Paying Hamas to DIsarm

https://www.israelnationalnews.com/news/421862

     Hamas Weapons

I feel like I am having a nervous breakdown. It is quite possible, given the awesomely stupid ideas with which I must routinely contend. The latest one I have heard of, coming from the DC Mideast braintrust, is to pay Hamas to disarm.

Apparently, this elite team of A-grade minds think that if they give Hamas terrorists a fistful of shekels, jobs, or amnesty, they will lay down their weapons and become good little boys and girls who eat their vegetables and go to bed on time.

This is a retarded idea.

Hamas is a sociopath-filled, mass-murdering, raping, genocidal Islamist organization that wants to murder Jews, destroy Israel, and bring down the West.

But never mind that. It is all about vibes in the White House these days.

The Special Envoy to the Middle East assures us that Hamas will demilitarize and surrender their AK-47s “because they have no choice."

Oh really? If they have no choice, then why is there a need to pay them?

Meanwhile-back in reality-Hamas is vowing eternal armed resistance, praising massacre as theology, and insisting that their weapons are not negotiable and that no one had even spoken to them about it.

[Meanwhile - the IDF has revealed a Hamas document which shows that Hamas is acting actively to preserve its power and its civilian and military control under the planned "technocratic government". The IDF's assessment is that the terror organization will succeed in maintaining its grip on the territory if it is not disarmed].

Even the idea of hardened Hamas terrorists standing in line, signing a piece of paper, then voluntarily handing over rifles that symbolize power, control, and divine mission in exchange for a few shekels makes me feel like I am having a bad LSD trip and need to change dealers.

The part that really ignites my sympathetic nervous system is the idea of offering amnesty to members of a group that burned families alive, raped women next to their friends’ bodies, executed civilians point-blank, and kidnapped children and grandparents. The idea is obscene.

This harebrained proposal tells Hamas and future jihadists that if you murder enough people, terrorize enough civilians, and hold and torture enough hostages, the world will eventually show up with a sack of cash and ask what it can do to make you comfortable.

It is an incentive structure for barbarism.

Defenders of this insanity will insist that it is a pragmatic way to disarm Hamas. That argument is as pathetic as a wet paper bag, and I look down on those who hold it.

Hamas is an ideological death cult that defines itself by armed struggle and annihilationist hatred. Disarm Hamas and you have, by definition, destroyed Hamas-which is why Hamas will never voluntarily do it. Weapons are not incidental to Hamas’ identity; they are its theology forged in metal.

The idea that demilitarization can start with Hamas surrendering its heavy weapons, such as rockets, and then work its way down to smaller arms later is farcical. Hamas uses light weapons to suppress dissent and enforce obedience. So any plan that allows Hamas to retain small arms-while pretending they are being “decommissioned" because pieces of paper have been signed-is a recipe for permanent terror and Hamas remaining a political force in Gaza.

One thing that might tempt Hamas to surrender some of its weapons is jobs. Hamas is already promising thousands of its members-including police, security forces, and teachers-that they will have jobs under Gaza’s fantasized new "technocratic government". If so, that is tantamount to Hamas staying in power, which is madness on steroids. Hamas thugs will be the law and Hamas brainwashers will still be in the classroom.

I know you will not believe it, but this is not even the worst of it. That would be praising Hamas for “helping" recover the bodies of hostages it kidnapped and murdered.

The comment that “between Israel and Hamas working together, they got them back" had me retching into the nearest pail.

This is so awful that I lack the vocabulary to describe it adequately. It is like thanking a serial killer for showing police where he buried the missing bodies.

Hamas did not “help." Hamas committed the crime and knew where the bodies were because they put them there. Israel was forced to negotiate with Hamas because they held hostages. To describe such coercion as “working together" is to drain language of meaning and humans of dignity. Regarding this as cooperation speaks to a deep moral disorder.

Almost impossibly, there is an even deeper sickness at work here, beyond any single policy proposal. It is the pathological inability of Western leaders-who, even though they disagree on so much these days-to know the difference between right and wrong.

I do know the difference. For example, I know it is wrong of me to want terrible things to befall these people, but nevertheless I do.

Hamas terrorists are moral agents who choose evil and must be stopped, not managed, bribed, or therapized. This is pretty simple stuff to grasp.

Paying Hamas to disarm is not just a marginal error. It speaks to a worldview in which conflicts are symmetrical, violence is contextual, and all problems can be solved with enough money and a sufficiently euphemistic acronym. In this worldview, there are no enemies, only “stakeholders."

Hamas’ bigwigs are eating baklava in their Doha and Istanbul suites, laughing at the pathetic sight of world leaders who are addicted to the illusion-the lie-that a genuine peace deal exists. Hamas cannot believe these old tactics still work, but they surely do, presumably because Western universities have spent decades teaching people how not to think.

Hamas understands-far better than the clown-school dropouts proposing these schemes-that the West has lost confidence in its own moral judgment, and that this is the Islamists’ greatest strategic asset.

There is a clear alternative to this nonsense-defeating Hamas fully in war, which Israel would have achieved by now had the gutless Jew-hating international community allowed it. Hamas must be dismantled, disarmed by force, stripped of power, its leaders removed from the field of history, and its ideology discredited by failure. This is the minimum requirement of justice and deterrence.

The madness is not that Hamas refuses to disarm. That was always the case. It is the delusion that this refusal is no big deal and just a glitch in an otherwise masterful plan. In truth, it means there is no plan.

Beyond its obvious stupidity, paying Hamas to disarm would be corrosive in that it would eat away at the idea that evil should be confronted rather than coddled. It tells victims that their suffering is negotiable and perpetrators that their violence is a bargaining chip.

As for my nervous breakdown, I think it is fair enough. If this is what passes for leaderhip, then insanity may be the only sane response.

New Claim: Epstein was running Honeytrap Operation for KGB

Epstein's sex empire was a 'KGB honeytrap': The Paedophile financier had multiple talks with Putin after conviction - with Russian girls flown in, to harvest 'kompromat' on world-famous figures

Jeffrey Epstein was running 'the world's largest honeytrap operation' on behalf of the KGB when he procured women for his network of associates, intelligence sources believe.

The release of more than three million new documents relating to the late sex offender gives credence to incendiary claims made by senior security officials: that Epstein was working on behalf of Moscow when he facilitated assignations for some of the world's most powerful men.

The files include 1,056 documents naming Russian President Vladimir Putin and 9,629 referring to Moscow. Epstein even seems to have secured audiences with Putin after his 2008 conviction for procuring a child for prostitution.

The sources say it could explain why Epstein appeared to enjoy an ultra-wealthy lifestyle out of kilter with his career as a financier.

But the sources also claim that while US security services 'monitored' Epstein's Russian connections for years, their UK equivalents were hesitant due to Epstein's connection to Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor.

The cache includes an email claiming Bill Gates asked one of Epstein's advisers to provide medicine to treat sexually transmitted diseases due to 'sex with Russian girls'.

It also contains a document confirming The Mail on Sunday's October report that Epstein offered to introduce Andrew to a 'beautiful' 26-year-old Russian woman in August 2010 - two years after Epstein's conviction.

American intelligence experts believe Epstein was inducted into the world of espionage via business deals with Robert Maxwell, the disgraced media magnate who - like Epstein - died in murky circumstances; in Maxwell's case his body was found floating in the Atlantic in 1991, having apparently "fallen overboard from his yacht".

Epstein was found hanged in 2019, but relatives believe he was murdered to silence him.

Maxwell's daughter, Ghislaine, is serving a 20-year sentence for child sex trafficking and other offences linked to her association with Epstein, who she is said to have met shortly after her father's death.

Security sources say Robert Maxwell was a Russian asset from the 1970s, when he worked to extradite Soviet Jews to Israel.

In return, they say, Maxwell laundered Russian money into the West - with the help of Epstein.

They think the financier was introduced to Maxwell and the KGB by an oil tycoon also in the pay of Russian intelligence. Probes into Robert Maxwell's business dealings have uncovered links not only to the KGB - but also MI6.

US security officials also believe Epstein had long-standing ties with Russian organised crime, who could have been blackmailing him. That could explain the ease with which Epstein appeared to be able to fly in 'girls' from Russia.

A source said: 'You have Andrew, Bill Gates, Donald Trump, Bill Clinton and all the rest placed in compromising positions on an island bristling with technology. It's the world's largest honey trap operation.

'The Americans have been on this for years, but our lot have seemed more queasy about it, presumably because of the Royal link.'

In a startling email, sent to Epstein on September 11, 2011, an unidentified associate discusses an 'appointment with Putin' during a forthcoming trip to Russia. The individual tells Epstein: 'Spoke with Igor. He said last time you were in Palm Beach, you told him you had an appointment with Putin on Sept 16 and that he could go ahead and book his ticket to Russia to arrive a few days before you.'

Epstein appears to have had another meeting scheduled with Putin in 2014. In an email to Epstein, Japanese entrepreneur Joi Ito tells the paedophile that another US billionaire named Reid Hoffman, co-founder of website LinkedIn, was unable to join.

'Hey Jeffrey,' Ito writes. 'I wasn't able to convince Reid to change his schedule to go meet Putin with you.' It is unclear whether this meeting took place.

A subsequent email sent by Ito suggested it was cancelled after Russian-backed forces shot down a Malaysia Airlines passenger jet over Ukraine on July 17, 2014, killing 298 people.

Writing to Epstein three days later, Ito said: 'Bad idea now after the plane crash.' Meanwhile, in the 2010 exchange regarding the former Duke of York, Epstein told Andrew that he has a 'friend who I think you might enjoy having dinner with'.

When pressed by Andrew for more details, Epstein replied: 'She's 26, Russian, clever, beautiful, trustworthy and yes, she has your email.'

The MoS previously revealed how this woman, a blue-eyed blonde, was 'not only abused by Epstein but trafficked by him for many years', according to her legal representative.

And in another email sent in November 2010, Epstein asks an individual whether he needs a Russian visa, adding: 'I have a friend of Putin's, should I ask him?'

Other messages revealed Epstein claimed he could give the Kremlin valuable insight into Mr Trump ahead of a summit with Putin in Helsinki.

The financier messaged Thorbjorn Jagland, then secretary general of the Council of Europe, suggesting he could pass on a message to Putin about how to handle the US President.

In a June 2018 exchange, Epstein indicated that Vitaly Churkin, Russia's ambassador to the UN, 'understood Trump after our conversations'.

He advised that Mr Jagland, the former prime minister of Norway, could 'suggest to putin, that lavrov [Sergei Lavrov, Russia's veteran foreign minister], can get insight from talking to me.'

Epstein told Mr Jagland that Mr Trump 'must be seen to get something'. Mr Jagland responded that he would meet Mr Lavrov's assistant on the following Monday and relay the message.

Earlier that month Epstein had also messaged Steve Bannon, a Trump ally, to tell him Mr Jagland was due to meet Putin and Lavrov and was then staying overnight with him at his mansion in Paris.

The extraordinary exchanges took place before the totemic Helsinki summit between Mr Trump and Putin in July 2018, during which the US President insisted he did not think that Russia interfered in the 2016 Presidential election.

A report by FBI bosses said a source told the agency: 'Epstein was close to the former prime minister of Israel, Ehud Barak and trained as a spy under him.' In June 2013, Epstein sent an email to Mr Barak saying: 'Putin will re do his staff in the summer, bringing only very trusted people closer... more info on phone or face to face.'

The agency's unnamed source also highlighted how Epstein was linked to a former leader of Putin's youth organisation named Masha Drokova, a San Francisco-based businesswoman who was once an ardently pro-Putin teenager - and starred in a documentary that featured her kissing the autocrat.

The source concluded that Ms Drokova's company, Day One Ventures, was 'in Silicon Valley to steal technology'. It also details how the FBI spy discussed Epstein with Ms Drokova.

'CHS and Drokova spoke, but Drokova did not talk at all about technology; instead, she looked at CHS and said "You knew Epstein didn't you." She said Epstein was a "wonderful man" and that it was a crying shame what had being [sic] done to him.'

In 2021 a book by investigative reporter Craig Unger alleged that Epstein relied on Russian pimps to supply him with many of the girls he abused. Unger believes the FSB - the KGB's successor - may have acquired blackmail material from the many videos Epstein reportedly recorded of his famous friends with the girls.

In 2016, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu had seized on the reports of Barak’s connection to Epstein, taking to social media with the demand: “Investigate Ehud Barak immediately.”

At Epstein's place in New York

Former prime minister Ehud Barak  had said he would sue the UK’s Daily Mail newspaper for defamation after it published pictures of him entering Jeffrey Epstein’s New York residence in January 2016

“It is me in the picture,” he said.

Barak said he visited Epstein’s mansions and private Caribbean island, but insisted he never attended parties of a sexual nature there.

Barak told The Daily Beast that he met with Epstein dozens of times, including after reports emerged of sex parties and orgies at his homes, some involving minor girls.

“I can’t tell you exactly how many. I don’t keep count."

He confirmed that he had met Epstein at two of his Manhattan homes and on the small island owned by Epstein near the US Virgin Islands.

Barak told The Daily Beast that he first met Epstein about 23 years ago, when he was introduced by former president Shimon Peres. He said both Bill and Hillary Clinton were at the party.

Former CNN news anchor Don Lemon was arrested on Friday, according to a CBS report and a Reuters inquiry with officials from the US Department of Justice.

"At my direction, early this morning, federal agents arrested Don Lemon, Trahern Jeen Crews, Georgia Fort, and Jamael Lydell Lundy in connection with the coordinated attack on Cities Church in St. Paul, Minnesota," US Attorney-General Pam Bondi said in a statement.

Lemon's attorney, Abbe Lowell, said in a statement that the arrest represented an "unprecedented attack on the First Amendment."

"This unprecedented attack on the First Amendment and transparent attempt to distract attention from the many crises facing this administration will not stand. Don will fight these charges vigorously and thoroughly in court," he said.

"Don has been a journalist for 30 years, and his constitutionally protected work in Minneapolis was no different than what he has always done," Lowell added.

"The First Amendment exists to protect journalists whose role it is to shine light on the truth and hold those in power accountable. There is no more important time for people like Don to be doing this work," he concluded.

Lemon's link to Minnesota's church protests

Last week, a federal appellate court declined to order a lower court judge to sign an arrest warrant for Lemon, alongside four more people, for their role in an anti-ICE protest inside a church in St. Paul, Minnesota.

Multiple people have been arrested in the case related to the protest, where a crowd entered the St. Paul Cities Church after rumors arose of one of its pastors being an ICE official.

The main charges in the case, according to the Department of Justice, were that protesters unlawfully interfered with churchgoers' constitutionally protected freedom to practice religion.

New Book: Ninette's War (Living in Vichy France in WW2)

LONDON — On the morning of June 23, 1940, 12-year-old Ninette Dreyfus’s family learned that Hitler had forced France into a humiliating armistice the previous evening.

Her father’s reaction to the news was visceral and physical. Edgar Dreyfus collapsed on the stairs, suffering an asthma attack and struggling to breathe. “I had never seen him show weakness before. For a moment, I feared he was going to die,” Ninette later recalled. “The whole world of my childhood was falling apart.”

But unbeknownst to Ninette, her father, or France’s Jews, much worse was to come.

Released in paperback in the UK on January 22, “Ninette’s War: A Jewish Story of Survival in 1940s France” tells the remarkable wartime odyssey of one of France’s most prominent Jewish families — and the Vichy regime’s knowing complicity in the Nazis’ crimes.

The story has been painstakingly pieced together — like “restoring a mosaic” — by British journalist John Jay, drawing on Ninette’s youthful diary entries, family papers, and interviews she gave to the author in the years before her death in 2021.

As Jay makes clear, Edgar’s reaction to news of the armistice did not reflect a sense of foreboding about the likely fate awaiting his family.

“He was completely dumbfounded that the mighty French army could collapse in the way that it had done,” he tells The Times of Israel. “French Jews at that point had no idea of what subsequently was going to hit them.”

     Ninette in 1939

Jay’s book tracks Edgar’s growing sense of disbelief and horror at Vichy’s brutal betrayal of France’s Jews.

The Dreyfus family — second only in influence to the Rothschilds in Parisian Jewish society — were, Jay says, a “classic cosmopolitan, Jewish Western European family, a mixture of Bohemians, Germans and Frenchmen.”

They were also fiercely patriotic and loyal to the French state, which, by and large, had treated French Jewry well. Edgar ran a bank owned by the family firm, La Maison, which had provided loans to help France’s war effort after 1914. A decade later, Edgar acceded to the government’s request to help fight off an inflation-induced run on the franc. He was made an officer of the Légion d’honneur in recognition of his services.

In their grand 16th arrondissement townhouse — which had once been owned by composer Claude Debussy — Ninette, her elder sister Viviane and parents Edgar and Yvonne lived a life of plenty and privilege. The family were secular and, until the outbreak of war, Ninette barely knew what being a Jew was. Occasional antisemitic playground slurs had little meaning for her.

nd slurs had little meaning for her.

Life as an ‘exode’

Hitler’s May 1940 blitzkrieg against France changed all that. One month later, with the sound of artillery growing closer and German forces crossing the Seine, the Dreyfus family joined the “exode” — one of the largest movements of people in history — as 6 million people took to the roads to flee the Nazi advance, among them some 100,000 to 200,000 Jews.

After a three-week, 1,700-kilometer (roughly 1,050-mile) journey via Nantes, Bordeaux and Perpignan, Ninette and her family arrived in Marseille, where they took up residence in a hotel full of fellow exodians and Jews.

Already, the poisonous atmosphere caused by France’s defeat and humiliation had sparked a wave of antisemitism. Nonetheless, even as they traveled through Perpignan close to the Spanish border, Edgar, who had ties to the new Francoist regime, did not attempt to flee France.

The Riviera fell under the non-occupied “Free Zone,” which was governed from Vichy by the World War I hero Marshal Philippe Pétain. As Jay details, there was little to suggest Pétain — a onetime supporter of Alfred Dreyfus — harbored antisemitic inclinations. Indeed, alongside members of the International League Against Antisemitism, Edgar’s cousin, Louis, a senator, voted to grant Pétain authoritarian powers soon after the armistice.

But Pétain swiftly promoted antisemites to lead his new regime, creating a “permissive environment for antisemitism to flourish,” says Jay. In October 1940, the first antisemitic legislation barred Jews from certain professions, including teaching, journalism and the civil service, while sharply curtailing their role in the medical and legal professions. At Montgrand, Marseille’s grandest girls’ school, Ninette’s math teacher, Odette Valabrègue, was fired. Like the chief rabbi and French communal organizations, Edgar clung to the importance of the rule of law, even if the publication of now-infamous images of Pétain shaking hands with Hitler at Montoire in October 1940 led him to weep.

Petain shakes hands with Hitler, October 1940

Any lingering illusions about Pétain ended with the passage of further, sweeping antisemitic legislation in 1941, which, in a sharp break with the Third Republic’s avowed secularism, required Jews to register in a special census and expanded the list of professions, including banking, closed to them. The measures, which forced Edgar to relinquish his role as chief executive of La Maison, came as a “personal hammer blow,” writes Jay.

“Pétain’s first statute drove his friends from public service and the media and limited their participation in law and medicine, but he was not directly affected,” he says. “Now, Pétain was depriving him of his career and driving his family into a legal ghetto.”

Ninette later captured the psychological impact of the measures on her father, recalling: “Work was everything to Daddy, and it was torture for him to contemplate life without work.” Nor was the future much brighter for Edgar’s daughters, with university places and professional work all but closed to Jews.

The legal assault, the establishment of the new Commissariat Général aux Questions Juives, which began to plunder Jewish wealth, and the promotion of antisemitism in the media were accompanied by, and fed, rising Jew-hate on the streets. Ninette’s family heard the thud of the bomb that exploded in Marseille’s synagogue in May 1941.

Joining the resistance

No longer needing to be in Marseille, where La Maison had offices, Edgar moved his family to Cannes, which, although no less antisemitic, was filled with family and friends. Their new home, Villa Rochelongue, was a Belle-Époque seafront house near the Palm Beach Casino staffed with butlers and a cook, cleaner and gardener. Despite the war and food rationing — which led the family to keep a cow and rabbits — life “felt like the old Côte d’Azur,” says Jay. When not obsessing over her upcoming 15th birthday, Ninette penned diary entries about clothes, accessories and cosmetics, ballet, cinema trips, school and social life, sailing in the baie de Cannes, and her “passion” for football and volleyball.

Although somewhat cocooned by her parents, Ninette was not oblivious to the pernicious forces imperiling Vichy’s Jews. Her school headteacher, Marcelle Capron, was a résistante who later sheltered Jews and helped them flee. However, the school had its share of antisemitic teachers and pupils. Ninette, a self-described tomboy, fought girls who were members of Avant-Garde, the Pétainist youth movement.

Edgar, too, chose to resist, crossing what his daughter termed a “personal Rubicon” in spring 1943 by refusing to obey an order requiring all Jews to have the word “Juif” stamped in their ID and ration cards. While most French Jews followed their communal leaders’ advice to continue obeying Vichy’s laws, Edgar’s decision was, Ninette said, “the most significant moment of the war.”

“He was defining himself as an outlaw, no easy decision for a man in late middle age with teenage daughters and a position in society,” she said. Decades later, Ninette discovered files in France’s Archives Nationales revealing that he been denounced, triggering a police investigation. Six months late, Edgar led his family to the mairie to have their papers stamped.

Both Edgar — who joined a coastal reception committee for a Royal Navy boat carrying British agents and collecting résistants — and Vivian began to engage in secret resistance activities.

However, perhaps the most powerful example of the family’s resistance came in its evolving relationship to Judaism. As the atmosphere darkened, Yvonne recognized her daughters would be more resilient in the face of societal antisemitism if they felt pride in their heritage. She taught them that they should be both proud of Jews’ traditions and achievements, and recognize that with success came a responsibility to those in need. Those lessons bore fruit. Ninette remembered that her reaction to having her ID stamped with “Juif” was not one of humiliation, but pride.

“My parents became more interested in Judaism,” Ninette recalled. “Others ran away; we moved closer.” During Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur in 1942, Edgar and his wife and children attended services for the first time since participating in family bat mitzvahs in the 1930s. “For Mummy and Daddy,” Ninette believed, “taking part in a service after decades of non-observance was an act of defiance.”

However, back in Paris, which was occupied by the Germans, tragedy was enveloping members of the family — including Edgar’s sisters, Louise and Alice, Alice’s daughter, Maryse, and her husband, disabled veteran André Schoenfeld. André, a holder of the Croix de guerre and Légion d’honneur, was arrested in 1941 by French police at a reunion dinner for World War I wounded and sent to the notorious Drancy internment camp.

News of André’s arrest hit Edgar and his family hard. “Nothing would ever be the same again,” believed Vivianne; France was treating its Jews as “abject rot, putrid larvae to be crushed.” The family also learned of the horrors which had unfolded during the Val d’Hiv roundup in July 1942, when some 8,000 Jews, almost 4,000 of whom were children, were held together in the sports arena in appallingly overcrowded conditions for five days before being deported. “It is horrible, demonic, something that grabs you round the throat so you can’t cry out,” a letter from an eyewitness, a social worker, circulating on the Riviera revealed. “I’ll try to describe what it looks like, but if you multiply whatever you understand by 1,000, it will still be only part of the reality.”

But, even at this moment, elements of the family’s past life continued: That August, Edgar took his family on holiday to Mont-Revard’s Grand Hôtel, a luxury Alpine retreat they had visited before the war. In her diary, Ninette recorded she had “a fantastic time” riding horses and playing tennis, croquet, golf and ping-pong.

As Jay says, it is important to note that the family was “in ignorance of a lot of what was going on in the north and … didn’t know what was happening once the transports [took] people to the east.” As late as 1943, most exodians, he suggests, believed that forced labor was the worst fate awaiting French Jews. When two Auschwitz escapees, Haïm Salomon and M. Honig, returned to Nice looking for their families and detailed the horrors they had witnessed to a local Jewish committee, their testimony was dismissed. The men, it was decided, must have lost their minds, with one of Edgar’s prewar friends, who chaired the committee, telling a colleague: “Such atrocities… are not conceivable… in the middle of the 20th century.”

     Marseilles 1941

However, even as a series of Allied victories in 1942 pointed to defeat for the Nazis, it was clear that the danger had by no means passed. Indeed, for the family, the moment of maximum peril came in autumn 1943 when the Germans occupied the Riviera and, to prevent it from deserting the Axis, invaded Italy.

Going into hiding

Having acquired false identification papers forged by a former employee of La Maison, Edgar, his wife and daughters traveled by train from Cannes to Marseille and then onto Pau, close to the Pyrenees. “It was exciting to hold those false papers,” Ninette recalled. “I felt like a character in a book.”

Their escape highlights that, amid the betrayals and collaboration perpetrated by Vichy and its friends, there were also those who attempted to assist their fellow Jewish citizens. As the Germans searched for Edgar, the family’s neighbors in Cannes provided them with shelter.

In Pau, Pierre Barthe, a horse breeder who knew the family, hid them in his villa while hatching the audacious plan that would see them safely guided across the mountains to Spain by Henri Delhiart, one of the Pyrénées’ great smugglers. The escape was hardly without incident. Barthe purloined an ambulance and had Ninette pose as a tuberculosis patient to speed their passage to the French spa town Cambo-les-Bains, where Delhiart took the reins. He chose a bar frequented by German border guards as their rendezvous point, correctly calculating, as Jay writes, that “the one place Germans would not suspect as a starting point for an evasion would be their own watering hole.” And Ninette remembered later hiding in a ditch from Germans troops who passed so close that she felt as if their dogs were breathing on her. Luckily, as Delhiart had planned, the wet night ensured the dogs couldn’t pick up her scent.

After reaching the safety of Spain, the family spent the final months of the war lodging at Madrid’s luxurious Palace Hotel, socializing with Anglophile monarchists and dodging the attentions of German spies and fascist sympathizers.

In April 1945, nearly five years after her departure, Ninette returned to Paris. But the occupation had shattered the family forever. As they slowly discovered, André and Maryse were murdered at Auschwitz in August 1943. With her possessions and property expropriated by the Nazis, Aunt Louise died alone in her attic room in Paris in May 1943, while, alongside 327 children, Aunt Alice was deported to Auschwitz four weeks before the city’s liberation.

Later in life, Ninette worked to ensure that those who had helped the family were recognized. Thanks to her efforts, in 1980 Yad Vashem declared Barthe and his wife Righteous Among the Nations.

But she would never shake the feeling that French Jews had been betrayed by their own.

“Her disdain for her countrymen was even greater than her abhorrence of German Nazis,” Jay writes. “The Germans were foreigners; the French were her people, yet they had turned their backs on her and worse during the years in which she came of age.”
