Israel News: Terrorist Attacks

Families weep for the victims of Holocaust Day terror attack in Israeli synagogue: Funeral is held for 14-year-old boy gunned down by Palestinian terrorist

  • Friday's shooting was outside a synagogue in Jerusalem on the Jewish sabbath
  • Gun rampage left seven Israelis dead and three wounded

Funerals have been held in Israel for the victims of the Holocaust Day terror attack at a synagogue in east Jerusalem.

Friday's shooting, outside a synagogue in east Jerusalem on the Jewish sabbath, left seven Israelis dead and three wounded before the gunman was killed by police. It was the deadliest attack on Israelis in 15 years.

Authorities published the names of four of the victims. They included 14-year-old Asher Natan; Eli Mizrahi, 48, and his wife Natali, 45; and Rafael Ben Eliyahu, 56. Funerals for some victims were scheduled Saturday night.

Mourners lit memorial candles near the synagogue on Saturday evening, and in a sign of the charged atmosphere, a crowd assaulted an Israeli TV crew that came to the area, chanting 'leftists go home.'

In response to the shooting, Israeli police beefed up activities throughout east Jerusalem and said they had arrested 42 people, including family members, who were connected to the shooter.

It comes as  Benjamin Netanyahu on Saturday announced a series of punitive steps against the Palestinians, including plans to beef up Jewish settlements in the West Bank, in response to a pair of shooting attacks that killed seven Israelis and wounded five others.

Netanyahu's Security Cabinet approved the measures in the wake of a pair of shootings that included a terrorist attack outside an east Jerusalem synagogue on Friday night in which seven people were killed.

Netanyahu's office said the Security Cabinet agreed to seal off the attacker's home immediately ahead of its demolition. It also plans to cancel social security benefits for the families of attackers, make it easier for Israelis to get gun licenses and step up efforts to collect illegal weapons.

The announcement said that in response to public Palestinian celebrations over the attack, Israel would take new steps to 'strengthen the settlements' this week. It gave no further details.

Early Sunday, the Israeli military said that security guards in the West Bank settlement of Kedumim had shot a Palestinian who was armed with a handgun and released a photo of the weapon. There were no further details on the incident or the attacker's condition.

Yesterday, a 13-year-old Palestinian boy opened fire elsewhere in east Jerusalem, wounding an Israeli man and his son, ages 47 and 23, paramedics said. Both were fully conscious and in moderate to serious condition in the hospital, the medics added.

As police rushed to the scene, two passers-by with licensed weapons shot and overpowered the 13-year-old attacker, police said. Police confiscated his handgun and took the wounded teen to a hospital.

Both Palestinian attackers behind the shootings on Friday and Saturday came from east Jerusalem.

Palestinian residents of east Jerusalem hold permanent residency status, allowing them to work and move freely throughout Israel.

Israel's minister of national security, Itamar Ben-Gvir, promises to take stronger action against the Palestinians.

Overhauling Israel's justice system, including the attorney general's office, has been at the top of the agenda of the new government, due to unelected judges and jurists having overwhelming powers.

Ella Sakovich, an aunt of Natali Mizrahi, said that her niece had been celebrating the Jewish sabbath with her husband and his father when they heard gunfire outside on Friday night.

'While eating, she and her husband wanted to help and went out of the house to treat the wounded; they shot both of them,' Ms Sakovich said in a statement released by Hadassah Hospital, where Natali Mizrahi worked serving food to patients.

A Palestinian gunman killed at least seven people and wounded three others in a synagogue on the outskirts of Jerusalem on Friday in an attack that heightened fears of a spiral in violence, a day after the deadliest Israeli raid in the West Bank in years. Police said the gunman arrived at around 8.15 p.m. and opened fire, hitting a number of people before he was killed by police. TV footage showed several victims lying in the road outside the synagogue being tended to by emergency workers.

'I heard a lot of bullets,' Matanel Almalem, an 18-year-old student who lives near the synagogue, told AFP. Israel's extreme-right National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir attended the scene shortly after, an AFP photographer reported. Police were dismantling a white vehicle believed to have belonged to the shooter. There was no initial claim of responsibility for the attack, which took place on International Holocaust Remembrance Day, but a spokesman for the Islamist movement Hamas said the attack was connected with the Jenin raid.

'This operation is a response to the crime conducted by the occupation in Jenin and a natural response to the occupation criminal actions,' Hamas spokesman Hazem Qassem said. The smaller militant group Islamic Jihad also praised the attack without claiming responsibility. The United States meanwhile condemned the 'absolutely horrific' attack. 'Our commitment to Israel's security remains ironclad, and we are in direct touch with our Israeli partners,' State Department spokesman Vedant Patel told reporters. Just hours earlier, Washington had urged 'de-escalation' over the West Bank violence and Gaza rocket fire. Palestinian officials said CIA director William Burns, who was visiting Israel and the West Bank on a trip arranged before the latest violence, would meet Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas on Saturday. No comment was immediately available from U.S. officials in Jerusalem. British Foreign Secretary James Cleverly described the attack as 'appalling', adding that Britain 'stands with our Israeli friends.' Palestinians had earlier marched in anger as they buried the last of 10 people killed by Israeli fire on Thursday, but the likelihood of a major conflagration had appeared to ebb after the deadliest Israeli raid in two decades. Scuffles between Israeli forces and Palestinian protesters erupted after the funeral for a 22-year-old Palestinian north of Jerusalem and elsewhere in the occupied West Bank, but calm prevailed in the contested capital and in the blockaded Gaza Strip. In the streets of the town called al-Ram, masked Palestinians threw stones and set off fireworks at Israeli police, who responded with tear gas. But the Palestinian rockets and Israeli air strikes seemed limited to prevent growing into a full-blown war. Israel and Hamas have fought four wars and several smaller skirmishes since the militant group seized power in Gaza from rival Palestinian forces in 2007. The Palestinians' rockets were fired toward southern Israel, while Israel's non-lethal air strikes were on targets in Gaza, such as training camps and an underground rocket-manufacturing site. Israeli defense minister Yoav Gallant claimed the military dealt a 'tough blow' to Palestinian militants in Gaza and said the army was preparing to strike 'high-quality targets... until peace is restored to the citizens of Israel.'
