US opposes Canada's digital services tax proposal
"As Canada is fully aware, the United States has serious concerns about measures that single out American firms for taxation while effectively excluding national firms engaged in similar lines of business," USTR said.
It called for Ottawa to "focus efforts on engaging constructively" with the OECD negotiations, "instead of pursuing a counterproductive unilateral measure that risks encouraging other countries to follow suit."
Should Canada go ahead with the tax, "USTR would examine all options, including under our trade agreements and domestic statutes."
Washington has hit out at digital services tax proposals globally, which it says impose discriminatory fees on American tech giants like Amazon, Apple and Google.
In response to USTR, the office of Canadian Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland said Canada's preference has always been a multilateral pact.
"Canada has a clear national interest in this multilateral agreement, which protects against erosion of the tax base and will generate additional revenue" for the country, her office said, in an emailed response to AFP.
"We sincerely hope that the timely implementation of the new international system" will make Ottawa's proposed tax "unnecessary" to ensure the protection of Canadian interests, it added.
In October, nearly 140 countries reached an agreement on a 15 percent minimum tax under OECD auspices, leading the United States to remove punitive tariffs on several countries ahead of the global tax's imposition, which is expected in 2023.
Those levies were never imposed, but served as a threat to those countries which go ahead with their digital services tax.
Canada's proposed three percent tax "on revenue from certain digital services" would affect companies with at least $850 million in gross revenues and apply retroactively to the start of this year, though it would not come into effect until 2024, USTR said.
Health & Wellness: Why do people keep dying after having sex?
Why do people keep dying after having sex?
Many people die after having sex. This is why.
In most cases, people who have had a cardiac event are afraid to go back to having sex for fear that sexual activity will put pressure on their heart and endanger them. New research shows that their fear may be justified, but they’re not the only ones at risk.
Sex has excellent physical and psychological effects, including reducing high blood pressure, improving the immune system and helping you sleep better and of course, reducing stress. Much of this occurs following the release of the hormone oxytocin, called the love hormone.
But sex can also have a less pleasant side. People sometimes die during or shortly after sex. The incidence is, thankfully, extremely low and accounts for 0.6% of all sudden deaths.
There are many reasons why this happens. In most cases, such death is caused by physical overload caused by sexual activity, or the use of certain prescription drugs, and, yes, also by the use of illegal drugs like cocaine.
The risk of sudden cardiac death is higher as people get older, but recently, researchers from St. George's University of London have found that this phenomenon is not limited to middle-aged men. The study, published in JAMA Cardiology, examined sudden cardiac death in 6,847 cases referred to the St. George's Center for Cardiac Pathology between January 1994 and August 2020.

Of these, 17 (0.2%) occurred during or within one hour of sexual activity. The average age of death was 38, and 35% of cases occurred in women, a higher figure than in previous studies.
These deaths were not usually caused by heart attacks, as seen in older men.
In half of the cases (53%), the heart was found to be structurally normal and a sudden arrhythmia was the cause of death.
Dissection of the aorta was the second largest cause (12%). This is a life-threatening condition in which there is a rupture in the innermost layer of the aortic wall. The remaining cases were due to anatomical abnormalities such as cardiomyopathy, a disease of the heart muscle that makes it difficult for the heart to pump blood to the rest of the body, or a rare group of genetic conditions.
Younger adults diagnosed with these conditions should seek advice from their cardiologist regarding the risk involved in sexual activity. However, the low incidence of death in these studies indicates a very low risk, even in people with pre-existing heart disease.

This was the horrifying moment a woman rammed the car of a mother-of-two, who had her daughter with her, before running over her victim and dragging her across the parking lot.
The victim, who only gave her name as Amaro, said she was 'terrified' during the attack which happened with two young kids, aged three and five, in her car.
Amaro told Kron4 that the incident began when she accidentally cut off the aggressive motorist as she merged into the lane to go to a Bay Area McDonald's drive-thru on February 5, at around noon.
Cellphone footage recorded by the victim, shows the unidentified suspect, who appeared to be wearing medical scrubs, getting out of her car and screaming at the victim before she begins to throw things.
Amaro quickly rolls up her window as the crazed woman repeatedly throws a water bottle at her.
Her terrified children can be heard crying and asking why they were being attacked in the chilling video.
'They were so scared,' she said. 'I was terrified, for my children, for myself.'

Richmond Police are searching for a driver (left and right) who slammed her car into another vehicle after she accused a woman of cutting in front of her in the McDonald’s drive-thru line in Richmond, California

After yelling profane language and throwing items at the victim's car window, the woman rammed her Honda Civic into the other driver's van (pictured)
The suspect, who police said was accompanied by an older male passenger, then gets back inside her vehicle to charge into the victim's van with her car.
Amaro, who stopped recording on her phone after the crash, got out of her van to stand in front of the suspect's vehicle to prevent her from fleeing. However, the woman took off, running over Amara in the process.

Amaro was able to hold on to the hood of the suspect's car for more than 150 feet before the woman hard-braked, causing Amaro to fall off.
'As I was trying to get up and get my balance back on my feet, she got out of her vehicle and started punching me multiple times,' said Amaro. 'I counted six times in my face, but it could have been more.'

After the suspect rammed her car, Amaro (pictured) stood in front of the woman's vehicle so that she wouldn't flee the scene. But, the woman ran her over and Amaro had to hang onto the suspect's car roof. She was dragged for more than 150 feet before eventually falling off and received several punches while she was laying injured on the ground

'They were so scared,' Amaro said of her two kids who witnessed the incident. 'I was terrified, for my children, for myself.'

The road-rage incident took place in the parking lot of the McDonalds on MacDonald Avenue in Richmond, California
After the incident, police later revealed that the suspect was not the owner of the Honda Civic used in the assault. The car was eventually found by authorities, who said its owner was not cooperating with the investigation.
Police have now asked for the public's help to identify the suspect, who faces several serious charges.
'We are investigating this as an assault with a deadly weapon because her vehicle was used specifically as a weapon to ram the other vehicle,' Sergeant Pomeroy told KTVU.
Amaro has recovered from her injuries from the incident. However, she fears for her safety as well as the ones of her children, who have been having nightmares over the incident.
'Just the thought of me running into her again is terrifying,' she said.
Richmond Police said they urge anyone with information on the assault to contact its hotline immediately.
