What’s cooking today: Cheesy samp & beans bake

By Tony Jackman

Samp and beans were transformed into a proper cowboy dish this weekend down on the farm. It can be a filling supper in its own right, or a side dish for a winter braai.

It’s best to start this the night before you need to cook it, to soften the samp and beans.

(Serves 4 as a main meal, more as a side dish)

Ingredients

350 g samp

150 g dried sugar beans

6-8 rashers of streaky bacon, diced

2 medium onions, chopped

3 garlic cloves, finely chopped

2 Tbsp butter

1 ½ cups sweetcorn kernels (frozen is fine)

100 g roasted and salted peanuts (just buy a packet of the commercial variety)

850 ml cheese sauce

Grated Cheddar, Parmesan and breadcrumbs for the topping

1 Tbsp picked thyme leaves or 1 tsp dried thyme

½ tsp Cayenne pepper

Salt and white pepper to taste

Water

For the cheese sauce:

4 Tbsp butter

2 heaped Tbsp flour

600 ml full cream milk

250 g grated Cheddar cheese

Salt

1 bay leaf

Method

Pour the samp and beans into a large bowl and pour water over to cover. Leave them to soak overnight, or at least for five or six hours.

Drain and pour fresh water in to cover, bring to a boil and cook for an hour. Pour into a large colander to drain again while you prepare the other ingredients for the bake.

Make a cheese sauce: don’t worry about the exact quantity, just make plenty.

For the béchamel, heat the milk with a bay leaf and a little salt until it is about to boil, then turn off the heat. Remove the bay leaf. Melt 4 Tbsp butter in a saucepan, then stir in the flour off the heat until it is smooth, to make a roux. On a low heat, add the heated milk a little at a time to the roux, while stirring. Cook gently, stirring all the while, for about 15 minutes, then stir in the grated cheese. Keep aside.

Dice the bacon and cook in a lightly oiled pan until crisp on all sides.

Melt 2 Tbsp butter in a large pan big enough to hold all the onions and the drained samp and other ingredients. Add the chopped onions and garlic. Sauté on a medium heat, stirring, until the onions soften. Add the thyme leaves and cook for another minute or two. Add the cooked bacon and sweetcorn kernels and cook for 3 minutes more, stirring (the sweetcorn will continue cooking while it bakes later). Stir in the peanuts, and season to taste with salt and pepper and a little Cayenne pepper.

Pour the cheese sauce in, stir well, then pour it all into a greased oven dish. Sprinkle lots of grated Cheddar over the top, then breadcrumbs, then Parmesan, and bake in a preheated 200℃ oven for about half an hour or until the top is nicely browned.

Chaos at Afghanistan's Kabul airport as Taliban take over country

All U.S. evacuation flights suspended in Kabul, U.S. officials tell Fox News

All U.S. evacuation flights have been suspended at Kabul international airport, Fox News has confirmed.

A U.S. official says the runway is “not secure” after hundreds of Afghans “breached” the airport walls and flooded the runway.

Until the runway is cleared of Afghans desperate to escape following the Taliban’s swift takeover of the country, all U.S. military and charter flights are suspended, the official said.

Disturbing scenes at Kabul’s airport

A video is widely circulating on social media Monday morning purportedly showing Afghans clinging onto the side of an American C-17 aircraft leaving Kabul airport in a desperate attempt to flee the Taliban.

Dozens of men could be seen jogging alongside the plane as it was taxiing in preparation  for takeoff.

Biden's On Vacation, Now Jen Psaki's On Vacation Too

Pathetic.

The disaster in Afghanistan is bad enough, Biden's cowardice is really despicable. When you've screwed up this badly, at least address the American people. Instead, Biden's hiding out at Camp David and promising a speech in a few days. Kamala Harris isn't taking questions and Jen Psaki decided to go on vacation after the media spent weeks touting how incredibly tough she is.

The level of irresponsibility here is really something.

Screwing up is bad. Running for the hills and waiting for it to blow over is completely unacceptable behavior from the gang with the top job in the land. A job they desperately wanted and assured the people that they were uniquely qualified to take on.

Not only weren't they up to the job, they weren't even up to doing the news shows.

While Psaki is in hiding, the only administration member seemingly willing to face the fire is Secretary of State Blinken. And while Blinken's performance, on and off the camera, was disgraceful, at least he wasn't hiding out. That's more than can be said for Psaki whose job is answering tough questions, but instead decided to outsource the job.

EXCLUSIVE: Hollywood Crew Members Reject Vaccine Mandates, Plan To Rebel Against Biden-Connected Union Leadership

 https://nationalfile.com/exclusive-hollywood-crew-members-reject-vaccine-mandates-plan-to-rebel-against-biden-connected-union-leadership/

'Hollywood may lose a bunch of its workers'

Hollywood crew members are planning to rebel against leadership of the IATSE (International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees) if the union leaders do not stand against all vaccine mandates, according to a letter circulated to union members that has been obtained by NATIONAL FILE. The anti-forced vaccine crew members are planning to hold up contract negotiations and to vote against current IATSE leadership in all future elections if the leaders promote the “atrocity” of vaccine mandates. Current IATSE president Matthew Loeb recently wrote a letter to Joe Biden volunteering the union and its members to work with the Biden White House in building field “vaccinations sites.” IATSE recently made a short-term agreement allowing Hollywood studios to mandate the Coronavirus injection on studio sets. The union represents more than 140,000 professionals in the entertainment industry.

Our source tells us: “There is an anonymous letter circulated amongst Hollywood IATSE crews via text message. Seems Hollywood union crew members are fed up with their leadership and are now organizing AGAINST their own unions. They are angry about the mandates. Hollywood may lose a bunch of its workers.”

An urgent message to all the 13 IATSE West Coast Locals currently negotiating our new union contract.

Local 44 - Local 80 - Local 600 - Local 695 - Local 700 - Local 705 - Local 706 - Local 728 - Local 729 - Local 800 - Local 871 - Local 884 - Local 892

August 2021,

Dear Representatives,

We feel compelled to write about recent concerns we have. Both on our behalf and for all of our co-workers. We hope the points presented can be taken with an open mind and as a warning for dangerous future legal risks our union might be accepting.

To that end, the following two items are REQUIRED to earn a yes vote from ALL of us.

⁃	Complete rejection of any and all vaccine mandates
⁃	Complete rejection of any and all vaccine status inquiries by employer
(note: this specifically includes Complete rejection of any visible marking of crew members with colored stickers or similar - incredibly violating)

Omission of either from any new contract will require us to immediately vote NO for any new contract. We have no choice in this. For us, this is non-negotiable, there is no possible compromise, and this is essentially a “one issue” contract. Forcing people to give up freedom over their own bodies is unacceptable and goes against every value this country, and all of humanity, cherishes and protects.

If a contract is presented without these two essential provisions, we will also be voting against all current leadership in every future election if they promote this atrocity. To us, that would be an inexcusable betrayal of the responsibility of representation, something that could not forgotten or forgiven.

It is already unconscionable that in the recent RTW update our unions agreed to allow production companies to mandate an Experimental Gene Therapy as a condition of employment. According to widespread international adoption of the Nuremberg Code decades ago, this is officially classified as a “Crime Against Humanity”.

Does IATSE really want to open itself up legally to liability for future lawsuits? The risk of this is real and would bankrupt the union along with all of our pension accounts. We are worried that the union is already at liability risk with the recent RTW agreement and suggest it be retracted immediately with all references to vaccine mandates removed.

You may have heard the argument that we are free to choose another job, so it is not really a “mandate”. That is inaccurate in the eyes of the law, which clearly states any groups, not just governments, mandating OR coercing participation in Medical Experiments are equally culpable and guilty of crimes. Manufacturers have been granted immunity from liability decades ago. That protection does not extend to employers or unions. If a member is coerced into participating in Medical Experiments to keep their job and suffers a debilitating injury, or death, the employers and the unions collaborating in this coercion are BOTH liable and could be sued.

Another glaring source of future liability is any representative verbally or in writing claiming that these Experimental shots are “safe”. Members are being told by their business managers to just get the shot because it is “safe” and "not a big deal”.

The safety has NOT YET been determined, these Medical Experiments are UNAPPROVED by the FDA. They are currently only AUTHORIZED FOR USE under an “Emergency Use Authorization”. That is NOT equivalent to being APPROVED for “safe” use.

The safety is still being vigorously debated on a global stage. As of 7/30/2021 (8 months of Covid shots) there have been 12,366 DEATHS associated with these Covid Experimental Gene Therapy shots reported to the national Vaccine Adverse Events Reporting System (VAERS). To put this into perspective, that number is 50% more than ALL OTHER vaccine related reported deaths COMBINED (8,858) since the beginning of the VAERS database 30 YEARS AGO. In only 8 months.

Union representatives should STOP using the word "safe" to coerce the members you represent into participating in a Medical Experiment. This is not a grey area legally. It is a crime to try and convince someone that any of these Medical Experiments are “safe”. It is still conceivable that in the future we find out these shots don't work. On Friday, August 6th, CDC Director Dr. Rochelle Walensky stunned many viewers of CNN with the following shocker: "Our vaccines are working exceptionally well. They continue to work well for Delta in regard to severe illness and death being prevented. BUT WHAT THEY CAN’T DO ANYMORE IS PREVENT TRANSMISSION." So, why then are we mandating shots that don't prevent covid from spreading. What is the point of that? This new development suggests that these shots aren't as protective as previously thought. We could still eventually find out that they are dangerous. You need only research the risk of “Pathogenic Priming” or “Antibody Dependent Enhancement” that medical professionals and clinical experts have been warning us for almost a year might present with this type of Experimental Gene Therapy. Union representatives using terminology now such as “safe” open the union up to legal liability in the future.

Safety debates aside, we are not asking that as a union we collectively decide about the potential dangers and/or efficacy of the vaccine…that may never be agreed upon, even by some of the smartest minds in Medicine. We are only asking you to seriously consider the fact that at the end of the day there are certain inalienable rights that simply must never be violated, no matter what you believe. Even those of us who have gotten one of these shots agree that what we put into our body (especially things that can’t be removed, ever) and the decision on whether or not to participate in any medical treatment must remain a PRIVATE and PERSONAL decision between a patient and their doctor. Mandating such participation is unacceptable. There is a large constituency of members that completely rejects this coercion and will vehemently vote against it. We would have seen this already if the recent RTW agreement was put up for a vote.

Consider this precedent being set: We draw up papers with a lawyer demanding information on the status of all other employees' health conditions in regards to other forms of communicable diseases. Demanding information on employees with AIDS, hepatitis, flu, STDs measles, mumps, and so on, then force the employers to make immediate policies to section off employees who have any illness that can be spread, including the common cold, and maybe wear a colored sticker that indicates which illness they have. If an employer is going to take responsibility in stopping the spread of covid-19, they will then be liable for the spread of anything else. Is this the future you want for our industry? It is an absurdity. What possible madness is next in this fear driven mania? Those of you casually conceding to these demands may not like the future consequences. Don't let fear drive us to bad decisions for some unrealized promised safety.

"They who can give up essential liberty to obtain a little temporary safety, deserve neither."

We are prepared and resolute in our commitment to fully walk away from this industry if it goes down this dark path. We could not in good conscience support a union or an industry promoting these human rights abuses. We love this business; we feel we are a part of something that actually does change the world (some of us for decades). However, we can't contribute to an industry if it is promoting crimes against humanity. These policies being pushed are immoral, and considering the influence Hollywood exerts over most of the world, these policies are a threat to all of humanity. We refuse to be a part of that. With the global stage we occupy, what we should be doing is setting an ethical example and be united to reject human rights abuses.

We believe the IA does have its members best interests at heart. Lately, we have seen some horrible decisions that can only be attributed to woeful misinformation and likely terrible advice. We are writing with the intent of saving our union because we all love it and love our careers in this industry. With the recently updated RTW agreement (un-voted on by the membership), IATSE is showing it is being irresponsible with its members physical safety and financial security. We are sincerely hoping now you find the courage to correct this mistake. Please REACH OUT and talk to members about this issue. That is something that hasn't been happening enough lately. We think you will find a vast majority completely reject a policy that forces or coerces Medical Experiments and treatments on members as a condition of employment. There are a lot of us that believe this. Please keep us all working. Don’t jeopardize the ratification of a hard-earned contract with one bad decision. Stand up for what is right, just, and ethical, and the members will rally and align with you. Please do the right thing, and don't force us to walk away from an amazing industry.

Thank you for your time.

In Solidarity,

Fully vaccinated Southwest flight attendant dies from COVID-19

 https://www.yahoo.com/news/fully-vaccinated-southwest-flight-attendant-185211392.html

A 36-year-old flight attendant who worked for Southwest Airlines has died from COVID-19.

Maurice Reginald "Reggie" Shepperson of Las Vegas tested positive for the novel coronavirus in July and he battled the respiratory illness for a month, according to USA Today.

His mother, Dawn Shepperson, and close colleague and friend, Marcia Hildreth, told the American newspaper he died from complications with COVID-19 on Tuesday, Aug. 10, despite being fully vaccinated.

Southwest Airlines confirmed Shepperson passed away in an email sent to Fox News.

"We are heartbroken over the loss; the Southwest Family is supporting each other, and our Employee’s family, during this difficult time," the airline’s statement said. "Out of respect for Reggie's family, we do not have additional details to share."

Shepperson had a close relationship with his mother and the pair briefly took a trip to Hawaii in June, weeks before he tested positive, according to one of his last Facebook posts.

Prior to falling ill, he also expressed frustration with the long waits he was seeing in doctor’s offices in Nevada. Based on his observation, Shepperson wrote that scheduling an appointment with a doctor in the Silver State could mean a three- to four-month wait.

Shepperson’s mother and Hildreth did not immediately respond to Fox News’ request for comment.

"It hurt me so bad because it was just so quick," his mother told USA Today. "I didn't have time to really even acknowledge what is going on."

She went on to note that he took precautions throughout the pandemic, including regular mask wear, cleaning surfaces and washing his hands.

Hildreth told USA Today that she’s going to miss her friend. She has gone on to create a GoFundMe to help the Shepperson family cover the cost of funeral arrangements.

"Reggie was a flight attendant for Southwest Airlines and he loved his job! His personality, wit and humor were just a few characteristics that everyone adored," Hildreth captioned the fundraising campaign. "He was one of the kindest most giving people I’ve ever known. If you needed him, he’d be there with no questions asked. Now he needs you to help make his transition a bit easier on his mom, Dawn, whom he loved dearly."

Infections that occur after vaccination are called "breakthrough infections," according to scientists.

The World Health Organization (WHO) uploaded a podcast episode on Friday addressing frequently asked questions about COVID-19 breakthrough infections.

"The vaccines that we have against COVID are incredibly effective vaccines. And people have seen the results from the clinical trials of, you know, anywhere in the 80% range, 90% range of efficacy," said Dr. Katherine O’Brien, a professor at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. "But that doesn't mean that 100% of people, 100% of the time are going to be protected against disease. There is no vaccine that provides that level of protection for any disease."

She went on to say that although breakthrough infections are "uncommon," scientists are "seeing more cases of breakthrough disease, in part because people are stopping the other interventions that reduce the transmission of this virus."

"When the virus starts to transmit at a greater and greater pace and with greater frequency, there's a lot more exposure that everybody has, including people who are vaccinated," O’Brien added.

The WHO recommends all people to avoid crowds, continue social distancing and keeping windows open whenever possible.

An Indiana doctor's COVID-19 comments went viral. They were also full of misinformation.

 https://www.yahoo.com/news/indiana-doctors-covid-comments-went-212131119.html

INDIANAPOLIS – Dr. Dan Stock looked and sounded the part. He was well-dressed, well-spoken, credentialed and explained complicated medical terms with ease, so even the layperson could understand what he was saying.

There was only one problem: What he was saying was largely false, contrary to the opinions of the medical establishment, and potentially dangerous.

A video clip of Stock addressing the Mount Vernon Community Schools board, pushing back against the usefulness of masks and extolling the dangers of vaccination in response to COVID-19 has gone viral, captivating droves of Americans, skeptical and weary from a pandemic with seemingly no end in sight who have hailed the central Indiana-based doctor as a hero.

But doctors across the state and beyond are responding to the video with a varying degrees of exasperation and anger.

“It’s frustration and there’s a spectrum to that,” said Bree Simmons, a family medicine doctor in Kokomo. She saw the video make the rounds through several physician Facebook groups. While some were livid and others brushed it off, everyone was on the same page about the content.

“We desperately wish we could put a stop to this misinformation,” she said.

Stock said he is a functional medicine doctor, a kind of medicine that looks for the root causes of disease and illness. A CV posted to his LinkedIn page says that he graduated from the Indiana University School of Medicine in 1988 and while he previously worked in several hospital-based health care settings, he says he is now a private practice family medicine physician.

An archived version of his website shows a pre-occupation with vitamins and other alternative treatments for everything from cancer to autism.

While he has an Indiana medical license, he doesn’t appear to be board-certified, a higher level of medical credential, in family medicine, internal medicine or any other specialty.

Stock did not return IndyStar's request for comment.

'Patently false'

Stock claims that the vaccines are causing the current surge in COVID-19 cases. Medical experts and public health officials agree that the surge is being caused by the more contagious delta variant of the disease and low vaccination rates.

"My jaw kind of hit the floor," said Dr. Gabriel Bosslet, associate professor of clinical medicine in the IU school of medicine. "He looked really credible and he sounded really credible. He used language that sounded intelligent. ... It's just the substance of what he was saying was honestly just patently false, especially the stuff about the vaccine.”

While “breakthrough” cases have been reported in vaccinated individuals, the data shows that more than 96% of current infections in Indiana are in the unvaccinated, as are nearly all recent hospitalizations and deaths.

Bosslet, who posts regular updates of Indiana's COVID-19 status, responded in a Facebook post Tuesday morning that went through Stock's testimony, point by point.

"The concern that I had was exactly what happened," he said, "that it would be shared widely."

In his post, Bosslet says that there are some nuggets of truth in what Stock says. The data on the effectiveness of masks is largely observational up to this point, he said. It suggests that they are helpful, although probably not as much as we would like.

And, Bosslet said, many people do think that some version of the virus will continue to circulate. What he gets wrong, though, is the science around the vaccine’s impact. The vaccine is preventing people from getting severely ill, from dying and it’s working well, Bosslet said. It’s the only way forward.

“I can see why a video like this is popular,” he said. “This physician is well-spoken and clearly had a command of the audience that was impressive. The performance was really well done. But when you drill down to the substance that was said, this is the same tired, fringe stuff that we have heard for the last year.”

One video of Stock's six-minute speech was taken down earlier this week from YouTube for "violating YouTube's community guidelines" after it had received more than half a million views. The video of the full school board meeting, posted to the district's official YouTube page, has more than 550,000 views. Most of its meetings receive just a few hundred.

COVID-19 protocols up to school boards

The problem isn't just with the internet audience he has captivated. Stock has taken his message to at least two local school board meetings, urging board members to resist adopting stricter COVID-19 safety protocols. Last month, the Greenfield Daily Reporter quoted Stock delivering a similar message to the Greenfield-Central Schools board.

But these boards are typically elected officials without a medical background which can make it difficult, Bosslet said, for them to discern why one doctor's opinion differs from others.

“I feel bad for the school board in that video,” he said. “The guy sounds completely credible. He is not.”

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has recommended that K-12 schools adopt universal masking for all students, teachers and staff members, regardless of vaccination status. The Indiana State Department of Health has recommended that schools follow the CDC guidance.

But the decision has been left to local school boards, the very people that Stock is telling not to listen to the CDC or the state health officials.

State health officials have pushed back on Stock’s video, while maintaining the position that Indiana is a "home rule state" and decisions around masking and more are up to local officials.

“Throughout this pandemic, we have relied on data and science to make recommendations, and we will continue to do so,” said Megan Wade-Taxter, a spokesperson for the Indiana State Department of Health. “The COVID-19 vaccines are highly effective at preventing hospitalizations and deaths, as evidenced by the fact that more than 98% of Hoosiers who have been hospitalized with COVID-19 since mid-January are unvaccinated."

That’s true even as the delta variant drives a surge of new cases. More than 97% of Hoosiers who have been hospitalized with COVID-19 since June 1 have not been vaccinated, she said.

"Decisions about school protocols rest with school boards and local leaders," she said, "including local health departments and elected officials."

The Hancock County Health Department has also advised all schools in the county, including Mount Vernon, to follow the CDC and state health recommendations.

"You’ve got so many things coming at you," said Kellie Freeman, a member of the Mount Vernon Community Schools board that heard from Stock last week. "It’s difficult to know."

At that meeting of the Mount Vernon board, members were considering parameters that would require individual school buildings to increase cleaning and move toward a mask mandate, based on the percentage of students out because of illness or quarantine. Currently, the district is mask-optional.

Ultimately, the board decided to table the discussion after hearing Stock's comments.

"I think we have an obligation to … find the facts that were shared today," said board member Shannon Walls.

A spokesperson for Mount Vernon Schools said the board wanted time to be thorough and review all the additional information it has received.

“We know students need in-person learning for them to achieve their highest level of academic success, and Mount Vernon is doing everything we can to maintain continuous learning in a safe environment for our students and staff,” said spokesperson Maria Bond. “Our goal is for all students to succeed in school while preparing them for a successful future.”

Boards across the state were already trying to balance the desires of parents, who remain split on issues such as mask-wearing in many communities. Superintendent Jack Parker said that he’s heard from parents who want a universal mask mandate in the buildings, as well as the parents at the board meeting who called for no masks, contact tracing or quarantines.

The board is set to revisit the updated plan at its next meeting later this month.

Biden Regime Says Anti-Maskers, Lockdown Resisters, And Trump Supporters Are Huge Terrorist Threat

https://nationalfile.com/biden-regime-says-anti-maskers-lockdown-resisters-and-trump-supporters-are-huge-terrorist-threat/

Lockdown resisting Republicans are more dangerous than radical Islam, says the Biden administration as it watches Afghanistan be overrun by the Taliban

In new guidance released this week, Department of Homeland Security Alejandro Mayorkas says that opponents of COVID-19 restrictions including lockdowns and vaccine mandates, and supporters of President Donald Trump who believe the 2020 election was stolen constitute major terror threats.

A photo went viral on Twitter this week, claiming to show that the Department of Homeland Security considers “Opposition to COVID measures” and “Claims of election fraud” to be two of the country’s largest terrorist threats currently faced by the Biden regime. Many expressed skepticism, suggesting the photo was manipulated, due to the seemingly ridiculous notion that lockdown resisters are more dangerous than Islamic terrorists or the Taliban, even as the militant group conquers and occupies the majority of Afghanistan as American troops leave after a 20-year occupation.

However, the image appears to be real, and the topics included in the image were discussed on MSNBC, the low-rated cable news network. (READ MORE: Army National Guard Recruits For ‘Internment’ And ‘Resettlement’ Specialist, Military Documents Lay Out Procedure For ‘Civilian Internees’)

The DHS claims that the United States is in a “heightened threat landscape,” and according to MSNBC, “Homeland Security says there’s several concerning factors. There’s continuing grievances over COVID restrictions, which has stirred up a lot of opposition,” and “there’s the coming 20th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks,” and “And there are approaching religious holidays and the opening of school and the possibility of school shootings.”

A former member of the Trump administration’s Department of Homeland Security also recently claimed that Republicans should be considered a terrorist threat.

Miles Taylor, the former official, claimed that President Donald Trump disregarded the DHS’s claims that Republicans constitute terrorism threats, however, he also directly compared Republicans to radical Islamic extremists. “a very prominent, former U.S. commander who said there are elements of the GOP that are starting to look like the jihadists that he used to fight in Afghanistan and Iraq, spreading lies and conspiracy theories to radicalize a population,” said Taylor, who emphasized that concerns about election integrity and the 2020 election are akin to beheadings and Sharia Law.

“And I worry similarly about the continuing radicalization of the electorate,” Taylor continued. “If you go back and look in time, and I say this as a counterterrorism guy, terrorism movements don’t start immediately with violence. They usually start with a political grievance that leaders say cannot be solved through peaceful means. Then they move to violence. After Trump started to promulgate the big lie, a lot of us said what he’s doing is actually tilling the fertile soil for extremists to pop up later on.”
