believes his own audience is as dumb as a box of rocks.
