ABC News airs purported Syrian war video — but it’s really from Kentucky

ABC News issued an apology after mistakenly airing purported footage of Turkish forces bombing the Kurds in Syria — video that appears to have originated from a Kentucky gun range.
The dramatic clip first aired on Sunday’s “World News Tonight” with the headline “Slaughter in Syria.”
“A border town bombarded by Turkey’s military,” anchor Tom Llamas says. “This video right here appearing to show Turkey’s military bombing Kurd civilians in a Syrian border town.”
The footage — which shows heavy gunfire amid a dark night sky — also appeared on “Good Morning America” the next day.
But an eagle-eyed sleuth pointed out on Twitter that the fiery scene appears to have been taken during a 2017 “night shoot” at the Knob Creek Gun Range in Kentucky.
The red-faced network issued a correction Monday on Twitter.
“CORRECTION: We’ve taken down video that aired on ‘World News Tonight’ Sunday and ‘Good Morning America’ this morning that appeared to be from the Syrian border immediately after questions were raised about its accuracy,” the post said. “ABC News regrets the error.”
An ABC source said the video was difficult to verify because the person who sent it described security concerns, as well as a sensitive position along the border.
