Seattle Crime: Burglar Chugs Gasoline When Arrested

Burglary suspect Christopher M. Abbott is caught chugging GASOLINE out of a can after 'breaking into family home' in Seattle

  • Police were called by frightened 17-year-old to the upmarket Seattle home
  • Expecting a burglary they found the suspect in the garage where he had locked himself into a car with a hammer and a gas canister

Police responding to a reported burglary at an upmarket Seattle home were baffled to find the suspect swigging gasoline from a locked car in the garage.

Officers rushed to the house in 5th Avenue Southwest after a 17-year-old girl reported seeing a man with a wooden stick trying to break in.

They forced open the door after hearing loud banging which led them to the garage where they found the suspect sitting in the driver’s seat of the Toyota saloon with a hammer in his lap and a gasoline cannister in his hands.

Police bodycam footage shows officers pointing a gun and yelling ‘Hey get your hands up now!’ at the man, since identified as Christopher M Abbott, 40.

But instead he put the nozzle in his mouth and took a deep gulp from the plastic container.

‘Open the door!’ they yelled, shining a torch into the car and spotting the hammer in his lap.

‘Don’t do it!’ Abbott shouted at them, moving his canister to one side as one officer reached for a baton.

‘I didn’t want no problems, don’t bust the windows,’ he told them.

‘Open the door or we’ll bust it open!’ insisted one of the officers, before raising his baton and smashing the window.

‘What the…?’ one officer exclaimed, as Abbott took a last deep draught of the gasoline before police wrestled the cannister off him and hauled him out of the car.

The bizarre footage ends with Abbott being spread-eagled on the floor and cuffed as he was arrested.

The 17-year-old girl was found safe, hiding on the second floor.

Viewers reacted with astonishment when the footage was posted on social media with one suggesting it ‘pretty crazy even for Seattle standards’.

But there have been high profile cases of people addicted to gasoline which experts say can fuel a ‘high’ lasting several hours.

A teenage girl called Shannon showcased her addiction on TLC'S My Strange Addiction in 2012, telling the program: 'Even though it hurts me, it makes me feel good.’

And in 2011 China Daily reported on a man who had drunk gasoline for 42 years, calculating he had put away 1.5 tons during the course of his habit.

Stonecutter Chen Dejun, 71, of Chongquin told the publication he tried to cure a cough and chest pain with kerosene but became hooked after switching to gasoline.

Northpoint Recovery in Meridian, Idaho, has treated patients for gasoline addiction and warn that it causes nerve and brain damage in users.

‘Some of these permanent effects include cerebellar damage, cranial nerve damage, peripheral neuropathy, and bone marrow damage,’ their website advises.

‘It surprises most people to learn that a gasoline abuse and addiction is possible,’ they add, ‘but this is one type of abuse that has been rising in popularity.’

Abbott was treated by paramedics and later booked into King County Jail for residential burglary.

He is due in court on August 31.
