Links between Muslim Terrorism and Maduro

After Maduro’s capture, Rubio links Venezuela mission to fight against Iran, Hezbollah

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said the United States will exert leverage to ensure that the country “no longer cozy up to Hezbollah and Iran in our own hemisphere.”

In the wake of the US operation that brought Venezuelan leader Nicolás Maduro to the United States to face charges, Secretary of State Marco Rubio said the mission is also about ending Iran and Hezbollah activity inside Venezuela.

Rubio made the remarks on US television a day after elite US forces carried out a pre-dawn raid in Caracas that resulted in Maduro’s capture and his transfer to federal custody in New York. President Donald Trump and Rubio have framed the mission as aimed at dismantling narco-trafficking networks and foreign influence tied to Caracas.

Speaking on CBS’s “Face the Nation,” Rubio said the United States will exert leverage, including continued sanctions and pressure on Venezuela’s oil sector, to ensure that the country “no longer cozy up to Hezbollah and Iran in our own hemisphere.”

On NBC’s “Meet the Press,” he offered a shorthand for US goals: “No more drug trafficking, no more Iran Hezbollah presence there, and no more using the oil industry to enrich all our adversaries around the world.”

Rubio also dismissed comparisons between the Venezuela operation and US military interventions in the Middle East, saying Venezuela’s Western Hemisphere context is different.

“The whole foreign policy apparatus thinks everything is Libya, everything is Iraq, everything is Afghanistan,” Rubio told CBS. “This is not the Middle East. And our mission here is very different. This is the Western Hemisphere.”

Israel uses Venezuela as signal to Iran

The Venezuela operation drew attention in Israel, where leaders used it to signal a warning to Tehran amid mounting unrest inside Iran. Opposition leader Yair Lapid wrote on X that “the regime in Iran should pay close attention to what is happening in Venezuela,” framing the US action as a broader message to a government facing intensifying protests and riots at home.

Diaspora Affairs Minister Amichai Chikli said the capture of Maduro struck a blow to what he called the “global axis of evil” and sent a “clear message” to Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei about the consequences of supporting narcoterrorism and militant proxies such as Hezbollah, according to the Jerusalem Post.

“Maduro did not run a country; he ran a crime and drug empire that directly fueled Hezbollah and Iran,” Chikli said. “The president’s decisive steps have proven once again that strong leaders are the only way to defeat dictators.”

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, fearing a preemptive attack by Tehran, reportedly assured Russian President Vladimir Putin on Monday that Israel does not intend to attack Iran right now. At the same time, Trump posed with a “Make Iran Great Again” hat in Washington.

Rubio’s comments underscore a broader US security concern about Tehran’s relationships in the Americas, especially its ties to Caracas. Venezuela and Iran built close diplomatic and economic ties during the presidencies of Maduro and his predecessor, Hugo Chavez.

The relationship deepened in the mid-2000s, when Chávez cast Venezuela as part of what he called an “axis of unity” with Iran and other US adversaries. In June 2022, Iran and Venezuela signed a 20-year cooperation pact meant to shore up their alliance and blunt US sanctions, expanding collaboration on energy, technology, and security. The deal included Iranian assistance for Venezuela’s oil sector in exchange for economic access, along with stepped-up military cooperation, including drones.

US officials believe that those ties have also created space for Hezbollah, Iran’s Lebanese proxy, to raise money and build logistical networks in Venezuela and neighboring countries. Over the years, Washington has sanctioned Venezuelan officials and businessmen accused of helping Hezbollah operatives obtain passports, move cash, and participate in smuggling schemes, allegations the Maduro government has denied.

Hezbollah has been active in South America in the past. It is believed to have orchestrated two major attacks on Jewish targets in Buenos Aires in the 1980s that together killed hundreds of people. The current president of Argentina, Javier Milei, supports Israel and has taken steps to hold Hezbollah accountable for those attacks.

The connection between Venezuela's drugs and terror - and how it affects us

Jerusalem Center for Public Affairs President Dr. Dan Diker warns that Venezuela has become a central hub for Iranian-backed terror, drug trafficking, and Hezbollah operations across Latin America.

Dr. Dan Diker, the President of the Jerusalem Center for Security and Foreign Affairs, spoke with Arutz Sheva-Israel National News about Venezuela's contribution to global terror, as he completes a comprehensive article on this matter that should be troubling the entire world.

"The world paid attention to Venezuela's significant involvement in global terrorism and global drug trafficking, and now, it is all coming out," Dr. Diker says. "Hugo Chavez and Maduro were responsible for billions in terror funding from Iran. They represent the Iranian regime. Senior Iranian officials don't need a visa to enter Venezuela and receive Venezuelan citizenship immediately and automatically," he adds and states that Venezuela is not only an extension of Iran in South America, but it serves as a transit point for terror to the entire Latin America.

Diker mentions the Hezbollah Israeli Embassy and AMIA bombings of 1992 and 1994 in Argentina. "Venezuela inherited and advanced this terrorism through Hugo Chavez and later through Maduro. They continue to support Iranian terrorism through Hezbollah and Iran's other satellites. They finance terrorism on the Brazil-Argentina-Paraguay border triangle. Venezuela is the agent for transporting terrorism from there and from the north, since Venezuela is the northernmost country in South America."

"They are responsible for the billions in terror funding and the transfer of terror elements. President Trump understood this. It isn't just a matter of drug trafficking, but also a terror machine at the US's back door, and Trump wants to send a clear message to the Iranian regime, and I think he was successful in that."

Dr. Diker also addressed claims by some in the West that Trump's decision was driven by economic considerations and a desire to take control of Venezuela's oil, which would not justify such actions against the leader of a sovereign state. "I heard such criticism over the past few days. There is a war here between the axis of evil and Venezuela, Russia, China, and Iran, which are taking control of the economic axis of evil through oil. What is preferable, that they control it, or that the United States, Saudi Arabia, and the Emiratis, who represent a stabilizing force in the global energy landscape, control it? That is the choice."

Diker also mentions that "in 1983, President Reagan raided Granada and captured Cuban military agents, in 86', the Americans attacked Libya, and, in 89', they captured Manuel Noriega, the dictator of Panama, for the same things, trafficking drugs and supporting terror, and he sat in an American prison for 17 years. So why are they criticizing Trump, who is doing the same thing as his two predecessors? It is subjective criticism like that against Netanyahu."

Diker claimed that Barack Obama and Joe Biden's policies led to the growth of global terror and its spread from Syria and Lebanon to Africa. "Obama gave a billion dollars in cash to the Ayatollah in Iran. How did that help us?" he wonders.

Dr. Diker insists that there is a direct connection to Venezuela. Hezbollah is a leading drug trafficker and runs drug, cigarette, vehicle, and oil businesses in Venezuela. "There is a full partnership between the two. The United States must do good public diplomacy to explain it to the American people. People are unaware of the danger that Venezuela poses to the US."

"A percentage of oil that Venezuela exports to China, and here they are hurting that ability. America wants to take 80.5 trillion dollars out of the ground in Venezuela, which is proud to be part of the Axis of Evil," says Diker, and adds the impact of the American operation in Venezuela on the protesters in Tehran who are encouraged by it in their fight against the Ayatollahs in Iran.

It was Cubans who guarded him. 32 of Maduro's Cuban Security Force Guards were killed during Maduro’s capture.

Taiwan Launches Massive Sea Drone Project

Taiwan launches massive unmanned sea drone program

Taiwan is investing nearly $40 billion to build 1,600 unmanned attack vessels

Sea Drone: An Autonomous Unmanned Surface Vessel

Taiwan has announced plans to produce 1,600 unmanned attack surface vessels (USV) to strengthen the country’s defenses in the Taiwan Strait.

A report by Taiwan’s Liberty News said that both the navy and the army have submitted requirements for the USVs –  with the navy’s baseline calling for a top speed of at least 64 km. per hour and a range of at least 460 km.

The USVs should also be capable of autonomously identifying and navigating other vessels, possess swarm warfare capabilities, be equipped with optical/infrared modules, and be able to transmit intelligence and imagery up to 44 km.

The USVs should also be able to operate in Sea State 4 on the Beaufort scale, which means moderate seas with wave heights up to 2.5 meters.

According to a report in Taiwan News, the program will be funded by a special defense budget of 1.25 trillion New Taiwan dollars (approximately $39.8 billion).

Sea Drone on Display in Taipei

The National Chung-Shan Institute of Science and Technology is expected to be the prime contractor on the project. NCSIST has prior experience building USVs and has signed a cooperation agreement with the American USV company MARTAC.

MARTAC’s platforms have been deployed by the 59th Task Force of the US Navy’s Fifth Fleet, as well as in 20 countries around the world.

Lethal sea drones

With three-quarters of the Earth's surface covered by ocean, the sea has long been central to global trade, security, and power projection. Recent conflicts in Ukraine and in the Red Sea have accelerated the adoption of unmanned maritime systems because for many countries, the sea is the primary trade route. Any disruption can significantly increase costs and impact both national and global energy security.

The lethal effectiveness of USVs has been demonstrated in the Black Sea, where – since late 2022 – Ukraine has deployed remote-controlled speed boats packed with explosives to sink Russian frigates and minesweepers.

The Houthi rebels in Yemen have employed similar vessels against commercial shipping in the Red Sea.

These tactics have caught the attention of the Pentagon, which is incorporating lessons from Ukraine and the Red Sea into its plans to counter China's rising naval power in the Pacific.

Chinese expansion

The announcement of the USV program came as China carried out large-scale military drills encircling Taiwan, to simulate a blockade on the island nation.

The exercises, named Justice Mission 2025, saw China fire dozens of rockets toward Taiwan and deploy a large number of warships and aircraft near the island, in a show of force that drew concern from allies in the region and the West.

Taiwan's defense ministry said that 77 Chinese military aircraft and 25 navy and coast guard vessels had been operating around the island. Among them, 35 military planes crossed the Taiwan Strait median line that separates the two sides.

Taiwan condemned the drills as a threat to regional security and a blatant provocation.

Taiwan President Lai Ching-te said that the island was determined to defend its sovereignty and boost defense in the face of China's rising ambition for expansion.

Last year, Taiwan announced a special budget of $40 billion between 2026 and 2033 to procure advanced weaponry, including building an air defense system – the Taiwan Dome – based on Israel’s Iron Dome.

Two weeks ago, Washington announced a record $11.1 billion arms package that includes HIMARS rocket systems, anti-tank missiles, and loitering suicide drones.

“Facing China’s serious military ambitions, Taiwan has no time to wait,” the Taiwanese president said.

Somaliland History and Strategy

Berbera is on the coast northeast of Hargeisa

Berbera: A bastion too far?

If we want any chance of keeping the Turks and their Somali allies away from Berbera, we have to ensure that there is a mobile, heavily armed Somaliland force. And more.

Israel’s recent recognition of Somaliland’s independence has been hailed by many Israeli commentators as a stroke of geopolitical genius. Certainly, at first glance, it would be hard to argue with this assessment. Finally, after sustaining a rain of Houthi rocket and drone attacks, Israel has gained access to both port and airfield facilities in Berbera, which, it is hoped, will give us the ability to put increased pressure on the Houthis.

Situated just outside the Bab el Mandeb, Berbera’s strategically placed airfield, which the UAE has recently improved with hardened aircraft shelters, should allow Israeli fighter bombers to both refuel and rearm after striking Houthi targets. This should allow the IAF to basically double the amount of bombs it can drop on a round trip mission to and from Berbera. Perhaps more importantly, Israeli aircraft based in Berbera can be over San’a in a little under 20 minutes, giving the terrorist regime there very little time, if any, to activate its air defenses.

And while this all sounds fantastic, it’s important to appreciate the fact that there are some potential risks associated with our use of the Berbera airfield. We’ll lay these out in due course, but first, some historical context.

For centuries, the Red Sea was an overlooked backwater, controlled by the Ottoman Turks. However, two widely separated events catapulted the region into prominence. And these events still have relevance today.

During the 1530s-1560s, the Ottoman Navy was heavily involved in protecting the Red Sea from a Portuguese invasion. The Portuguese who, at the time, controlled a large percentage of Indian Ocean trade, wanted to dominate the extremely lucrative spice routes, which were as valuable then as are the oil routes today. The Ottomans resisted and war ensued. Although Portuguese fleets sailing out of ports in Western India managed to block the Straits of Hormuz, they failed to capture Aden, the seizure of which they’d hoped would allow them to seal the Red Sea. The Portuguese objective was fairly straight forward: blockade both the Persian Gulf and Red Sea, forcing spice laden ships to take the longer Cape route, which they controlled.

While their failure at Aden was a major defeat, a Portuguese fleet did, however, succeed in taking the island of Socotra, where the UAE now has an airfield and military base. After the Portuguese tried to capture Jedda, the Ottomans finally decided to build a massive fleet at Suez and, allied with various Somali states, managed to defeat the Portuguese. Not surprisingly, Erdogan feels that because of the Ottoman Navy’s defeat of a Christian power in the 16th century, Turkey has some proprietary rights over the Horn of Africa. We’d do well to keep this in mind because Erdogan has a nasty habit of trying to reestablish the Ottoman Empire in the unlikeliest of places.

Next, in 1869, with the opening of the Suez Canal, various European powers began to seize territory along the Red Sea due to its new geopolical importance. Coaling stations were established by them, as well as naval anchorages and shore facilities for colonial garrisons.

Being understandably concerned about safeguarding its new, shorter route to India, the British seized Somaliland and Aden. The French subsequently established themselves in Djibouti, while the Italians carved colonies out of Eritrea and Somalia.

This arrangement remained unchanged, until 1936, when the Italians conquered Ethiopia. At this point the British understood that their position in Somaliland was untenable, trapped as it was between the Italians in Ethiopia and Somalia.

When World War Two erupted, Britain’s worst fears were realized. Striking out of Ethiopia in August 1940, Italian forces quickly defeated outnumbered British troops at the battle of Tug Argan, ultimately forcing them to evacuate Berbera for Aden. Although the sight of this mini Dunkirk was embarrassing, the Italian victory was short lived. By March 1940, the British launched Operation Appearance, which succeeded in driving the Italians out of Somaliland.

Eventually, British Somaliland and Italian Somaliland United on July 1, 1960, forming the Somali Republic. This union, however, began to dissolve rather quickly due to the central government’s corruption, the brutal reign of General Siad Barre, an independence driven Somaliland insugency, and clan fighting that tore the country to pieces. In the end, Somaliland seceded and declared its independence on May 18, 1991. Although Somaliland was never recognized as an independent country until Israel recently did so, it was, nevertheless, able to establish a stable democracy based on government transparency, accountability and adherence to the rule of law. Its success was a rarity on a continent known for its corruption, brutality and mayhem.

Apart from the unresolved issue of Somaliland secession, there is a territorial dispute between Somaliland and Somalia, which may be the cause of a future war between the two countries. This involves a claim by Somaliland that part of its eastern territory was illegally seized by Somalia. This boiled over into open warfare in 2008 and resulted in the temporary occupation of Laasqory by Somaliland forces. Although Somaliland has not indicated a desire to reinvade the disputed area, it represents a potential flashpoint that Somalia could “reheat", so to speak, at any moment. The Somali objective being to destabilize the frontier with Somaliland to the point where Hargeisa would feel compelled to launch a cross border counter terror operation. At that point, general hostilities would ensue.

Turning now to more recent events, Israel’s seemingly sudden decision to recognize Somaliland independence was actually the culmination of a long planned effort by Israel and the UAE to militarize the latter’s deep economic involvement with the country. Starting with the UAE’s takeover of Berbera’s main commercial port by DP World, the UAE later built a spur linking Berbera to Ethiopia’s rail line to the port of Djibouti which, now that the Egyptians are pressuring Djibouti to cut Ethiopia’s access to their port, will provide the Ethiopians will an alternative, and presumably safer, access to the sea.

This access, it should be noted, may require Ethiopian recognition of Somaliland’s independence. Without a doubt, it would be a very good thing for both countries were this to occur. Ethiopia would finally gain a reliable partner in the region while Somaliland would secure an alliance with a neighbor that could provide them with a significant amount of military assistance, if needed. The UAE is apparently promoting this unfolding relationship as best it can.

At the same time that this commercial activity was occurring, the UAE was also converting Berbera’s old Soviet built airfield to a full blown modern military facility, complete with 12 massive hardened underground bunkers capable of sheltering fighter bombers and a dedicated naval berth where fuel and munitions could be offloaded. It now appears that the berth can also accommodate Israel’s SAAR 6 class covettes.

When this military facility was completed, it was turned over to Israel, which promptly recognized Somaliland independence.

The bunkers at Berbera can reportedly survive missile attack, which is fortunate since the Houthis have just recently announced that they intend to target the facility when their war with Israel is renewed. Assuming this would happen, unconfirmed reports state that Israel has deployed both Iron Dome and David’s Sling missile defense batteries to defend their Berbera facility. Even if this turns out to be true, David’s Sling interceptors aren’t capable of destroying incoming Toufan ballistic missiles from Yemen. The Toufan, a Houthi variant of the Iranian Shahab, is outside the engagement envelope of David’s Sling interceptors and can only be stopped by our Arrow system. So far, there’s been no word about that system being deployed to Berbera. The absence of an Arrow battery might also present a problem in the event the Iranians decide to target Berbera with their longer range missiles.

As for the Iron Dome battery reportedly at Berbera, it should be able to take out Houthi drones and cruise missiles in the likely event they’re used against Berbera. However, Israel’s Iron Beam laser might be an appropriate “last ditch" system to deploy, as well, given the fact that it only requires electricity to operate. This would obviously eliminate the system’s need for interceptors, which are expensive and can be depleted rather quickly in a full scale war.

As for offensive systems, Berbera should be able to support a squadron CD of fighter bombers. If equipped with ER LORA air launched ballistic missiles, our planes should be able to hit Houthi controlled territory minutes after reaching launch altitude. Unfortunately, the ground launched ER LORA only has a maximum range of 430 km, which is just shy of Sana’a, which is 554 km from Berbera. Of course, if small container ships were available at Berbera’s naval port, they could be modified to carry scores of encapsulated ER LORAS. Guarded by a SAAR 6, these arsenal ships could reach a launch position within a relatively short period of time.

Ideally, though, a 600 km+ range ground launched ER LORA should be developed and deployed to Berbera. Assuming a large number of them were stationed in Berbera, we could hit the Houthis round the clock without having to rely exclusively on our fighter bombers.

We should also mention that unconfirmed reports claim that Israeli Hermes 900 and Heron TP reconnaissance drones have been deployed to our Berbera base. These long duration drones would provide the base with round the clock coverage of both the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden, allowing either our fighter bombers, ground launched ER LORAS, or smaller missile boats to target Iranian arms carriers en route to the Houthis. Since both drones are capable of carrying air-to-ground missiles, they could also be used to target merchant arms carriers.

Two threats we should be aware of are the possibility that the runway at Berbera will be hit with cluster munitions and the base itself could be targeted with chemical/biological weapons. The Houthis have missiles capable of being armed with such warheads, as do the Iranians. In the event the runway is disabled by cluster bombs, the Berbera base will have to have a repair element capable of fixing the runway as fast as possible. (This is yet another reason why I like the idea of long range ground launched ER LORAS that don’t require a runway.

As far as defending against chemical or biological weapons is concerned, assuming the bunkers have efficient air filtration systems, it would be possible to remotely operate the base’s air defenses. And if the bunkers have double doors equipped with water wash down systems, our fighter bombers could continue to operate, although at a slower sortie rate.

Ultimately, though, any use of unconventional munitions against the base will have to result in massive retaliation by the Israeli government, that may include nuclear weapons.

While the Americans have yet to recognize Somaliland’s independence, this may be in the offing given their apparent interest in using Berbera as a replacement for their base in Djibouti.

In November of last year, the commander of AFRICOM, General Dagvin Anderson, paid a highly unusual visit to Berbera.

While there, General Anderson held talks with his Somaliland counterparts concerning the need to strengthen collaboration against terrorist groups like ISIS and al-Shabab. Interestingly, General Anderson’s visit to Somaliland occurred without the Americans having first asked permission from the Somali government in Mogadishu. That calculated diplomatic oversight certainly seems like a de facto recognition of Somaliland’s independence.

Regardless, the Pentagon’s apparent interest in Berbera is not hard to understand. Camp Lemonier, their base in Djibouti, is uncomfortably close to a Chinese facility, which has been suspected of conducting intelligence collection operations against their American neighbors. If AFRICOM would relocate to Berbera it wouldn’t have to worry about this type of espionage threat. Moreover, the US Special Forces units assigned to AFRICOM would have a lot more room to train in privacy.

At the moment, there are so many foreign military bases crammed into Djibouti that everybody seems to be tripping over one another.

However, whether AFRICOM’s ability to redeploy to Berbera would be conditioned on America’s official recognition of Somaliland’s independence is not known. It would certainly make sense not only given the fact that Somaliland is a sister democracy but, also, in light of Somaliland’s interest in joining the Abraham Accords. Then again, an American presence in Berbera might also help us deter the base’s other major threat- Turkey.

Most people are not aware of the fact that the Turks basically own Somalia. They operate their largest overseas military training base in Mogadishu, which is slated for a major expansion. Turkey negotiated an exclusive license from Somalia to search for offshore oil and gas deposits and is in the process of establishing a space launch facility in Somalia.

More troubling, shortly after Israel recognized Somaliland, the Turks announced that they intend to open a military base in Laasqoray, which is located in the area that Somaliland claims. In addition, the Turks may also be building a naval base in Lassqoray under the terms of the Defense and Economic Cooperation Agreement they signed in 2024 with Somalia.

Lastly, an unconfirmed report from late December 2025 suggested that the Turkish base in Laasqoray might eventually host a multinational “battalion sized peace force" composed of Egyptian, Pakistani and Saudi elements. Again, let me repeat that this has yet to be confirmed. If it does materialize, though, it would further complicate our defense of Berbera. Let me explain.

In the event a war breaks out between Somaliland and Somalia, which is not that far fetched, a Turkish expeditionary force operating from Lassqoray could very well try to seize Berbera. Given the fact that our base does not appear to have a large garrison or even any landward defenses, it’s possible that the Turks could overrun Berbera in a lightning strike. The Turks could also support their offensive with both ground-to-ground rockets launched from Lassqoray as well as a Koral system that could be used to jam our air defenses. Turkish forces operating out of Sudan might even try to interfere with our efforts to fly in reinforcements to our Berbera base by threatening to target our air transports with SAM batteries they’d deployed ostensibly to defend Port Sudan.

This is why I really think it’s crucial that the Americans succeed in transferring AFRICOM to Berbera. I’d also like to see them stand up a training command there, where they could organize and equip a special mechanized Somaliland force capable of defending their border with Puntland. The UAE might even agree to fund this training mission, which would make it palatable for the Trump Administration.

However, in the event the Americans decline to establish this training mission, we and the UAE are going to have to do it. If we want any chance of keeping the Turks and their Somali allies away from Berbera, we have to ensure that a mobile, heavily armed Somaliland force is guarding the frontier with Puntland. We could assist them with attack drones, rocket artillery and air support, if necessary. At all costs, though, we must do whatever is necessary not to have to evacuate Berbera under fire as the British did in 1940. Because in our case, we probably won’t be coming back. But there may be another way of addressing this problem.

One not so crazy idea involves asking the Indians to help us out with training a large Somaliland frontier force. Due to the involvement of the Turks in the Horn of Africa, New Delhi might be inclined both to recognize Somaliland’s independence and to establish a training base in Berbera. They might even be willing to station a few warships in the commercial port- for “anti piracy" purposes. Of course, the fact that these same Indian warships would be able to bottle up the Chinese garrison in Djibouti in the event of Sino-Indian hostilities may just make the case for Indian recognition of Somaliland independence.

As you can see from our discussion, Israel’s decision to establish a base in Berbera is not so simple. Granted, if the Turks stay out of our way, we could probably afford to maintain a minimal presence there, while making life very difficult for the Houthis should they decide to reopen hostilities with us. However, if the Turks decide to establish a large force in Laasqoray and threaten to unleash their Somali allies against Somaliland, we, with Emerati financial support, will have to deploy a drone and rocket force to stop them.

Luckily for us, the terrain in Eastern Somaliland is mostly flat desert. Perfect ground to hammer an invading force with attack drones and multiple launch rocket artillery.

Needless to say, if the Indians decide to help us out, it would make the defense of Berbera all the easier.

How Commie Spies Tricked Labour MP into giving a KGB crafted speech against Thatcher

Labour MP was used by Communist spies to 'give a KGB propaganda speech' to 'discredit' Margaret Thatcher's fight against the Soviet's nuclear threat

A Labour MP was used by Communist spies to give a KGB propaganda speech to ‘discredit’ Margaret Thatcher's government and damage its defence policies.

Frank Cook, a shadow minister and later member of the Defence Select Committee, spoke at a Scottish CND event in 1987 to spread Russian disinformation branding Britain as a secret warmonger at a crucial time in nuclear disarmament talks, according to declassified Cold War archive files unearthed by the Mail.

Delighted Red spymasters hailed the operation a success after the MP later boasted he had given a ‘very sharp speech’ based on the lines fed to him by their agents and shared the falsehoods with delegates from major Western powers who he said happily accepted them.

The Mail can reveal that Cook was one many leading figures involved in the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament who helped or provided information to spies from the feared Czechoslovak StB agency who were using diplomatic cover to operate in the UK during the height of the Cold War.

Four serving and future CND General Secretaries – including one of its most recent leaders - were targeted in operations during the 1980s that helped the communist agents glean information about missile movements, arms exports and ‘confidential’ reports about chemical weapons, according to files in the Czech state Security Service archives.

Communist spies even plotted to use ‘peace activists’ as part of a propaganda campaign to provoke nationwide anti-Thatcher protests by comparing her to Hitler.

It came at a time when CND had over 100,000 members and was a powerful left-wing force in British politics, exerting influence on the Labour party and regularly holding huge marches to demand unilateral nuclear disarmament and call for the UK to leave Nato.

Its activists also played a key role in the Greenham Common Women’s Peace Camp that protested against US cruise missiles being held at the Berkshire RAF base.

The Czech spies had wooed MP Cook for two years and listed him as an official ‘contact’ who had provided ‘good results’ when in June 1987 they proposed using him in an ‘active measure’ as part of a long-term propaganda operation to undermine Nato.

The MP’s handler, agent Lt. Vlastimil Hnizdil, wrote to his spymasters back in Prague: ‘The aim is to discredit and damage the Conservative Party and British government in respect of their disarmament and defence policies.’

Cook would be used to promote a line ‘requested by the USSR intelligence agency’ that Mrs Thatcher was cynically publicly claiming to support the ongoing nuclear disarmament talks between the US and Soviet Union while actually planning a major upgrading of the UK’s nuclear capability and US military basis in Britain.

The MP would be asked to cite alleged evidence of this secret plan and argue they amounted ‘clear proof that that Britain is not interested in disarmament, which was a mere pre-election ploy, but rather in gaining military supremacy (with the USA) over the USSR and the Warsaw Pact.’

At a meeting the following month to ‘activate’ the operation, Cook was said to be ‘spontaneously positive’ when asked to push the Communist backed propaganda to ‘discredit the Conservative government's two-faced politics.’

‘[Cook] interrupted me saying he would do that for sure and it is altogether in line with his inner beliefs.’

He said he would be attending the CND's Scottish branch's Congress as one of the ‘main speakers’ and ‘would use our ideas in his speech.’

He also promised to promote the lines to representatives from delegates attending a conference running in the Shetland Islands to discuss nuclear energy which was supported by many CND members, the files say.

Lt Hnizdil later reported that Cook had told him: ‘He delivered "a very sharp speech" (in his own words) at the Scottish CND's Congress in which he used all of the arguments we had discussed at our meeting in June.’

He had also put forward arguments ‘supporting the USSR's and other socialist countries' peace policies and to discredit of the British government's intentions regarding nuclear weapons’ when talking to the other attendees and received ‘positive reactions.’

The following year the spies sent back articles published in ‘British peace periodicals in the second half of 1987’ showing ‘reaction’ to Cook’s propaganda. Spymasters in Prague officially rated the operation’s outcome as ‘effective.’

Cook, who died in 2012, remained a valuable contact of the spies and in 1988 introduced his handler to future Northern Ireland Secretary Mo Mowlam and later, in hushed tones during a lunch at a House of Commons, briefed him about plans by then Labour leader Neil Kinnock to abandon the party’s policy unilateral nuclear disarmament.

Professor Anthony Glees, a security and intelligence expert at the University of Buckingham, said: ‘These files are very important finds, providing hard evidence of the extent to which the KGB and its surrogates in the Czech secret service tried to manipulate the British political system.

‘We have long suspected that CND was the handmaiden of Soviet foreign policy and these documents indicate this.

‘The useful idiots of CND who jumped about saying they wanted peace were actually helping the Soviet’s interests.

‘It also shows the continuity between Soviet foreign policy and Putin’s foreign policy – hatred of Nato is in the Russian DNA because it stops its Western expansion.’

Red spies repeatedly targeted leading CND activists during Cold War

Red spies repeatedly targeted leading CND figures during the Cold War and were rewarded with information about missile movements, arms exports and chemical weapons, according to the Czech Security Service archives.

Agents using the cover of diplomats believed that those involved in a group which wanted the UK to unilaterally abandon its nuclear deterrent would be more sympathetic to communist causes and might provide information that could be used against the West.

Bruce Kent, then General Secretary of CND, held an October 1983 meeting with Lt Colonel Josef Houzvicka - codename  'Hradil' - the most senior Czech spy in London at the time.

The pair discussed a 'confidential' report into ‘American plans to resume chemical weapon production’, according to the agent’s secret cable sent back to Prague.

Kent also described CND’s fight to stop deployment of US Pershing II and cruise missiles in the UK – something the agent told his spymasters they should utilise as an ‘active measure’ as part of a long-term plot to undermine Nato.

Filles recounting an earlier meeting with another spy in October 1980 described how Kent ‘considers the USA and the USSR equally dangerous’.

In 1988, current CND vice president Kate Hudson, who was General Secretary from 2010 to 2024, met with a spy - although there is no suggestion that Ms Hudson knew he was a spy - who was using his diplomatic role as the Czechoslovak cultural attaché to cover his true identity.

At the time she was a member of the British Communist Party meaning – as per an agreement with Moscow – the Czechs were unable to recruit her, so the agent instead used her as ‘a cover contact and also to gain more useful information’, the files say.

She offered to put the agent in touch with leaders of ‘nationalist freedom movements’ from third world countries headquartered in London one of whom, an activist in the Chile Solidarity Campaign, gave the spy a detailed breakdown of the British export of weapons to Chile from 1980 – 8.

Rebecca Johnson, now a vice-president of CND, extended a ‘very warm welcome’ to an agent also posing as a Czech diplomat during a 1988 meeting and ‘shared a lot of information’ with him, the files say.

The spy’s report said: 'Among other things, Johnson offered to provide advanced information on American missiles leaving military bases, which she has access to up to 10 days in advance, as well as general situation at American bases.

‘She said she was happy to come to the Czechoslovak Consulate.'

Meg Beresford, then CND deputy chair and another future General Secretary, is listed briefly in the files as a 'cover contact' with ‘big ...opportunities mainly in relation to the peace movement’.

Another senior CND activist who went on to become its General Secretary offered to help spy on the organisation itself for the reds.

The files say on June 13, 1986 an agent met him when he was helping to organise a Czechoslovak Peace Council visit to the UK.

The agent reported the activist was 'happy’ to supply 'almost guaranteed' information about CND - both 'good and bad', where he has 'lots of friends'.

The agent requested he be given a 'personal number and a codename' and would be used as a 'registered contact' to 'fulfil a variety of one-off tasks of an informational nature’.

CND did not respond to requests for comment.

Communist spies planned propaganda campaign comparing Thatcher to Hitler

Communist spies plotted a propaganda campaign to provoke nationwide anti-Thatcher protests by comparing her military spending policies to Hitler’s.

In 1981, when Margaret Thatcher’s Conservative government was struggling with one million unemployed and soaring inflation, Czech spies deployed in the UK proposed an extraordinary plan to pounce on the unpopularity of its March budget.

The disinformation blueprint outlined in the files said the British public were ‘alarmed’ by the ‘drastic reduction of funding for school dinners and healthcare’ while the military had been allocated increased funding.

It stated: ‘The objective: to encourage the public's outrage against the government, to initiate demonstrations.’

The method involved circulating a pamphlet among trade unions and peace campaigners to highlight how extra cash for the armed forces was coming from cuts to health and social care and hikes in tobacco, alcohol and fuel duty. This would be contrasted with ‘peace proposals’ involving reducing nuclear weapons recently floated by the Soviet leadership.

It even suggested using headlines such as a notorious World War Two Nazi rearmament slogan, "canons instead of butter", which would ‘draw parallels between the Tory government and that of Hitler’, the files said.

The plan, which ultimately did not go ahead, suggested this would ‘prove that by accepting the Soviet peace proposals and spending part of the armed forces budget on the social sector, the standard of living of the British working classes would increase’.
