AL FRESCO FISH
What’s cooking today: Jam-basted fish on the braai
By Tony Jackman, the Galliova Food Champion of the Year 2021.
This is my interpretation of the way they like their fish on the West Coast, but instead of serving it with jam I used it in a baste.
Ingredients
1 whole firm-fleshed fish, butterflied (ask a fishmonger to do this)
250 ml apricot jam
50 ml brown vinegar
1 tsp cumin seeds
1 tsp fennel seeds
A handful of fresh fennel fronds, finely chopped
Salt to taste
Cooking oil for basting the fish and oiling the grid
Method
Toast the fennel and cumin seeds lightly and crush them.
In a small saucepan, mix together the apricot jam, vinegar and toasted seeds and heat while stirring until the jam has melted. Let it simmer for a few minutes to reduce and thicken. Remove from the heat and stir in the chopped fennel fronds. Let it cool to room temperature.
Salt both sides of the fish and oil the skin side well.
Brush the baste generously over the flesh side of the fish. Leave about half of it for basting again when it is cooked.
Oil the inside (what good would oiling the outside do?) of the grid very well, on both sides. Place the whole fish skin-side down on one side, and fold the other down and fasten it closed.
Braai skin-side down first, for 10 minutes. Turn and be watchful while the other side cooks, no more than 10 minutes, probably a little less. Brush the rest of the baste all over the flesh side. Don’t be reticent about eating it. It could get messy. DM/TGIFood

CRADLE OF HUMANKIND YIELDS ANOTHER MAJOR DISCOVERY IN EVOLUTION OF MANKIND
CRADLE OF HUMANKIND YIELDS ANOTHER MAJOR DISCOVERY IN EVOLUTION OF MANKIND
The partial skull of a Homo Naledi child, nicknamed 'Letti', was discovered at the Rising Star cave, the site of other major discoveries, back in September 2017. However, the information has only been made public now.
JOHANNESBURG - There has been another major discovery at the Cradle of Humankind. This time it's the partial skull of a Homo Naledi child nicknamed "Letti".
Professor Lee Berger of Wits University and a team of international researchers made the discovery at the Rising Star cave, the site of other major discoveries, back in September 2017.
However, the information has only been made public now.
The parts of the skull and teeth of the child are believed to belong to a four-year-old who died almost 250,000 years ago. The infant's full name is Letimela, which means "the lost one" in Setswana.
Berger said that this was a very important find.
"People should care about the story, things like little Letti and all the stories of human evolution because it's our story. It's no different than understanding who our parents were or grandparents were, because you'll understand that in understanding that, you'll understand what makes you what you are, your identity. As we explore, there's a deep shared human past. We are understanding our shared identity, why we are the way we are and who we are," Berger explained.
South Africa has been the center of human discovery since 1925 with major findings at the site in the northwest of Johannesburg.
Berger said such finds showed that there was much more to be revealed.

No Joke: Taliban Asks for International Aid to Help It Fight…Climate Change
No Joke: Taliban Asks for International Aid to Help It Fight…Climate Change
Playing leftist games.

Kyle Shideler, the Director/Senior Analyst for Homeland Security & Counterterrorism at the Center for Security Policy, said it best: “They may have a 7th-century law code, but they grift with the best of the 21st century.” The Taliban does indeed appear to have caught on to one of the most lucrative gravy trains of the first part of the 21st century and are eager to get in on the loot; the jihad terror group has issued a call for aid from international organizations to help it fight the scourge of climate change.
Showing a fine grasp of how the game is played, Taliban spokesman Suhail Shaheen explained: “Afghanistan has a fragile climate. There is need for tremendous work.” Accordingly, “some climate change projects which have already been approved and were funded by Green Climate Fund, UNDP, Afghan Aid, should fully resume work.”
Would environmentalists be safe working in Afghanistan? Why, sure! The Taliban, said Shaheen, would make sure of that: “The Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan is committed to providing security and a safe environment for the work of NGOs and charity organizations.”
Of course. This is the group, mind you, that abducted and murdered five aid workers from Save the Children in April 2015. In May 2019, Taliban jihadis murdered five aid workers from the American organization Counterpart International because, they said, Counterpart was promoting women being in the proximity of men in public. Then in June 2020, the UN accused the Taliban of “deliberate attacks” against health care workers.
But now, of course, we have the kinder, gentler Taliban, the one that told the international media that it would be more moderate than it was before and was actually believed. These new claims will likely be believed as well. After all, climate change is an existential crisis, no? Someone was telling Joe Biden that on Monday as he dozed off. The UK’s Daily Mail reported Sunday that “relief agencies have warned that a drought in Afghanistan, which UN scientists say has been worsened by climate change, could force 22 million into ‘acute food insecurity.’”
According to National Security Council spokesperson Emily Horne, “the U.S. assistance will be directed through independent organizations that provide support directly to more than 18.4 million vulnerable Afghans, including Afghan refugees in neighboring countries.” Horne explained: “Our partners provide lifesaving protection, shelter, livelihoods support, essential health care, winterization assistance, emergency food aid, water, sanitation, and hygiene services in response to the growing humanitarian needs exacerbated by health care shortages, drought, malnutrition, and the impending winter.”
Nor is that $144 million even close to all that we’re forking over for Afghanistan this year: “She noted that the additional funding brings the total U.S. humanitarian aid in Afghanistan and for Afghan refugees in the region to nearly $474 million in 2021, the largest amount of assistance from any nation.”
Sure. And how exactly will the U.S. ensure that Taliban jihadis don’t seize this aid? How will the U.S. hold the Taliban “accountable”? What will Biden’s handlers do if Taliban jihadis intercept the delivery of this assistance, or overpower those who do receive it and simply seize it all? This American money is going to the Taliban, and it would be naïve to assume otherwise.
But it isn’t enough. And so now the Taliban, knowing from twenty years of observing the Americans in Afghanistan how to tug on Western heartstrings and open Western checkbooks, is now pledging to fight climate change. It will almost certainly work. The capitals of North America and Western Europe are filled with fatuous philanthropists eager to bestow their largesse on the needy. And the Taliban knows just how to play this game.

Election a wake-up call for the woke: Devine
Election a wake-up call for the woke

By
It turns out that siccing the FBI onto Mama Bear and Papa Bear is not a vote winner.
Nor is indoctrinating their children in the fine arts of racial hatred, homosexual pornography, gender neutrality and anti-Americanism.
The right of parents to have a say in what their children are taught in school wasn’t everything driving the red wave that swamped Democrats on Tuesday, but their school board battles exemplified the anti-woke backlash sweeping the country.
And, looming over every ballot, was Joe Biden’s disastrous presidency. Soaring gas prices, inflation, supply-chain shortages, rising crime, out-of-control illegal migration and the botched withdrawal from Afghanistan are just a few of the self-inflicted debacles the president seems stubbornly determined to ignore.
So Tuesday became the “Brandon” election, as Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis dubbed it, referring to the new anthem of the disaffected: “Let’s go, Brandon.”
A polite substitute for the “F–k Joe Biden” chant rocking sports stadiums every weekend, the Brandon euphemism came about at a NASCAR race at the Talladega Superspeedway on Oct. 2. The crowd started chanting “F–k Joe Biden!” when winner Brandon Brown was being interviewed and the NBC reporter misheard or tried to conceal the profanity, telling Brown: “You can hear the chants from the crowd. Let’s go, Brandon!”
This caused much public mirth, and a new chant was born.
“Let’s go, Brandon!” is a gentle expression of derision for a vengeful, blundering president who won office on a promise of being a trustworthy moderate who would unify the country and then proved to be the opposite.

The slogan is everywhere, on billboards, on T-shirts and hats, and protest signs at Biden events. Rapper Bryson Gray topped the music charts with a “Let’s Go Brandon” ditty, beating even Adele.
Dems, who spent four years wishing death on Donald Trump, are enraged at the mockery and have tried to rebrand the Brandon slogan as white supremacy.
After a Southwest Airlines pilot supposedly said, “Let’s go, Brandon!” over the intercom during a flight last week, they campaigned to get him fired and he was branded a domestic terrorist akin to ISIS by an FBI agent-turned-CNN leftist.
Sliming Republicans as domestic terrorists and white supremacists is the new “Russia Russia Russia” excuse deployed by Dems after every setback.

So, of course, after Tuesday’s drubbing at the polls, all we heard on MSNBC and CNN was that mild-mannered Glenn Youngkin had won the governor’s race in Virginia because of racism.
“These Republicans are dangerous … to our national security,” ranted MSNBC’s Joy Reid, “because stoking that kind of soft white nationalism eventually leads to the hard-core stuff.”
Well, Virginia’s sensational new lieutenant governor, former Marine Winsome Sears, has news for Reid.
“I have been black all my life, but that’s not what this is about,” the mother of three and former small businesswoman said in a patriotic victory speech.

“We are framing too many issues in terms of race,” she told Fox News later. “It just continues to divide us and unfortunately politicians are using it … to advance their nefarious purposes … I’m destroying all the narratives about race. Look at me.”
Amen.
Finally, what the election results showed is that using Trump as a bogeyman doesn’t work anymore.
Stumping for Terry McAuliffe last week, Biden mentioned his predecessor an obsessive 24 times in one speech.
Trump Derangement Syndrome might have driven voters to the polls in 2020, but Youngkin was endorsed by Trump and remained respectful, albeit aloof, and still won over a blue state Biden had taken by 16 points.
Tuesday also showed that the patriotic populist movement centered around family wins elections for Republicans even without Trump on the ticket.

“Republicans are the party of parents, of education, of small businesses, of freedom, and family,” said New York Rep. Elise Stefanik.
Biden showed no self-reflection about the results and twice refused to accept any responsibility for the election results.
His presidency is on the skids and he seems to have no plan to recover. Just 37 percent of Americans say he is competent and effective as president, an NBC poll found last week. More than 70 percent believe the country is headed in the wrong direction, and that includes 70 percent of independents.
Even Democrats are displaying “Biden remorse.” A new NPR-PBS-Marist poll found that 44 percent of Democrats want someone else to be their nominee in 2024. The question is will Biden even make it that far.

Recipe: The Caker's lemon, olive oil and tarragon cake
Recipe: The Caker's lemon, olive oil and tarragon cake
Tarragon is underused in desserts, and it deserves to be in the spotlight for a moment.
This cake is beyond moist, and flavourful with three lemons. It takes a while to bake through, so may go a little dark around the edges.

Prep time: 20 minutes
Bake time: 45 minutes
Ready in time: 2 hours
Serves: 12
INGREDIENTS
4 free-range eggs
260g caster sugar
3 large lemons, zest and juice (reserve 1 tablespoon + 1 teaspoon for the glaze)
130g butter, melted and cooled
160g extra virgin olive oil
2 tablespoons finely chopped fresh tarragon
260g ground almonds
100g spelt or all-purpose white flour
65g fine polenta
1⅓ teaspoons baking powder
Pinch sea salt
The glaze
110g icing sugar
1 tablespoon + 1 teaspoon of fresh lemon juice
The decorations
Handful of fresh tarragon leaves
Fresh flowers, optional
METHOD
Preheat the oven to 170C and line a 9-inch cake tin with baking paper.
1. In the bowl of a stand mixer fitted with a whisk attachment, beat the eggs, sugar and lemon zest until pale and thick.
2. Slowly drizzle in the melted butter and olive oil to emulsify. Add the chopped tarragon.
3. Combine the ground almonds, flour, polenta, baking powder and salt in a bowl.
4. In two parts add the dry ingredients. Mix between each addition until just combined, being careful not to overmix.
5. Finally, fold through the lemon juice.
6. Pour the batter into a lined tin and bake for around 45 minutes, or until lightly golden, springy to the touch and a knife inserted comes out clean.
7. Allow to cool for 10 minutes in the tin before turning out onto a cooling rack.
8. Meanwhile, make the glaze by combining the icing sugar and the lemon juice in a small bowl.
9. Once the cake is completely cool, spread the glaze over it and decorate with a scattering of tarragon leaves and fresh flowers if using.
10. Serve at room temperature. Refrigerate in an airtight container for up to three days.
