Even her fellow Democrats criticize Rashida Tlaib for slandering Israel as an “apartheid state”

Even her fellow Democrats are piling on Rashida Tlaib for slandering Israel as an “apartheid state”

A number of House Democrats on Wednesday condemned comments made earlier by Rep. Rashida Tlaib (D-MI) in which she argued that support for “Israel’s apartheid government” is incompatible with “progressive values.”

JTA Tlaib, a Michigan Democrat who is Palestinian American, is the only member of Congress who opposes Israel’s self-definition as a Jewish state.
Ritchie Torres, (D-NY), who is gay and who has extolled the protection of LGBTQ rights in Israel, took aim at some of Tlaib’s other stances. “There’s nothing progressive about advocating for the end of Israel as a Jewish State,” he said on Twitter. “Nothing progressive about opposing the Abraham Accords, which promotes peace. Nothing progressive about opposing Iron Dome, which protects civilians from indiscriminate rocket fire.”

Is Israel an “apartheid state,” as its enemies claim? Who better to answer that charge than a Black South African who lived through apartheid? Kenneth Meshoe, a member of the South African parliament, examines the evidence against Israel and draws a compelling conclusion.

“The outrageous progressive litmus test on Israel by [Tlaib] is nothing short of antisemitic,” Wasserman Schultz said on Twitter. “Proud progressives do support Israel’s right to exist as a Jewish and democratic state. Suggesting otherwise is shameful and dangerous.”
Anti-Defamation League CEO Jonathan Greenblatt on Tuesday accused Tlaib of “doubl[ing] down on her antisemitism by slandering Israel as an apartheid state” and of “tell[ing] American Jews that they need to pass an anti-Zionist litmus test to participate in progressive spaces,” adding that the comments were “reprehensible.”
“There’s nothing progressive about advocating for the end of Israel as a Jewish State,” Rep. Ritchie Torres (D-NY) said.
Rep. Jerry Nadler (D-NY), the most senior Jewish lawmaker in the House said “I fundamentally reject the notion that one cannot support Israel’s right to exist as a Jewish and democratic state and be a progressive.”
Rep. Juan Vargas (D-CA) also condemned Tlaib for “advocating for the end of Israel as a Jewish and Democratic state.”
